"Newsom was bolstered by a robust turnout among Democrats, who outnumber Republicans nearly 2 to 1 in the Golden State but who had initially appeared disinterested in the race.

But the emergence of Republican replacement candidate Larry Elder, a conservative talk radio host opposed to mask and vaccine mandates, and the surge in Covid cases caused by the Delta variant allowed Newsom to crystallize the choice for voters in the final weeks at his events and on the airwaves."

What a dumb election/recall event. The way the CA GOP handled their candidate selection and platform, you would think the FLDems were advising them, because the whole operation and imaging appeared from afar (east coast viewing a west coast current event, solely through news coverage) to be marred with incompetence.

CAGOP, if they intended to be competitive, needed to find a moderate candidate similar to Neel Kashkari (tech/finance guy, now a Fed Reserve governor) or Schwarzenegger.

At last count 62% of the votes have been counted and 67% of the votes were for Gavin Newsom.

Gavin Newsom survived a Republican attempt to remove him from office as California's governor, ensuring that the Democrat can serve out the rest of his term as the top official in the nation's most populous state, according to an NBC News projection.

AP also projects the win for sanity.

Republicans did a great job of reminding Californians how good they have it. Regardless of Newsom's issues he is still a world better than the GOP governors who have been signing laws to rig future elections, stripping women of their rights and reviving Covid 19. California took a serious look at Texas, Florida, Missouri, Alabama and decided they didn't want to compete with those states in the game of "who has the worst governor"?

Any decent moderate republican had a chance to win, but when it became the guy who wants to give former slave owners reparations... it was a done deal.

Good sign for the democrats future, as long as Joe starts to flip the script the chance of Trumpism coming back into power is slim... that and covid wiping out the un-vaxxed.

This is a huge blow to Donald Trump's expectations for 2024. California's electoral votes were going to be crucial after the voting laws were changed when one of his mini-me imbeds took over the governorship.

And another "best laid plans of men and mice" bites the dust.

(Trump must love losing because he does so much of it)

Good. Newsom is awful but elections have consequences and he won fair and square. Recalls suck. Very anti Democracy. Either impeach and remove him if his actions are so egregious (they aren't) or beat him in the next election.

Basically, the majority of Californians like being ruled over by an authoritarian government.

On another note: Businesses, and citizens fleeing from CA will continue - BUT no problem as Newsom can just raise taxes on those remaining to make up the lost tax revenues.

For a radio guy, Elder's media campaign didn't seem very smart. I heard the audio of one commercial where he attacked Governor Newsom for being of all things too handsome, saying that Newsom reminded him of the guy who stole his girlfriend then dumped her and moved on to another girl. That ad perfectly nails the loser, self-pittying, victimhood of the MAGAts and their cult leader, but it's no way to win an election where he needed lots of Dem voters to either not vote or vote for the recall.

This election was another example of why the GQP all of a sudden hates absentee ballots; when it's easy to vote, lots of people do it. Every registered voter in CA received a ballot in the mail, and people voted in very large numbers for a non-presidential election. If every state had the same policy, there would be a lot fewer GQP officeholders.

Nice thing about the election is that it can be held up as a textbook case of why liberals should never vote for a candidate based on race.

They know they can't. That's why they're obsessed with recalls. Republicans can't win fairly so they find loopholes and tricks to win without getting more support than the opposition.

This is no different than what repubs are doing in every state - trying to find ways to keep power while losing voters. The republican platform now has only 2 items on it - complete worship of donald trump, and undermining democracy. End of list.

#50 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2021-09-16 01:33 PM | Reply

Speaksoftly: Well let's be honest. They also have hatred of black people. Hatred of brown people. Hatred of Asians. Hatred of poor people. Hatred. The Republicans have a lot of items implicit to their platform. Though I agree, these are not things they explicitly promote in the platform.

Time and energy that should have been spent in planning and governing instead spent on campaigning.
And there is a scheduled election, in only 14 months!

Thanks again for nothing, GQP.
I mean, really! Has there been ANY good governance from the GQP in the last eight years? ANY?

Let's look at your flip side, the GQP paradise of Texas, shall we?
--Billions of tax breaks given away every year to corporations
--very reasonable housing prices (well, until 2020, now outrageous as other states)
--no personal state income tax

BUT, the consumer gets stuck with:
property tax rates in the top ten of American states
sales tax rates in top five of American states
Governor, Lt Gov, and Attorney General all dedicated to posturing while thousands die and are permanently injured by Covid
School districts getting sued for the audacity of protecting the teachers and students from a deadly pandemic
a bounty paid to any US citizen for suing people involved in Abortion
aggressive gerrymandering that creates supermajorities of one party
all new highways are toll roads
Third-world nation status for three weeks in February as the power and water supply almost completely collapsed

Gee, sounds like heaven, right?

Lol. The problem for people like you, MSG(t), is that you can actually look these things up: en.wikipedia.org

In 2010, Dem Governor Jerry Brown beat Rep Meg Whitman with 53.8% of the vote to her 40.9%.

Do you ever get tired of being wrong all the time?
