The 33-year-old gunman is a former Marine who served for four years before being honorably discharged, the served three years in the Reserves.
He was deployed to Iraq in 2008 and Afghanistan in 2009-2010 and was a designated sharpshooter.

From another article:

According to his girlfriend of four years, whom he lived with in Brandon, Riley had PTSD and was occasionally depressed but never violent. She said he worked security at a church in Orlando a week ago and came home saying he could speak directly to God.

Tick...tick...tick...

#9 - he obviously isn't a responsible gun owner. Why would you think that? Responsible gun owners do not commit mass murder. The two are mutually exclusive.

"Guns rights were written into the constitution as a means of protecting liberalism from illiberalism." -- MadBomber

Well there you have it.

This brave patriot was protecting liberalism from an illiberal infant.

Maybe, in fifty years, Second Amendment supporters will adorn the public square with statues of menike this, who took up arms against illiberalism. Like they did to protest the illiberalism of trying to outlaw the racism which is innate to the human condition.

Good thing we give irresponsible gun owners and mass murderers the right to own guns.

Thanks, Second Amendment!

That's some level of Texas oblivious. I remember when I moved back to Texas years ago and a buddy explained to me that the one thing "bubbas" will not understand is sarcasm. Boy howdy was he right. Looks like we got one right'c here.

Every murderer is a 'responsible gun owner' until they actually use their guns for their intended purpose.

For 99.9% of his 33 years this guy was a poster boy for responsible gun ownership.

#16 | Posted by qcp at 2021-09-06 10:52 AM | Reply

This well trained US Marine veteran (with a small arsenal and a full body armored suit) checked all the boxes of responsible gun ownership.

As a former Marine myself I can assure you he received the finest weapons handling and safety instruction, and not just in boot camp either but every single year when he went to the range to qualify. He was taught well to respect weapons and what they could do and to handle and store them safely.

He worked as a body guard as well, ostensibly one who carried a firearm and if it were anywhere other than Florida you'd assume that too required some sort of license. Maybe it did.

This man's guns didn't end up in the hands of criminal thugs, he kept them safe at home. Maintained them, and kept them in good working order so that when he decided to shoot a baby in it's mother's arm they'd work perfectly.

#20 | Posted by YAV at 2021-09-06 08:37 PM | Reply

No it's not too soon to talk about gun control. It's also not too soon to talk about mental illness. This particular case was WAY more about mental illness than guns.

Not to glorify him, but that was some ------- amazing shooting that guy did, and with a brand new gun. One he didn't "know".

So yeah, as you say, the Marines train their members well.

This is easily the stupidest thing posted on this thread. Every other first world country has just as many crazy people per capita as the United States. They have just as much domestic violence, and just as much angst, you know what they don't have? They don't have multiple mass shootings every week, you know why? BECAUSE THEY HAVE GUN CONTROL! There is no way to keep guns out of the hands of crazy people, so how about IF WE HAVE FEWER GUNS? It would be reasonable to assume that fewer guns would mean fewer mass shootings. But of course the GQP won't support that, because they really don't give a damn about anybody's life, especially children's lives. The GQP is a death cult.

Tell,us, oh wise one, what gun control law would you pass that would have prevented this particular case? This was a deranged, homicidal PTSD addled Marine who thought he was acting on orders from God to murder little kids. With his infantry training, I think he could have easily accomplished that without a gun.

So yeah. THIS PARTICULAR CASE WAS MORE ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS THAN GUNS. But you think that's stupid. Says more about you than me.says your head is up your arse.

The real 800 pound gorilla in the room is militarism. The endless wars abroad that create these monsters. If this dude had never "served",I bet nobody would have been killed.

War is an abomination, it creates societal problems at home too. This guy was a time bomb waiting to go off.

A strong "defense" industry and an obsession with using violence to solve everyday problems with other countries has created disorder and death here by our own.

Do you know why you never hear stories like this in Japan? Because the entire country isn't armed.

How about Switzerland? Strict licensing of guns and ammo. You don't just get to keep ammo in the home for shooting people anytime you feel like it.

There are laws that work.

#37 | Posted by Sycophant at 2021-09-08 12:13 PM | Reply

"Do you know why you never hear stories like this in Japan? Because the entire country isn't armed."

But they have had mass murders committed using knives/swords, arson, and poisoning.

It's hard to stop crazy, but we do have red flag laws and the one in Florida has been used thousands of times since enacted in 2016. This tragedy like many others had a perpetrator that showed many red flags but those close to him choose to do nothing.
His girlfriend of 4 years knew he suffered from PTSD, and said he had become increasingly erratic even telling her he could talk directly to God. She knew he had guns and plenty of training on how to use them. He worked as an armed security guard, so she knew he carried a gun daily while conversing directly with God.
Didn't she have some responsibility to society to alert the authorities or were her rights and freedoms more important?
