More from the article...

...But Haugen's turning point came months earlier, on December 2, 2020, less than a month after the presidential election, when the company disbanded the Civic Integrity team she worked on.

"They told us, We're dissolving Civic Integrity.' Like, they basically said, Oh good, we made it through the election. There wasn't riots. We can get rid of Civic Integrity now.' Fast forward a couple months, we got the insurrection," Haugen told CBS's 60 Minutes, referring to the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol. "And when they got rid of Civic Integrity, it was the moment where I was like, I don't trust that they're willing to actually invest what needs to be invested to keep Facebook from being dangerous.'" ...

Haugen traces Facebook's recent problems to a significant change the company made in 2018 to the News Feed algorithm, which prioritizes the content that is shown to users. Those changes, she said, pushed divisive content to users because that's what drove engagement and profits. "Facebook has realized that if they change the algorithm to be safer, people will spend less time on the site, they'll click on less ads, they'll make less money," she told CBS....

Facebook is not the problem. Human's choosen interests and interactions are the problem. Get rid of Facebook and something will immediately take it's place. We're missing the forest for the gigantic oak. Facebook is only a mirror reflecting an image of ourself we'd pefer to ignore.

Following that to its absurd conclusion ... Capitalism is the problem. According to the article, Facebook altered its algorithms to maximize profits.

By the logic in your comment, if Facebook goes away, then Capitalism will cause a replacement that does the same thing.

So maybe we should be looking at fixing Capitalism?

"Capitalism is the problem."

Capitalism isn't the problem for the same reason as Facebook isn't the problem. Nothing wrong with the ideology of Capitalism just like there is nothing fundamentally wrong with any other form of economic system. What's wrong is that people are greedy for more. If it's Capitalism, they are greedy for money. If it's Socialism, they are greedy for in-border power. In fact, in Socialism, Facebook still exists and they STILL would alter algorithms to maximize profits. The only difference is that profit isn't given to the ones who make the decision to alter the algorithms like they do in Capitalism, the profits would go to the powerful who decides how it is allocated to society.

So getting rid of Capitalism doesn't get rid of optimizing profits. Liberals would do very well to understand that. China doesn't have it's GDP because of Communism, it has it's GDP because people are making profitable moves. How that profit is used for society is where Capitalism, Socialism, Communism, etc. comes in to play. This is a very clear reason why Libs shouldn't be listened to when it comes to economic systems, as a whole they can't think critically enough and use logic to understand the actual architecture of an economic system. But that's OK, the country needs it's emotional side just as much as its logical side since Cons have little emotional ranges. The heart and brain are both important.

Too many stupid people living in squalor would fight you to maintain their meager possession.

Human's choosen interests and interactions are the problem.

Facebook helped people connect and suddenly their outlandish fringe beliefs found support and confirmation.

It's resulting in the fascist transformation of our nation.

Listen to the lady being interviewed and absorb every word. Whatever Facebook was decades ago it's not that anymore it's dangerous.

@#6 ... China doesn't have it's GDP because of Communism, it has it's GDP because people are making profitable moves. ...

So you're saying China has shades of capitalism within its system, a sort of state-directed Capitalism[1].

I do agree. with that.

Of course, that admission of yours seems to blow the rest of your rant against Liberals out of the water, no?

I can certainly say there's a noticeable increase in right-wing content that's being "Suggested" for me on Facebook lately.

"Nothing wrong with the ideology of Capitalism"

Sure there is.

The notion that people are rational economic actors is complete nonsense. Especially poor people.
Another problem is the path it sets out assumes endless growth. Wealth may be infininte, since it's all just a man-made construct, but natural resources are indeed finite.

The problem is perhaps better demonstrated by people like you, who call Capitalism an "ideology" when it's really just an economic tool.
A tool doesn't have an ideology. A tool is used by someone, possibly someone with an ideology, to achieve a goal.
Also, the parts of Capitalism which delve closest to ideology -- are the two faulty assumptions I outlined above.

Facebook is either people my generation (X) and younger faking about how flawless their life is, or boomers circle jerking over their strawmen. All BS and boring.

I do like the DR. Yeah, there's some of the above, mostly the latter, but the users have filtered down to an interesting enough group. Y'all are unique to the internet, for better or worse.

Other than the DR, I only use social media to promote my professional work, which is pretty much researchgate. It has been helpful.

Soooooooo uuum... what did Facebook replace?

Seriously I don't remember anything remotely like it. It's phenomenal.
If anything it feels vaguely high schoolish vibe to me. Sort of creepy.

Forums. Prior to Facebook if you wanted to find "like minded people" you had to search for it and find a forum. Now it's brought to you by a reinforcement learning algorithm that gets rewarded for doing so. With politics being the new religion it gets a heavy priority in search weights.

but it also didn't replace anything viewed a certain way. When it comes to here tool of genocide claim, those exist without Facebook and the flip side is that social media has provided the communications for anti-government protests around the planet and Instagram DM's led directly to the destruction of Gaddafi's regime.
