#19 - I heard a political analyst, maybe David Plouffe, about a month ago talking about how the Dems and Governor Newsome didn't want to make the election a referendum on his time in office, because that never goes well, even some supporters could pick nits with his performance. Yes, he's piloted the state through Covid better than DeathSentence and Abbott, and the state has a large surplus, but people will be upset over closing the schools, etc. A campaign needs an opponent in order to draw a contrast between what we believe vs. the crap they'll inflict on you. It is fortunate for Governor Newsome that Elder became the top GQP candidate because he could play a really effective compare/contrast game, Dotard lost to President Biden by 30 points, so Governor Newsome simply paints Elder as a MAGAt, which he obviously is. With all of Elder's insane beliefs about things like vaccines, masks, science, minorities, and that Stephen Goebles Miller should be POTUS one day, he is incredibly out of step with the majority of CA voters. Add to that all the crazy anti-minority crap Elder's said on the radio over the years, and all of a sudden the only people interested in voting for him are the MAGAts, and now Dems are all of a sudden motivated to mark their ballots and send them in.
It's unfortunate, but Dems need to do a better job of being in front of communities of color, especially the Latino community every day, not just when asking for their vote. I thought they learned that lesson in 2020, and 2016, but they're still learning. They need to create permanent community outreach groups in every major city in every state. It's hard work, but the minority community most likely to cross over are the Latinos because their strong Catholic faith makes them susceptible to the anti-choice rhetoric of the GQP. Fortunately for Dems, the GQP is also the party of white supremacy, and most minorities are hip to that.
