Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, September 06, 2021

Robert Reich: The former president's attempted coup is not stopping. He still refuses to concede and continues to rile up supporters with his bogus claim that the 2020 election was stolen. Tens of millions of Americans believe him.

@#1 ... [pasture pastries] ...

Your comment does not negate the premise of the article.

That aside.

From the cited article...

...Last Sunday, at a Republican event in Franklin, North Carolina, Congressman Madison Cawthorn, repeating Trump's big lie, called the rioters who stormed the Capitol on January 6 "political hostages."

Cawthorn also advised the crowd to begin stockpiling ammunition for what he said is likely to be American-versus-American "bloodshed" over unfavorable election results.

"Much as I am willing to defend our liberty at all costs," he said, "there's nothing I would dread doing more than having to pick up arms against a fellow American."...

[emphasis mine]

Oddly, Republicans seem to have no problems killing off their fellow Americans via COVID.

So Republicans think it is OK to kill off their fellow Americans indirectly via COVID, but it is not really OK to kill off their fellow Americans via arms?

Jus' askin'

(but it is a serious question... Anyone?)

@#4 ... It's odd that people will tell you what an idiot Trump is, yet fear he will pull off a coup. ...

It is not odd.

Fmr Pres Trump may not be able to think strategically to pull off a coup. But there are people around him who can. (why do you think so many fear the retention of telecom records regarding Jan 6?)

So the real question you should be asking is --- who is advising fmr Pres Trump and what are thy telling him to do? ... And for what end goal?

#5 | Posted by LampLighter at 2021-09-07 12:08 AM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

LAMP

"... And for what end goal?"

Stephen Miller would be the likely suspect and they don't even try to hide "for what end goal" any more.

My question would be "what is the source of the dark money?" which would solidify the question of the end goal.

Excellent question.

"Follow the money."

As has been mentioned repeatedly in comments in the recent past here.

Followup thought...

If the reaction to the request for telecoms to retain records was as, ummm, anal-pore-clenching as it appeared to be....

What might you think the reaction would be to a similar targeted request for banks to retain transaction records?

Hmm...having read the above, I would have to
say that you all are both right and wrong.
I live currently in West Virginia, I've lived
30 years or so in very Red Nebraska before moving
out to the East Coast. Republicanism comes in many
flavors, but a few things I've learned living the
majority of my life in Red States. There is a breed
of Republican that the American Govt. and Law Enforcement
should ABSOLUTELY Fear and take seriously. And that breed
is the 'Gun Freak Insurrectionist'. I didn't see many back in
Nebraska, as most were what I'd call 'Diner Republicans',
old farmers and such that would go to the diner and gripe
about Washington for a couple of hours and armchair quarterback
what They would do, if in power. Not the best or the brightest folks,
but essentially harmless. But these Gun Freak Insurrectionists, I've
both seen and heard their rhetoric in the diners and cafes and bars of
WV. These folks ARE DANGEROUS. They are unhinged, many are preppers,
they are well armed, and many are religious evangelical NUTS or White
Nationalists, or both! They are fully prepared to go and meet their
maker and die for their Looney Cause. They are a Clear and Present Threat
to this nation's sovereignty. And Law Enforcement should never take their
eyes off of them. So in short, for most of the GOP, I would say there is
not much worry. But for that last group, for those diehard died in the wool,
drank ALL the Koolaid types, THEY should be tracked, followed on social media,
and constantly monitored for the threats that they are.

I dont know what to say EarthMuse.

You label the "diner Republicans" as harmless, as you dont view them as a threat to your point of view. You dont care about them. You dont care about how they feel.

But the other's, you are scared of, because they can actually defend themselves. You cant make them bend to your point of view. Why would you be afraid of them?

Maybe you should listen to them and understand why they feel like they feel.

But you wont do that. Because it would include you having to deal with them and not get everything you want in our Republic.

I'm not attacking you Earth, please dont get me wrong. What I am attacking is the mode of thought that not everyone deserves a voice in this Republic we have (not Democracy).

For an ideology that always talking about listening, I've found liberals are the ones who do the least of it.

I totally agree. I lived in Alaska, where you can buy AKs at yard sales. The ones preparing for Christ's war are dangerous... but Alaska is remote with lots of room to play their preparation war games eating mre's.
WV is close to DC and a festering pool of white misery. Poor, drug-addicted, and looking for someone to blame. They live among good people who roll with the punches as most of us have done. They don't represent everyone but they dominate the landscape. It's heartbreaking.

I don't think you can blame all of what's happening there on the collapse of the mining industry but do think WV is another ground zero of corporate enslavement and cruelty creating a population of effed-up crazies itching for something while scratching in all the wrong places.

So what was the point of that? I know the type of Republicans he is talking about. I grew up with them. Their views are fundamentally different from my views today. Today many of my friends still fit that category. Different approaches to the same problems is what I see when I talk to these people. Not willing to open their mind to possibilities not to mention to try them.

However the 'Gun Freak Insurrectionist' Earth is speaking of I am also all too familiar with. Their used to be a few but they are multiplying like rabbits in rural areas - folks just oozing hatred. If you think the "liberals" here are full of hate, you need an education on hate. These are people who are on a hair trigger and there is no "talking" to them. You just get shouted at - even if you agree with them. Barely controlled rage over pretty much nothing. All these school confrontations we have been reading about? Yup - those folks. They are all about unreasoning hate, intimidation and worse I am afraid. A very good friend has gone down that path. One of the nicest people you could hope to meet. Would bend over backwards for people. A pretty successful guy too. Now to listen to him you wouldn't recognize him.

Advocating for the overthrow of the US Government is a crime. Lock them up and ban them from office.

18 U.S. Code 2383
Whoever incites, sets on foot, assists, or engages in any rebellion or insurrection against the authority of the United States or the laws thereof, or gives aid or comfort thereto, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

And the next time they try anything like Jan 6, drone strike them. That's how they want us to deal with terrorists, then that's how we'll deal with them.

You label the "diner Republicans" as harmless, as you dont view them as a threat to your point of view (1). You dont care about them (2). You dont care about how they feel (3).
But the other's, you are scared of, because they can actually defend themselves (4). You cant make them bend to your point of view. Why would you be afraid of them?
Maybe you should listen to them and understand why they feel like they feel (5). But you wont do that. Because it would include you having to deal with them and not
get everything you want in our Republic. I'm not attacking you Earth, please dont get me wrong. What I am attacking is the mode of thought that not everyone deserves
a voice in this Republic we have (not Democracy). For an ideology that always talking about listening, I've found liberals are the ones who do the least of it.

Answers (by the numbers I inserted above).

1). Diner Republicans or casual Republicans I don't view as a violent threat. An ideological threat (as in their refusal to acknowledge or believe that they should
have to wear masks to help slow Covid spreading, or in not believing in, or acknowledging the role of humanity in Global Warming and Climate Change...yes, they are a threat.
But less so a threat to the Republic, and somewhat normal operations in government, civil life, etc...
2). Total B.S. you are blowing out your @ss...(one thing I've learned debating the GOP, is when they've got nothing, they reach for the Fiction, and just start making stuff up).
A). I hail from NE, and so yes, still have many H.S. friends and acquaintances there that are staunch Republicans. B). I live in WV, and so put up w staunch GOP in every bar I attend,
(which is frequently)...
3). more crap... I care about them. I would like to understand them. I understand SOME of their anger, and their frustration (though I think their targets are totally off). It's not
the black man or the brown man keeping them poor and with little hope, but white male (and many times Conservative) CEO's and the like.
4). definition of defending yourself is if you are threatened directly by another...there are extremely few hippies, lefties, liberals, progressives, or the like THREATENING those on the
Right, despite the fiction that Faux News brainwashes its followers with about Antifa. The Right, on the other hand, wants to wear their AR-15's under my nose, and wants me to say that is
fine... well, its not, it's insanity...
5). I listen to the Right nightly as I go to the bars. Do I openly challenge their beliefs? Hell no! I want to keep getting let in to those bars! Do I frequently try to moderate their
tone by saying stuff like, "Well I don't know if any one Party is at fault, both Parties seem to have their fair share of idiots in them"... I say that ---- all the ---- time, to mixed
results...

Boaz, I don't mind a response from the Right to one of my posts, indeed, I wish their were more, but A.) don't pretend you know me well enough to speak for me on issues, and B). it's
just pathetic if you have to make up my supposed responses to issues. Bad form man, bad form...

Boaz, here is a simple question, why should liberals/democrats/progressives respect the feelings/opinions/actions of people who want to overthrow an election and have shown a propensity for violence to that end?

We have listened to them. They are spouting lies and conspiracy theories. THEY refuse to acknowledge reality. How is it the fault of liberals/democrats/progressives that many conservatives act the way they do?

Consider Covid. Science and common sense say that wearing a mask protects others and yourself. It is a simple act. Why are liberals/democrats/progressives beholden to accept the position of anti-maskers? Their actions are literally killing people? We have listened to them, it is just their position is irresponsible and dangerous.

Clown,

When did I ever claim to be reformed?

I'm not the one telling others how to live.

Actually I believe Biblical sexual sins apply to gay and straight people.

I believe in forgiveness through repentance and acceptance and that God sees us all as sinners.

Of course you do.

I'm not going to forget you preaching the horrors of homosexual equality.

Speaking of the horrible repercussions you envisioned for homosexuals. Because they dared to be seen as equals under the law. Because churches allowed homosexuals to get married.

Why don't you tell us how misogynistic homosexuals are. You love to insert that bullshht into every conversation.

Trump walked to St. John's Church, which had been damaged the day before during protests over racial injustice. As he did, law enforcement violently cleared what had been mostly peaceful protesters in Lafayette Park.

#84 - we all know which riots you won't refer to. It's curious. Haven't you said you don't and didn't support Trump, yet here you are apologizing and excusing him and the carnage he brought on America? From telling police "not to be too nice" to "I'll pay your legal bills" to inciting the riots and the attempted coup on January 6tth.

There has not been as vile a piece of ---- that sat as President of the U.S. in my entire lifetime as Trump, and I don't care one bit about the clearing one group, the U.S. Park Police being cleared when we saw exactly what happened. They weren't the driving force on that day:

Specifically, the report found that Bureau of Prisons officers on the scene used pepper spray against protestors and that Metropolitan Police officers used tear gas, despite orders from Park Police not to do so.

Additionally, Secret Service deployed against protestors before the first dispersal orders were given - and warnings asking demonstrators to disperse were not heard by protestors before police started aggressively clearing the park.

So you tried to hide behind the USPP being "cleared" and attempted to pass that off as if nothing happened.

Nothing you say has any credibility. Absolutely nothing. How can it? How can a single thing you post be trusted?

You believe people should live the life they choose.

Isn't that the definition of freedom?

And yes, people should live the life that they chose so long as they do not harm anyone else in the process.

Be kind, be happy, be yourself.

It's sad when people deny their true selves in order to fit into what they think others want them to be. "God" is just a collection of contradictory rules written by men over the history of the world to force people into obeying them. When the bible talks about how to treat your slaves properly it voids itself.

I don't need an outdated bronze age collection of hypocritical myths telling me right from wrong. I know owning other humans is morally wrong.

BTW, are you eating pork? Shrimp? Wearing mixed fabric garments? Tsk tsk tsk.

At some point people are only representing themselves and not a particular religion.

Using homosexuality as an example, some people already have strong feelings on the subject before becoming a Christian and then use the Bible to justify their hatred.

I believe more mature Christians look at things a little different.

Whether or not you agree with the view of those protesting in 2020, and whether or not you believe the violence was justified doesn't matter. It was not an attempt to overturn a free and fair election and install a dictator.
1/6 was just another step in what has been an ongoing attempt to dismantle democracy and it isn't over. Right now I see Trump running again in 2024 with better than even chances of winning.

First. You should ask clown what he or anyone else believes. Not tell them.

Second it's "not as long as (we) approve".

It's "as long as it does not pick MY pockets or break MY bones" ... then we "approve". Though "approve" is even a bit strong.

Quantifying the numbers:
2016:
Trump: 62,984,828
Clinton: 65,853,514
Clinton up by ~3,000,000 votes.

2020:
Biden: 81,268,924
Trump: 74,216,154
Biden up by ~7,000,000 votes.

From 2016 to 2020:
Trump increased his vote difference by ~11,000,000
Democrats increased vote total difference by ~15,000,000

This is because Trump was so unbelievably polarizing. Personally those numbers and the result of the 2020 election were dissapointing to me. Trump should have been beat to s**t. That we have that many s**t for brains people in the United States is depressing as hell.

#117 from your article:

"Opposition to the Equality Act" This is where intersectionality gets absurd. Plenty of lesbians, especially athletes, oppose the Equality Act. Given how few people are actually trans-women and how few of those who are trans-women would actually benefit from it, I'd argue that opposing it is a net win as lesbians and lesbian athletes in particular, outnumber trans women by a lot. This is a situation where LBGTQ only applies to trans women and their win is a loss to lesbian women, who outnumber them. Since LBGTQ isn't monolithic and is actually various groups that share some common goals and plenty of competing goals, opposition to this is a net win for the LBGTQ community overall.

"Appointed anti-LGBTQ judges" It's a talking point. No cases cited where any of these judges ruled against statutes, law or the Constitution in order to achieve an anti-LBGTQ result.

"Joked about Pence's desire to hang LGBTQ people" - So he makes a swipe at Pence and that hurt the community? Beyond dumb.

This is a real gem:

"Sexual Assault: DeVos rescinded Title IX rules related to schools' obligations to address sexual harassment, including sexual violence. By eliminating the Obama-era rules, DeVos increased the standard of proof from "preponderance of the evidence" to "clear and convincing evidence" making it more difficult for survivors of sexual assault to obtain justice. LGBTQ people are disproportionately affected by sexual assault and harassment, and the stigma that many LGBTQ people face can make it more difficult for survivors to report."

First off, this has nothing to do with LGBTQ. What this Obama-era "dear colleague" letter did was turn college campuses into kangaroo courts for adjudicating sexual assault claims stripping defendants of any notion of innocent until proven guilty. Over 230 college men have successfully sued various colleges for violating their rights over this insipid policy.

Here's the biggest problem with your article - I went through all of the bullet points and 3 sentence explanations and in a few instances I thought that maybe a point could be made that certain actions adversely affected at least some members of the trans community. Trans is a very small part of LBGTQ and again, the various groups that make up that moniker oftentimes have competing interests. Google: TERF

Court cases are often overly technical. I was pissed when SCOTUS shot down the DACA case on a technicality, especially given it was enacted without having to jump through any of the hoops the court required to undo it. But ultimately it was the correct legal call because the prosecution didn't properly set up the case. Same thing here. Do the work.

For the record, I oppose this Texas law. I think abortion is gruesome and I am appalled by the amount of dehumanization that it's most ardent advocates employ. But it's so ingrained now, after 5 decades, that it needs to be legal because black market abortions (which will absolutely happen) will be far worse.

Roberts is more concerned with with the practical application of the law and he's not a jurisprudence fetishist.

#130 | Posted by Alexandrite at 2021-09-09 12:34 AM | Reply

SCOTUS isn't there to deliver political outcomes, either way. The court didn't enshrine this Texas law. Plenty of avenues still exist to get it overturned. This is still a very open issue. Now, had this been a 5-4 ruling that this Texas law doesn't violate the constitution....with Starre Decisis I'd be with you up to a point. Given that it's a law, it could still be undone by legislative measures, selective enforcement, etc.
