How do stories like this get so much air time? White, blonde woman disappears and it's national news? Seriously, why is this such a big story?

"White, blonde woman disappears"

You answered your own question.

Did her rich parents make this be a national story in hopes of finding her? Alive, I mean?

@32 ... How do stories like this get so much air time? ...

In some respects, law enforcement seeks the air time because of all the additional tips and other information they may garner from people who would not have known they have information to provide.

90,000 missing persons a year, doesn't seem like we see 90,000 stories a year.

Each one is different.

This one has some interesting aspects, for example, an uncooperative (now disappeared) person of interest.

Then throw in the social media publicity the two had gained along their trip because of their disagreements.

The interest was there, the news shows are just feeding into it.

Kind of thankfully I had the good sense to not try and cross the country with someone who had a crippling bipolar disorder.

Law enforcement had them in custody and just let them walk away.

I realize unless she was willing to press charges there was not much they could do, but damn that was one hell of a fork in the road.

Hopefully this is a 'learning moment' for women across America about domestic violence and the different types of people who can be victims. A beautiful, personable, seemingly intelligent and self confident young woman. Not the stereotype of the DV victim. And yet she was in many ways a classic example. Pretty much anyone can be a victim of domestic violence.

+1. And not sure how to frame it into a proper comment, but recognizing the flags that comprise a toxic relationship, or at least being able to identify what a healthy relationship would be. From some of their travel videos - there were some identifiable red flags (in complete hindsight bias), looking from the outside in.

Right.

Because men can't learn to not be murdrers.

Women just need to accept that their boyfriend might murder them, and plan accordingly.

It's the same reason women in Muslim societies have to cover up.

Why wasn't the boyfriend arrested for auto theft when he showed up driving her van?

This summer my girl and I took our van for an extensive trip. Best we got along in ages.
