Eight people were arrested and three others indicted on Friday after an investigation into the death of Adam Oakes, a student at Virginia Commonwealth University who died in February from alcohol poisoning at a fraternity party, the authorities said. ... [T]he young man's death, which drew national attention and renewed questions about hazing in Greek organizations across the country, occurred at an off-campus party on Feb. 26 at the Delta Chi fraternity house, where he was given a bottle of Jack Daniel's whiskey and told to drink it.

It's not just Greek organizations that have peer group problems about interacting with freshmen.
On campus and off, everyone from students, teachers, the beer and liquor businesses to the local police know there are problems.
Rush week shouldn't be a life or death struggle.

Was he over 18? Then no case unless they physically forced the alcohol down his throat.

Never had an ounce of respect to fraternities or Sororities. Still don't but that doesn't mean that I think the stupid pranks they play should ruin so many lives. It is a little hard to believe that, after so many deaths and so much news coverage of them over the past few years, that this stuff still continues. It does make me doubt that college educations are really goals the idiots that people like that should ever pursue.

Not a very good way to start out in life.

"The police named those arrested as Benjamin J. Corado, Quinn A. Kuby, Riley K. McDaniel, Alessandro Medina-Villanueva, Jason B. Mulgrew, Christian G. Rohrbach, Colin G. Tran and Enayat W. Sheikhzad. They range in age from 19 to 22."

So...just a bunch of other irresponsible frat jerks. No school officials or frat officials that tacitly condone this crap.

Nothing's gonna change.

American drinking culture (British too I think) is a problem.
When I was in uni residence we had to call an ambulance twice because some idiot downed a 26er and then later appeared to stop breathing.
After some parties every sink and urinal and toilet was full of barf. That was nasty with a hangover, especially walking in to the bathroom in bare feet and stepping in it. Why? Young, dumb and full of ---.

TFD, this was easy. Why didnt you check this before posting?

Showing results for whats legal drinking age in Virginia?

21
He or she may confiscate the alcohol and charge you with being in violation of 4.1-305 of the Code of Virginia, which makes it illegal for any person under the age of 21 to purchase, possess, or attempt to purchase or possess any alcoholic beverage.

What the legal drinking age and what I think about this issue are 2 different things. The fact that we as a society put so much effort into keeping those under our ridiculous drinking age only works to glorify drinking in the eyes of kids. They spend years dreaming of the magic that is alcohol.
In my mind 18 means you're an adult and welcome to make your own choices. If one of those choices is the stupid one to let frat boys talk you into drinking yourself to death, well, it just is.

I should have proofread that, but you get the idea.

I agree.

Just soz ya know, the drinking age was upped to 21 to keep alcohol out of high school. Plenty of people turn 18 before they graduate high school, and having them get booze to the younger kids was seen as a big problem. Especially since people start driving at 16. So, they pushed the problem forward to the college years.

If I had to guess, it's a bit like the difference between auto accidents on the highway in Germany and USA. There are more accidents in USA, but accidents are more likely to be fatal on the German Autobahn where there is no speed limit. This is an Autobahn type of accident. If he were 15 it would have been okay for him to ----- out.

What magic? If you had a "magic" fantasy surrounding boozing you were either already hammered or living in your own Lalalandia. People have known for EONS the tragic weirdness of alcohol-induced craziness. I mean forever! Every level of the media is saturated with seriously unflattering imagery of drunkenness! All of it is true!

The "magic" that is alcohol is the $#!t the adults guzzled before the dinner that led to the rip-roaring fistfight house trashing altercation about pepperoni over sausage on pizza... or something equally as trivial.

Maybe it was the getting laid in the back seat by some last-call cutie you drank pretty with barf breath and chunks in its hair... I guess that could be interpreted as something special. Especially when you're 19.
