The NCDHHS said the numbers underscored an urgent need for vaccination among school children as soon as possible. Children 17 and under were 31% of the state's new Covid-19 cases, the highest since the pandemic began, the health department said.
"We need everyone, including our student athletes and their coaches, to increase layers of prevention to fight this more contagious Delta variant: Don't wait to vaccinate and urge others to do the same," NCDHHS Chief Medical Officer and State Health Director Dr. Elizabeth Cuervo Tilson.

I ref soccer. No questions about vaccination status, no masking. The scrum in front of the goal on a corner kick is prime opportunity for transmission. Tuesday night I was the only one on the field with a mask during the pregame when we have close contact with the coaches and players. Seriously considering turning back the rest of my games if there is a significant local outbreak in schools. Of course, that is probably too late.
