Ross Douthat: Would a deadlier pandemic have yielded different political divides?

This one's deadly enough, and with serious physical damage possible if you don't die.

Is that a good enough reason for morons to go unmasked/unvaxxed? No.

A virus that kills off it's host too quickly doesn't get to spread and dies,

At the grocery store today 2/3 of the customers were unmasked. Most likely they are also the unvaxed. Our state has negative ICU beds but beds are opening up because 42 a day are dying. This year there have been more deaths than births and the idiots are just asking for it. I can't understand why healthcare workers would risk their lives caring for the terminally stupid.

I was in the grocery store today too. There were two old guys in line behind me. They both had their masks on. One guy even said to the other yeah I'm just going to keep wearing this mask until it's over it's no big deal.

If the Delta variant had had Been 10 times deadlier we would be seeing armed guards at every Highway going between states and counties, color coded armbands with photo IDs, and entire counties in places like Alabama and Florida where there was nobody Left Alive and not because of Joe Biden the plague would have simply killed everyone who didn't leave immediately.

Many of us old guys know about the sacrifices our parents went through to defeat enemies in WWII. Nothing like that today.

#6 | Posted by TenMile at 2021-09-18 07:55 PM | Reply

We glorify the soldiers but make little mention of the sacrifice on the home front.

And while we glorify the soldiers, we never really asked them to tell us their stories.

We told them our story, of their glory, which vicariously becomes our glory.

If the virus was 10 times deadlier the Democrats would win all 50 states in the next election.

"What If Covid Were 10 Times Deadlier?"

Oh you mean as deadly as the first SARS?
The one that so terrified Obama he set up a White House pandemic task force?

Snoofy, don't forget obama's mask-making machines that we could have used at the start of the pandemic.

I notice from reading the news that, by far, more Republicans are dying from COVID than Demo The crats who will wear masks, get vaccinated, etc. So, as have other "plagues" throughout history, COVID will probably end up being viewed as a benefit to humanity. I honestly do hate saying that but the Plague in Europe is attributed to be the force that created the Renaissance. Labor became far more expensive and thus created a middle class of workers and geve them political power. It changed the world in positive ways. I suspect, that historically, we will see COVID does the same thing. The total inability of the Right to see how they are killing their own, in large numbers, tells me one thing. History does repeat itself and it doesn't usually benefit the deniers of science and, Republicans today, deny science every single day and pretend that is a virtue. Not a smart move if domination of politics is your goal.

You put your finger on it. I've been thinking this a while myself. That gerrymanding won't help at all, if the majority of your voting population dies on you.

But then I guess the dead still vote according to some of the results tabulated after the fact. /s

So what is your measure? How is it backed up that your opinion of "deadly enough" is the same as everyone elses...and is any more or less relevant? The problem isn't your opinion, the problem is you resort to name calling because others don't hold the same opinion as you. I've been saying all along that we need baselines before we react. We need hard numbers of what does the country agree is "deadly enough". Is it .5%? Is it 2%? Is it 10%? And then what are the right actions to take at each given baseline. Like, at .5% we mandate x. At 2% we mandate y. Etc. And don't forget age groups, as science already dictates that events like these are natural and viruses regularly attack the elderly...kind of like wildfires are natural and destroyed much larger areas than they do today in the past which spawned new growth. It sucks, sure. We should use our heightened intelligences to make it better, sure. But to call people morons because they don't agree with your opinion just turns us back into monkeys.

Without those baselines, all we have are people like you who think their opinion is better than everyone else's, to the point you feel you have use hateful words to try to cover up your insecurity. Add to that the fact that you guys are making it sound like the entire country is dying when it is clearly not; some of you would do well to actually research instead of just reading headlines. That being said, I don't agree or disagree with your opinion. It is only common sense to understand that a group of people holding one opinion and wanting to remove the freedoms of other groups of people who don't agree with them is 100% wrong and something the world has been fighting for ages, and the Liberal party is just going back to their roots of wanting institutional slavery. To avoid that, we need laws with baselines that tell us exactly what we will do given a sickness that becomes a pandemic instead of relying on two parties with vastly different thought processes trying to use hate to overcome.

At ten times the death rate that would be one in fifty instead of one in five hundred. If one in fifty Americans were dying of Covid that would be 2% of the population. Our economy would collapse. Which might be the one and only thing that could get right wingers to agree to get vaccinated.

Ross Douthat is a weird dude. Who writes a paragraph like this?

"And as terrible as it is that one in 500 Americans has died of Covid, it's still much easier to have gone through the pandemic without having a close friend or family member die of it " as I have not, for instance " than it would be were the toll one in 50."
