The White House is leaning toward releasing information to Congress about what Donald Trump and his aides were doing during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol despite the former president's objections -- a decision that could have significant political and legal ramifications.

Why should there be any objections by Trump? If his denial of participation in the event is plausible, this would vindicate him.

From the cited article...

..."[Executive privilege is] not really relevant because there's no president involved " there's no such thing as a former president's executive privilege," said Rep. Jamie B. Raskin (D-Md.), a committee member who teaches constitutional law. "That's extremely dilute and not really relevant." ...

Interesting opinion.

#2 - I suppose it's a fine legal line that hinges on the use of the indefinite articel 'a' or definite article 'the'.

FTA:

"... banking on a legal theory that has successfully allowed presidents and their aides to avoid or delay congressional scrutiny for decades, including during the Trump administration."

Trump is a president, but not the president.

I don't think a former president has executive privilege. I could be wrong, but I think these are untested waters.

Trump's insurrectionists say they did nothing wrong so of course we have to make public any information that could prove their innocence.

@#4 ... I think these are untested waters. ...

I agree. That's why I thought the opinion interesting, it has not been tested yet.

What I wonder is, will the SCOTUS give a blanket application of Executive Privilege to fmr presidents? Or will they allow it only under some exceptional circumstances.

I'm currently leaning towards the former, given the current makeup of SCOTUS. They seem to prefer power of Executive Branch over power of the Legislative Branch.

Put on your big boy pants, Joe and release the kraken.
BTW I read an opinion that said since this was all about candidate tRump and not President tRump, executive privilege is moot.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant. The truth shall set us free. Set the record straight.

Diamond Joe and his administration have documents which will put the previous guy and his gang of miscreants in their place as members of a criminal enterprise bent on executing a coup d'etat and installing a fascist government in what should be the bastion of freedom on this planet, the USA. Let's face it--some will vote for this creepy criminal no matter what, but enough Americans need to know the full truth about this man, those around him and his actions over the past four years so that they and we as a nation never again make the mistake of hiring an insane criminal to hold the levers of power in this great country...

I wonder how many insurrectionists once they've done their time will claim it was an Insurrection that they're revolutionaries and they're proud that they tried to kill all of Congress?

too farking funny

i wanted ------- and his cohorts dragged out of the WH in chains on 1/6. I wanted a LONG impeachment trial, not a preemptive surrender by Schumer. I wanted months and months and months of non-stop testimony on every single aspect of the ------- insanity.

But no, dems gonna dem. Letting a golden opportunity to drive a stake through ------- and the republican party-the kind of opportunity that comes like once every couple of decades is so typically dem.

And dems will piss and moan when they lose the house in 2022 and the WH in 2024 and wonder why.

Freaking weak ass democrats

But you keep on dreaming of the SDNY or the NYAG gittin' bad ol -------.

"Bunker Bitch should face a firing squad for inciting this atrocity."

I oppose capital punishment, but some crimes are worthy. Attempting to overthrow the United States is worthy.

In fact, it should be a public execution, on the National Mall. Maybe we can borrow their scaffold. Turnabout is fair play.

Problem is those damned Democrats still believe in the rule of law even though the Republicans do not. Unless you want a revolution, which I do not support at all, then we are stuck with the government we have and Democrats are stuck trying to preserve it through legal and democratic means. Simplistic blaming won't fix our problems, only unity between Democrats and Independents will have the political force to do that but there are too many egocentric voters who refuse to allow that because their own ideas arenn't adopted. If, in Revolutionary War times, we didn't unite behind George Washington and instead insisted upon our individual beliefs, whether wrong or right, we would have lost that war to the Brittish. Same thing when Abraham Lincoln fought the Civil War. Same thing when FDR fought the Great Republican Depression of 1929 and then WWII. Unwillingness to accept that unity among others who basically agree with you but have some reservations about some of the things you believe and thereby enable the Republicans to win elections is just self-defeating. My advice, remember FDR. He brought all of the leftists and he centrists together to battle against the anti-union, anti-labor, anti-government assistance right wing and consistently won and rebuilt our middle class and coincidentally, won WWII, at the same time.
Just imagine what would have happened if hold out Democrats had refused to support him and allowed Republican leadership to prevail at that time.
There is not future in demanding extreme politics, it is Quiotic but doomed to failure and it doesn't just cause your failure, it brings failure to the entire nation. America is a nation that wants change but only at America's pace, try to go to fast and you will just give the GQP more power.

Problem is those damned Democrats is the progressives have replaced the liberals.

FTFY, Danni

If liberals wrest the party back from the progressives and get the party back to its roots, the Democrats will longer be known as the party that constantly snatches defeat from the jaws of victory.

I have difficulty thinking of any reasonable justification for not making public all information regarding Trump's role in the Capital riot/uprising. The fact that it may have a partisan impact is irrelevant in this case given the very real threat to our democracy that the insurrection posed.

Speak for yourself insurrectionist.

Some folks actually believe in trying to follow the intent of the law as well as the law itself. The wheels of government move slow because laws have to be respected.

Unlike Trumpy and trumpism.

How many subpoenas do you think old law and order Trumpy will try to block in order to continue to obstruct the pursuit of justice?

I predict all of them.
