Worked as a poll worker (ballot box closer) November 3rd last year.
I live north of Seattle but was assigned to the Gold Bar ballot drop box with a guy that had some it before. After the money spent on gas, it was 40 miles each way, I was basically volunteering my time as the pay wasn't much.
Drop box was @ a little community park a block off the main drag. Luckily they had a gazebo to shield us from the rain. We basically ----------- with each other, waved to the cars dropping off their ballots.
Had a couple of skeptical citizens come up and ask what we were doing.
This place was very rural, and you can practically hear the banjos playing. This was mountain people and hilljacks. It felt like the south.
This one skeptical wrinkled woman probably about 70 came over and started talking. I'll call her Norma Jean, as she had a constant cigarette in her mouth.
She said I've been watching you guys all night. We said that's your right ma'am and we welcome you to observe the process.
She then said "I don't trust city folk", I said you have a right to your opinion and like I said you are more than welcome to observe us and I believe transparency is a good thing so I'm more than happy you are here to witness us doing our job.
We had a step by step protocol in which we were to and did follow.
She said "I think Trump and Culp (Trump wanna be running for gov) are going to win". I said have no idea of who's going to win ma'am (I kind of did but you have to remain politically neutral as a poll worker).
Started just talking small talk with her and she became more friendly.
As we were closing the ballot box we showed her the steps we were to follow and then did so.
By the end of the night as we were leaving she was downright nice to us.
My co-worker was laughing his ass of after he left and said "that was masterful. You took a hostile woman and had her eating out of your hand by the end of the night!". I said I've had lots of practice working with the public and am good at defusing situations.
