A panel of North Carolina judges in a split decision Friday blocked the state's voter ID law, saying it discriminates against Black people.

Apparently, Republicans in North Carolina formally requested data pertaining to the forms of IDs North Carolinians were more likely in possession of dependent specifically upon race. Those forms of IDs that were more likely to be in the possession of African Americans were exempted from the accepted forms of voter ID.

"The majority decision noted that because Black people in North Carolina are more much likely to live in poverty than white people, they thus are also more likely to "face greater hurdles to acquiring photo ID" as a result of not having a car or being able to get time off from work to do so."

I've heard countless Republicans, Independents, and at least one "Liberal" say this is simply false.

"Judge Nathaniel Poovey dissented from the decision, writing that "not one scintilla of evidence was introduced during this trial that any legislator acted with racially discriminatory intent."

I don't believe "intent" is necessary to make a finding of racial bias.

Should the narrative in #1 be true, that Judge is either lying, willfully ignorant, or immensely incompetent.

A Judge who cares.

He'll be disbarred next year. It's the amerikkkan way.

So that would mean everyone is racist.

So why are we only for one type of racist?

@#1 ... Apparently, Republicans in North Carolina formally requested data pertaining to the forms of IDs North Carolinians were more likely in possession of dependent specifically upon race. ...

Well, that does dound familiar...

U.S. Appeals Court Strikes Down North Carolina's Voter ID Law (2016)
www.npr.org

...The appeals court noted that the North Carolina Legislature "requested data on the use, by race, of a number of voting practices" -- then, data in hand, "enacted legislation that restricted voting and registration in five different ways, all of which disproportionately affected African Americans."

The changes to the voting process "target African Americans with almost surgical precision," the circuit court wrote, and "impose cures for problems that did not exist."

The appeals court suggested that the motivation was fundamentally political -- a Republican legislature attempting to secure its power by blocking votes from a population likely to vote for Democrats....

#6 | Posted by boaz

Only one type of racist is currently trying to keep other races from voting. And is writing new laws to overturn the vote if other races elect the wrong candidate.

Care to guess which kind?

Nobody ever said systemic racism had to be blatant, BOAZ. It was the most significant lesson learned by politicians immediately post-Jim Crow era. Systemic racism can still be effective even if it's not blatant.

So dem blacks are incapable of getting a PHOTO ID. Guess the white dems, if they really care so much, must take them in hand and take them to get an ID. 'Come on man' show you really care about the poor dem blacks and succor them!

This is really that difficult for you to comprehend?

"The majority decision noted that because Black people in North Carolina are more much likely to live in poverty than white people, they thus are also more likely to "face greater hurdles to acquiring photo ID" as a result of not having a car or being able to get time off from work to do so."

Are you willfully ignorant or legitimately incapable of acknowledging and considering nuance?

Nuance:

But between 2000 and 2012, Black voter registration and turnout increased dramatically"delivering the state to Barack Obama in 2008 and rewarding multiple Democratic Party gubernatorial candidates.

"This most recent expansion of African American political participation has been met with facially neutral laws enacted by Republican majorities and designed to constrain African American political power," the court said.

Key to the panel's decision were findings from a political scientist who determined that Black voters were more than twice as likely as white voters to be negatively impacted by the voter ID law.

Those findings came out during a floor debate on a previous voter ID law attempt in the state but were not debated by the state legislature when S.B. 824 was hurriedly passed in December 2018.

"Overall, the rushed process did not allow enough time for the legislature to consider data on who might be disenfranchised by the law, to receive public input, or to debate all of the proposed amendments on the House floor," the court determined. "In particular, the rushed process did not allow adequate time to consider concerns raised by legislators that S.B. 824 would disproportionately burden and disenfranchise African American voters."

The Judges are blocking an attempt to make elections free and fair even as the Trumpers want to overturn free and fair elections because they didn't win. Unnecessary voter I.D. laws which hare only put into place to inconvenience poor and elderly people are voter suppression techniques which, apparently, most Republicans approve of. I still remember voting every year in a precinct where the polling place people knew my by my first name, as do millions of black voters in poor precincts. So now, we want to deny millions of voters who never had a birth certificate because they were born in rural circumstances the right to vote is just plainly antidemocratic and evil. That the Republican Party sees this as their only path to victory tells us all everything we need to know about the Republican Party. They don't actually believe in democracy any more and are trying to prevent anyone who statistically might vote for Democrats from voting.
The Republican Party has become the bastion of the spoiled white children who believe that whatever increases their chances of winning elections is sanctioned by God, who they also believe is their ally.
I don't think God ever agreed to this alliance but that doesn't stop Republicans from pretending He did.

As it stands now you don't need to present any id to vote in NC, and you don't need to have any id to register to vote. It does seem like there's a potential for fraud.

#15 The Secretary of State verifies each registrant before they are added to the voter rolls. That is how fraud is combatted.

ID doesn't really have any impact on that process.

Your party's highly paid accountants and statisticians have told them that blacks are less likely to have an ID, and it's more difficult for them to get one. That's the ONE AND ONLY REASON you party wants to require them.

Then surely you can point to some fraud that has happened under this system...

Or should we just make it harder for millions to vote because of what you THINK MIGHT happen POSSIBLY?
