(CNN)House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin are at a crossroads over President Joe Biden's agenda to transform the government's role in the country. The Democratic leader said Wednesday that the White House needs to sign off on a multitrillion-dollar bill expanding the social safety net before House liberals vote for a roughly $1 trillion infrastructure bill on Thursday. Manchin, a pivotal vote in the 50-50 Senate, told CNN "that won't happen. "While I am hopeful that common ground can be found that would result in another historic investment in our nation, I cannot " and will not " support trillions in spending or an all or nothing approach that ignores the brutal fiscal reality our nation faces," added Manchin in a statement. "There is a better way and I believe we can find it if we are willing to continue to negotiate in good faith."

What does Manchin know about the state of the country's economic affairs that 95% of his democrat colleagues do not? Is he a financial Einstein or could it be that he's trying to protect his personal and family's financial interests as well as the financial interests of his donors?

At one point Manchin's position was that it was to much money to spend. Then it was that it would create a sense of entitlement and now it appears as if his position is that it would be fiscal insanity because there are other pressing needs. Representatives in the HOR are right to claim that he is not bargaining in good faith; especially after he wanted a pause when the HOR settled on a date certain for holding a floor vote on the bipartisan infrastructure bill.

Progressives need to tank the bipartisan infrastructure bill if Pelosi allows it to come to a floor vote. Yes, the infrastructure bill will do a lot of good for a lot of people. But the real transformation comes with the reconciliation bill. It will begin to change the status quo. Maybe that is what Manchin and conservatives are so afraid of.

"we have to elect more, I guess ... elect more liberals."

Hey liberals in WVa! That sounds like a challenge! All of the poor, under-educated people in WVa may be receptive to a liberal's policy prescriptions. In WVa, a liberal would have to be very definitive wrt to their support for gun safety i.e. no one's coming to take your guns.

Let's be honest, W. Virginians want the welfare but are simply racists. They would rather remain poor than to help black people attain equality with themselves. Manchin knows that and plays them like a fiddle to remain in power serving his real masters...the fossil fuel industry. Opposing real reform in the pharmaceutical industry as his daughter actually profits handsomely from would benefit West Virginians but don't expect Joe Manchin do ever do anything like that. He is the epitome of a sell out Democrat and I am ashamed to have him be a member of my party and I hope the leadership punishes him harshly for his opposition to Biden's agenda. Hopefully a primary candidate who promises W. Virginians help instead of just catering to the fossil fuel and pharmaceutical industries.
