Check their infection rate and their fatality rate and you'll see for yourself how effective herd immunity is.

Meanwhile, former colony Brazil has a mini-Trump covid denier for president.

I guess the apple fell a bit far from the tree on that one.

I have said it before, I was impressed with Portugal's healthcare when there. It is widely available. It is cheap or free. The staff overall seems very good. And look at that as a people they hit 80% vaccination...

There appear to be many fewer hillbillies in Portugal than in the United States.

Good for them. We are not them. We will never be them.

Maybe you should go there. Funny none of you are moving there. That's not the U.S. and it shouldnt be.

You're right, ZED, definitely more hillbillies here.

Portugal is the poorest country in western Europe. We're the United States.

We'd have had COVID stomped on by now if not for the willfully ignorant and actively hateful subculture that has coalesced around Donald Trump.

We are truly seeing an evolutionary event here. I'm sure things like this have happened before. The people who can't/won't adapt are culling themselves. We are incrementally less likely to be troubled by them in future generations.

speaking of Hillbillies, Boaz has the floor...

"...maybe you should go there! Nyah!!"
lol. Some kids never grow up...

Still fighting those 'schoolyard battles', eh Boaz?

Boaz, in case you haven't checked lately,
the only thing the U.S. is No. 1 in anymore,
is National Debt and Defense Spending. And
where has that gotten us? Losing wars at the
cost of trillions? Failing infrastructure and
nothing getting done for the Middle Class? And
where is the GOP?

Biden is attempting to fix that, and the GOP
and wannabe GOP (Dem Fraud Patsies) like Manchin
are helping to obstruct the way forward.

But then again, that is what the GOP does best,
obstruct real progress, whine that the rich don't
get enough tax breaks, and make elections unfair
so they can continue minority rule...

Maybe you should-- I was there over the summer and the far-right propaganda that you love to disseminate here on this site has taken hold of some of the more limited minds of the country. I'm sure if you tell them you are of one of them they won't shoot you for your skin color, lol.

Not fast enough or thoroughly enough. And they're costing us a lot of money on their way out.

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.' Interesting dichotomy.... considering we had the actual Trumptidumped and our former colonizers all currently have socialized medicine!

Fancy that.

Actually, I think China is a better example of Portugal's success stories. Portuguese Jurisprudence forms the basis of Chinese law, especially in business. Portugal also financed Cristobol Colon.

Brazil is hoping to use its Portuguese connections in sucking up to China. They are itching to take up our share of the soybean market.

Problem is, most of the trump morons who die of covid have already reproduced so their stupid genes escaped accountability.

What is it about portugal that makes them so willing to accept good solutions that other countries resist?

First they decriminalize all drugs and their addiction rates went DOWN.

Then they got 80% of their country vaccinated.

Sounds like they don't just have progressive leaders, they have progressive citizens.

But the Portugese are all on drugs because they don't have our DEA protecting them from themselves. Meanwhile our brilliant nation still fights the "War on Drugs" begun by that freedom fighter, Richard Nixon." We still have an unnecessary and redundant police force known as the DEA which is an entirely unnecessary organization actually instituted to punish political opponents of Nixon, ada, hippies and blacks. That organization has been an utter failure, has cost us billions of dollars, and has accomplished far less than nothing because it is corrupt and actually its agents profit from the "war on drugs."
FYI, we already had the FBI, state agencies, county sheriffs, local police forces. We couldn't even keep them from being corrupt because, where there are drugs there are profits for those who confiscate them and then sell them on the black market.
So, let's all look at Portugal's 80% vaccination rate and then pretend, stupidly, that America is so much smarter that they are BOAZ. What a total fool you are. When one nation wises up and stops listening to the drug war lunatics and actually starts listening to scientists you pretend they are the fools. Buy a mirror BOAZ, it will be your window to see who the fools rewally are.

"Let's hope his apparently insane acts do not become the next social media "challenge," (seriously)"

"Many European countries have witnessed the rise of right-wing (nativist and authoritarian) populist parties over the last few years, which have gained significant votes and sometimes threatened the position of traditional parties. In Portugal, however, right-wing populism has failed to gain electoral support, and the populist discourse is scarcely found in Portuguese politics. In this comment, we offer four tentative hypotheses that explain why right-wing parties with a populist discourse are not present in Portugal: low levels of Eurospecticism, low immigration rates, lack of political space to develop, and lower engagement in communicating that same populism. We conclude that these dynamics create a special balance, and a rather specific political situation in Portugal that does not facilitate the spread of right-wing populism. This balance, we also argue, may be compromised if any of these dynamics suddenly change, potentially paving the way for right-wing populists in Portugal to achieve more political prominence."
