Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, September 12, 2021

Japan initially struggled to get its Covid-19 vaccination program into full gear, but now that it has, the percentage of its population that has received at least one dose has edged past the level achieved in the United States -- leaving Americans last for that category among the world's seven wealthiest large democracies.

Because of the Trump cult, even though Trump and his wife were both secretly vaccinated back in December. And most other leaders of the Trump cult. At least Sean Hannity admitted it and advised his listeners to get vaccinated. Even though I have little use for him I will give him credit for that.

Every time I hear about Trump's "secret vaccination"

You didn't hear those words here on this thread because they weren't written. What was written is the truth: Trump and Melania were "secretly vaccinated" compared to both Joe and Jill Biden and Kamala Harris who received their vaccinations live on television to show Americans there was nothing to fear.

Donald Trump, Melania Trump secretly received COVID-19 vaccine in January

March 2, 2021

Former President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump received coronavirus vaccines in early January on the advice of doctors, according to a Trump adviser speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the ex-president's medical history.

Aides did not disclose why Trump was vaccinated in secret.

Other top officials, including then-President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, and then-Vice President Mike Pence received shots in front of television cameras.

Nothing says 'I'm a true liberal' more than intentionally misstating what others clearly say and then mock them for something they didn't say.

"You didn't hear those words here on this thread because they weren't written. "

Trump himself claimed there would be a vaccine before the end of the year. He told Americans they should take it in December. If he is telling Americans they should take it why would one think he wouldn't?

Again, Mr. Deflection, that is not the issue. The issue is you mocking someone for precisely expressing the truth. Trump secretly receiving the vaccine and then not publicly saying anything about it until March is the issue. The entire point is that his Vice President got his shot in public and both the then incoming President, his wife, and the incoming VP all got their shots in public. If you want to encourage the public to follow your lead you set the example by your actions.

Words from a man who's documented as lying over 30,000 times as President are virtually meaningless. You lead by example, not by talking about something and then hiding what you're done yourself. It would have been fine had Trump not wanted his shot on tv, but he should have immediately issued a press statement or trotted out the doctor who gave him the shot like he does after his annual physicals.

And why are you defending what Trump did? What liberal thinks that his stewardship of the entire Covid crisis is anything to view positively when the United States leads the world in Covid deaths and infections?

Your slip is showing bigtime.

What does he expect will happen when people lose their income due to his mandates? Exactly what he wants to happen.

Why would anyone lose their income for refusing to take a Covid test? While you're busily hyperventilating pure ignorance, Biden only mandated that workers in companies with more than 100 employees be tested weekly for Covid. If workers are or decide to get vaccinated, they no longer are mandated to take a test. It's a testing mandate with a vaccination opt-out, not a vaccination mandate.

Also, employers have to both pay and allow workers the time to get their tests, so I ask you again, who exactly is going to lose their income and for what reason? Do you want to work beside someone who has Covid and not know it? Do businesses want their employees to become sick, potentially infect other workers, and cause staffing problems for the company?

Please stop whining, workplace Covid testing is in every business' best interest as well as every employee's especially if no other mitigation practices are in effect.

Do you understand that "compliance" is the worker being paid to allow a swab to be placed in their nose for a couple seconds? That's it!

Again, who isn't going to comply? The entire point is simply to make sure that each worker is not actively infected with Covid. Why wouldn't anyone want to know this for themselves and their own families?

You're not making any sense. No one has the right to be employed by a private company or even governments. All employers have the responsibility to insure that every employee works in a safe environment. That is all testing insures. The businesses don't want Covid infected employees on the job, do they?

"Every time I hear about Trump's "secret vaccination", I laugh. I guess people who keep saying this don't know the meaning of the word secret."

Every time I read a ridiculous post like that I remember other American leaders getting their vaccinations in public to encourage the American people to do the same. Did Trump do that? No he didn't and why? Because his personna is based on opposition to legitimate authority. If our government encourages you to do anything then oppose it even if your own life is risked... even as the Trumps were secretly getting vaccinated themselves....

Pretend all you want but they hid their vaccinations when accepting the vaccinations by the majority of Americans could have saved thousands of lives. We all know people infected right now who refused vaccinations, I know of several children over 12 who weren't vaccinated but who are now fighting COVID. Donald and Melania could have done America a real service just by adknowledging their own vaccinations and recommending it to their cult members. But they didn't because their image among the cult members depended on their opposition to science even as they allowed science to innoculate themselves. The worst kind of hupocrits; i.e. those willing to sacrifice your life but not their own for a cause. And the "cause" is what? "I love the poorly educated." The dumber you are the more Donald Trump loves you.

What I'm saying is that Joe Biden is intentionally and unnecessarily inciting division and civil disobedience.

By protecting workers in the workplace?

Please back away from the hyperbole, you're obviously drunk on it. Biden mandated that workers be tested weekly for Covid during a worldwide pandemic and you claim that doing so is divisive because idiots misrepresent what he actually did?

NO ONE is mandated to get a Covid vaccine. What they are mandated to do is to take a Covid test every week - for which they will be paid for as a function of their employment.

And kindly explain to us all how civil disobedience will stop the spread of the virus and keep Americans from getting sick and dying? Have you forgotten that the virus is all of our enemies, not simply Joe Biden's? Joe is trying to keep people well and alive. What is your goal with civil disobedience? Spread misinformation and ignore settled law from over 100 years ago?

George Washington mandated that his troops take live smallpox virus vaccinations during the Revolutionary War. Even before the US was founded native governments both mandated vaccines and quarantined ships and crews believed to be carrying disease. Government's chief role is to protect its citizens, which is the sole goal. When the pandemic is over, so will be any testing mandates.

You're either for the virus or for stopping it, which one is it?

#51 | Posted by tonyroma at 2021-09-13 11:10 AM | Reply

Others will chose not to comply, lose their employment and may also act out in other ways.

Can you name one American who'd rather give up their job than to take a Covid test for which they're being paid? What would refusal be proving? Total disregard for everyone else living in our society?

Are you really that touched as to not understand even vaccine skeptics want to know if they're infected?

The division is being sowed by those like you through sheer ignorance of both the mandate and the settled law supporting it. For the last time, there is no vaccine mandate! There is a weekly testing mandate based on maintaining workplace safety and people can opt out by vaccinating themselves, period.

Maybe you should check the list of mandatory vaccines that the state of New York requires before heading to your local lawyer to file a suit.

And there's this little portion of federal law:

Section 361 of the Public Health Service Act allows the Health and Human Services Department or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to make necessary measures "to prevent the introduction, transmission, or spread of communicable diseases from foreign countries into the States or possessions, or from one State or possession into any other State or possession."
Tell us again how vaccine mandates aren't wholly legal and have been since before America was founded. You obviously don't have any idea what you're talking about.

Yet again,

[V]accine resisters carry on about violations of their freedom, ignoring the fact that they don't live in a bubble, and that their decision to stay unvaccinated infringes on everyone else's freedom - the freedom to move around the country, the freedom to visit safely with friends and family, the freedom to stay alive.

The Supreme Court made this point more than a century ago, when it upheld a fine against a Massachusetts man who refused to get the smallpox vaccine.

In a majority opinion that echoes powerfully today, Justice John Marshall Harlan wrote, "Real liberty for all could not exist under the operation of a principle which recognizes the right of each individual person to use his own, whether in respect of his person or his property, regardless of the injury that may be done to others."

Refusers' hollow appeals to "freedom" are especially hard to take considering that Americans already accept countless restrictions in the name of safety: We are required to wear seatbelts, for example, and to get vaccinations to attend public school.

No person has the right to spread disease to other citizens as a matter of their personal freedom and liberty.

#62. Disease will always be with us. I'm reading that COVID may be endemic at this point. We are going to have to figure out to cope with it without living the rest of our lives like bubble boy.

When it comes to a vax mandate I'm deeply divided. I hate authoritarianism. Hate it. I also question whether POTUS has the power to do this unilaterally. Of course the slippery slope is there too. On the other hand when sifting through all of the crap an honest and open assessment of the vaccine shows an overwhelming positive over the risks and potential side effects.

CNN did a deep dive a couple of months ago - I get that it's CNN but stay with me - and vax hesitancy doesn't fall down political lines. It's across the board and the biggest racial demographic that is not vaccinated is blacks.

The messaging has been atrocious. Absolutely atrocious. I know this will go over like a fart in church but at this point the horrible messaging falls squarely on the shoulders of the Biden administration.

"They wouldn't give it to him because they know damn good and well he'd be reelected, and there'd be nothing nobody could do. So, they had to swindle around and scheme around and keep it from him, and just as soon as the election was over, Bam! There we got it."

#62. Disease will always be with us. I'm reading that COVID may be endemic at this point. We are going to have to figure out to cope with it without living the rest of our lives like bubble boy.

Doesn't mean we simply let it run rampant. People in the US are too coddled and unfamiliar with the reality most of the world lives with. our effective public health measures has made us complacent and entitled because most have zero clue why they live the way they do.

And yes, SARS-CoV-2 will become endemic. I've said this for months.

I disagree that it's authoritarian. Government's role by definition is to look after the welfare of the population as a whole. Given the extremely low risk/high benefit of vaccination it's not a reach to mandate it.

The powers of the local, state and federal government to protect public health have been affirmed many times over the years. I think people simply don't realize how much power government entities have when it comes to public health, which is why they keep stupidly saying it's unconstitutional.

CNN did a deep dive a couple of months ago - I get that it's CNN but stay with me - and vax hesitancy doesn't fall down political lines. It's across the board and the biggest racial demographic that is not vaccinated is blacks.

I've seen the numbers. Actually, the biggest demographic opposing vaccination is evangelical Christian rural whites. AA have a high level of hesitancy as well but when you consider the relative proportion of the population...

The messaging has been atrocious. Absolutely atrocious. I know this will go over like a fart in church but at this point the horrible messaging falls squarely on the shoulders of the Biden administration.

This is what Biden has to overcome when dealing with the Trump filth.

Security guards are being recruited to work at mobile COVID-19 vaccination units in Jefferson County, Colorado, following an extended period of anti-vaxxer harassment, Newsweek reported.

The guards will be in place for the foreseeable future so that the county can continue to host immunization events without the fear of workers being harmed, according to the local Colorado media outlet The Gazette.

Earlier this month, Jefferson County's public health agency took three mobile units out of service after a driver in a neighboring county, where the units were contracted to work, smashed signage around the vaccination tents, The Gazette said.

Anti-vaxxers have yelled obscenities and thrown garbage at healthcare workers, according to The Denver Post, and one individual tossed an unidentified liquid at a nurse.

It's not political for me. I want to see as many people as possible get vaccinated. Ideally, without precedent-setting authoritarianism.

If it happens and Biden receives undeserved credit - fine. I really don't care. My concern is public and economic health big picture - as we take measures to try and mitigate the spread we also MUST take into account how certain measures affect broader economic and public health - social distancing increases levels of suicide, substance abuse, domestic abuse, etc. Loss of livelihood for shutdown mandates that make little sense. ALL of these things matter.

Perhaps this type of thinking is beyond your ability...

It's ridiculous that you have to even ask that question, however it's a great question.

It starts with genuine honesty, transparency, humility and a willingness to admit mistakes. It also needs to be apolitical, or bipartisan.

Across the board the information has been fluid. Almost zero acknowledgement of the negative tradeoffs of spread mitigation - social distancing, masking, economic shutdowns, increased substance abuse, domestic violence abuse, increased suicide, critical loss of development for children who missed in person schooling (it's effect won't be fully realized for at least two decades), particularly when we understand that children aren't spreaders.

We see all sorts of hyperventilating over college sports going back to outdoor capacity - in spite of the vaccine. "Mask up, bitch" even though the studies have shown cloth masks are almost completely ineffective. The vaccine shouldn't be treated as a punishment or a political weapon. It should be something most want to get because it's net benefit.

He won't make that mistake again.

Catering to these idiots was his first mistake back in 2016...now it's too late...they're an infectious virus and they have escaped the lab and are free to mutate and spread throughout the world.

I was at the soccer park and noticed an older man writing something on my car...I walked over like I was heading to my assistants car behind mine before heading over to him and asked him what he was doing... "This piece of ---- driving a car not made in the United States...it's not American...he's a traitor." I asked him if he knew how much of the car was assembled in the United States. "Uh, no." Well I said, it is manufactured at a plant in Ohio. Aren't you worried that the owner will see you writing a note on their car? "No, he's probably too much of a ----- to say anything." Oh well, I don't know about that. I think it is awful cowardly of someone to leave message as vile like this and I DON'T APPRECIATE IT BEING PUT ON MY CAR. Also, you don't seem to be keeping up with latest info. Big debate right now over boosters because highest rate of breakthrough infections are in those people vaccinated early on (Jan/Feb).

Thank you for the response. I see a good deal of common ground, particularly getting the partisanship out of it. I understand the information has been fluid, and it is frustrating. What is also frustrating is people not accepting that the information will be fluid, because it's a novel virus. We're learning as we go. Particularly in the early stages we didn't have studies and data on which to base decision making. Add to that the unclear, inconsistent, messaging coming from the White House and contradicting or dismissing health experts, a great deal of confusion and mistrust ensued. And I completely agree that people should want to get vaccinated because everyone getting vaccinated will benefit us all. Without rehashing who's culpable for what over the last year and a half, how do we get there from here? Today's fully vaccinated rate is 54.5%, 63.9% with one dose. It's climbing by about 0.1% daily, nowhere near fast enough. Short of a mandate, how do we convince the anti-vaxxers to willingly take it?
