Who wouldn't want a house that doesn't need air conditioning to stay cool? And it would be all thanks to this super white shade of paint.

Black roofs matter if you want solar power.

You still need air conditioning. White paint doesn't magically get rid of the internal heat generated by stovetops, refrigerators, any electric or electronic device or lights.

To relate, we have a house with central air and solar panels.

$2 monthly gas and electric bill has been really nice.

I already have one.

#4 - you are lucky. In Texas, if you are connected to the public utility electrical grid you have to pay $23/mo for the privilege. I've a friend whos wind and solar give her pretty much free electric, but she stays on the grid for emergencies (saved her last February) But the utility company has to buy her excess electricity, so she usually doesn't pay the $23.

Private electric companies have different rules, but few use them.

@#2 ... White paint doesn't magically get rid of the internal heat ...

... or excessive humidity.

Today it is about 75 outside. But I am running a window a/c because the dewpoint is 70.

#8 - AC as an air dryer. Good point, especially for those who live along the Gulf Coast.

In theory if you painted your whole house with this new color it would reflect on nearby solar panels thus your house would be fueled by white power.

@#9

The paint also does not stop the heat that comes in through the windows.

Just me walking to a house cools it 10 degrees!

Much solar energy enters the house through the roof and attic, in spite of high R insulation. I doubt if people are going to be painting their roof white. It would be soiled withing months, maybe weeks to the point it reflects no more than ordinary white paint. That holds true for the walls of the home as well, although not to as great of an extent. But outside walls get dirty, too.

I think given all the points stated in this post, this super white paint is not the energy saving godsend its creators want you to believe.

"Black roofs matter if you want solar power"

All roofs matter if we're going to get the temperature down.

(for those who are humor impaired I am trying to stay entirely tongue-in-cheek this entire comments section and the preceding comment about all roofs is no exception)

How white a roof are we talking here. Whiter than Dylan Roof?

#15 | Posted by snoofy at 2021-09-22 04:44 PM | Reply

A part of me thinks that they should call the shade dylann roof.

But then there would be awkward conversations like.

I'm putting dylann roof on the roof of your church sir.

The hell you are cracker!

(don't stop thinking, there's a good joke in here somewhere about this shade of paint going on roofs and dylann roof)

Wow, 17 posts until someone brought up Trump. That's pretty good for this place considering how many heads he lives in.

I Can Only Imagine a African-American house painter enjoying every single day he spent applying this specific shade.

If I was painting houses with nothing but this color I would actually get a decal for the driver side door on my clearly identifiable uber white paint work truck that read "if it's not white it's not right" simply to drive everyone crazy.

What we really need is a color-changing roofing material. Ultra-white in the summer, ultra-black in the winter.

Something like this would be amazing in Arizona and horrific in Minnesota.

I am getting close.

When I built my house I chose to plant lots of shade trees along the south and west property lines. They are starting to reach the point where the house is shaded during the hot parts of the day. In the winter they drop their leaves so I can gather winter sunlight. A deep soffit keeps the summer sun out of the windows, while the lower winter sun will get in.

Also put in lots of tall windows to allow plenty of air movement along with transom windows inside the house to keep air moving even when the doors are closed.

Our previous generations knew how to cool homes naturally. Air conditioning was a lazy replacement to their methods and allowed for shortcuts and cheap construction.

" Air conditioning was a lazy replacement to their methods and allowed for shortcuts and cheap construction."

Perhaps in the northern climates, but air conditioning is a necessity in the climates where 100+ degree temps are common in the summer time. And as another poster noted, it necessary to keep the air dry in climates around the Gulf of Mexico.

That is why industry in the south was rare before air conditioning. Factories were unbearable to work in during the summer.

How did air conditioning changed the South?

After the 1950s, air-conditioning enabled not just the construction of millions of Southern homes, but also the economic development of the South. It made possible industrial work like printing, food processing and electrical manufacturing that would be hard to manage in sweltering heat."

Okay, snowflake.

"It made possible industrial work like printing, food processing and electrical manufacturing that would be hard to manage in sweltering heat."

Slaves seemed to manage just fine.

We wouldn't be on the DR typing without air-conditioning.
You wouldn't have a cell phone without it.
Nothing with any integrated circuit would exist.

Computers need AC, that is true.

People seemed to get along just fine without it for almost the entirety of human history.

I do appreciate that warming the globe has exacerbated the need for AC, which in turn warms the globe.
