Joshua Green, Bloomberg: The U.S. Debt-Ceiling Drama Is Back, But Democrats Can Finally Break the Cycle -- We've been here before -- in 1995-96, 2002, 2003, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2019. This time may end a little differently.

The debt ceiling is unconstitutional. It's way past time for Democrats to keep playing this idiotic game.

Ignore it. Stop playing the game. Stop pretending that it's real.

"Fourteenth Amendment, Section 4: The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned."

There is no debt ceiling. If a law authorizes spending the money the debt is inherently valid and "shall not be questioned".

#1 I see what you're saying but isn't this more a matter of accounting?

The problem isn't the debt, It's that we need someone to give us more debt.
That someone is Congress. Congress has to say we have more valid public debt now. Debt doesn't just come into existence because we need it.
It has to be "authorized by law."

Congress should just pass a debt AUMF, and the Treasury has pursued that policy for over a decade now, but that's another story. A story that's been going on "Since 1975" if you know what I mean.

---- Republicans create massive deficits and debt via tax cuts and then don't want to pay for them.

Typical hypocrisy by Republicans who created the debt mess, claiming tax cuts would grow the economy. All it grew was deficits and debt. Morons.

Don't vote to raise the debt ceiling, then you as a member of congress don't get paid, your medical insurance vanishes, as well with all the perks of your job.

Problem solved.

FTA: "The dirty secret about debt-limit brinkmanship is that it doesn't do anything to reduce spending."

Bingo.

The madness that is government spending has to stop. $28 trillion debt. That number is so unimaginably high that it is...well, unimaginable. You may as well talk about unicorns.

And the same question: Why have a debt ceiling if it is always raised? The debt ceiling is such an absurd concept, why does anyone pretend it matters anymore?

Although more needs to be done about waste and cronyism, government spending is a necessary part of our society. What needs to stop is government (and especially Republicans) giving the ultra wealthy huge tax breaks and crony business deals, while they continue to push the unpaid bills off to future generations.

I get pretty tired of Republicans calling themselves the party of fiscal conservatives. A true fiscal conservative would have a plan to pay incurred bills. ..Far more likely to be a trait of Democrats.

Don't raise the debt ceiling, ignore it, and continue funding the government as is the law. The Constitution is the basic law of the land, follow the Constitution, ignore everything else. I guarantee you Conservatives support that concept when it comes to guns. We need to follow their principles when it comes to debt. But they donn't really believe in their own principles, that really is the problem in America. One party doesn't believe in the Constitution and the other does and it ain't the Democratic Party that doesn't believe in the Constitution.

"The madness that is government spending has to stop. "

But the madness of tax cuts for the rich can continue. I think we all can see exactly where you get your opinions from. Those with the concept of debt limits should consider....WWII. Would we have won if Conservatives ruled the day then? Probably not, so I have never listened to them and probably never will. Nothing they ever predict or threaten us with comes true because their economic theories are out of date and irrelevant as are they. FDR took their theories and flushed them down the toilet as Biden should do today.

"The debt ceiling is such an absurd concept, why does anyone pretend it matters anymore?"

Because, when there is a Democratic administration is a method of defeating their agenda. When there is a Republican administration wanting more tax cuts it is a meaningless term.

"The Constitution is the basic law of the land, follow the Constitution, ignore everything else"

The Constitution doesn't address a debt ceiling. That concept was created with the Liberty Bond act of 1917. So don't get all partisan and pretend the Republicans aren't obeying the Constitution with their debt ceiling antics. Nor are the Democrats morally superior because they do.

" The debt ceiling was created under the Second Liberty Bond Act of 1917 and is also known as the "debt limit" or "statutory debt limit." If U.S. government national debt levels bump up against the ceiling, the Treasury Department must resort to other "extraordinary" measures to pay government obligations and expenditures until the ceiling is raised again."

We can end this nonsense but will we? Republicans seem to burn themselves every time they touch that stove. I kinda enjoy watching that myself but it hurts a lot of people so I hope they end it.
