Federal investigators descended Tuesday on the Lower Manhattan headquarters of the NYPD's Sergeants Benevolent Association, the union headed by fiery and controversial president Ed Mullins, the Daily News has learned.

More from the article...

...Mullins came under fire in 2020 when he posted the arrest report of de Blasio's daughter, Chiara de Blasio, on social media following her arrest during George Floyd protests. Mullins was hit with departmental charges for the violation of NYPD rules.

In another instance during the pandemic, Mullins tweeted that the city's health commissioner was a "b---h" who had "blood on her hands" after she sparred with the NYPD over half a million hospital-grade face masks....

I like how the Sergeants have their own union just for Sergeants. It reflects the top-down authoritarian attitude the police have towards us.

I was not aware of the Sergeants' union before I heard of this.

Other articles I read on this seem to indicate that the Sergeants' union is even more outre than the NYPD union, if so, that is quite telling.

Local NYC TV news starts up in about a half hour, I wonder how much coverage this will get?

This is one of those freakish organizations it started out as a defacto labor organization and slowly mutated into a cops can do no wrong Trump's fascism is awesome group.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had ties to the January insurrection

"started out as a defacto labor organization"

The reason it's called the Fraternal Order of Police and not the Police Union is at the time of the labor movement in this country, about a century ago, the police were commonly brought in to apply violence to picket lines. They were union busters. So they had to find a way to unionize while also attacking other unions. Hence the term, Fraternal Order.

See, the police aren't entirely a tool of institutional racism. They oppose the working class regardless of color.

It was pretty common whenever and wherever labor unions were not smiled upon. For example coal miners might work for a man that hated labor unions so they form a miners Association ostensibly to collect money which in turn would be used to make sure any member would good good burial if he died in the mines. Things of course took their natural course from there.

Lead story on 6PM news...

FBI raids Sergeants Benevolent Association headquarters, union chief Ed Mullins' home

...But two sources familiar with the matter told ABC News the investigation that led to the raids concerns expense report irregularities and is focused on Mullins himself and not the union as a whole....

Why would the FBI be involved in an expense report irregularity case? Wouldn't that be more city or, possibly, state jurisdiction?

#8 | Posted by LampLighter at 2021-10-05 07:11 PM | Reply

Agreed. There is something more than expense reports.

Probably more than that but it amounts to fraud.

He's resigned.
Misappropriation of union funds.
Couldn't happen to a more deserving piece of ----, either.
Now time to lock him away for a long time. After a fair trial, of course.

I too question the rationale for a union only for Sargeants. Is there also a liutenants union and a captains union? Seems rather seperate from other cops must be for a reason. Probably a nefarious one. Police unions, as I have always contended, are all to happy to bust other unions, to arrest them, etc. Allowing our police forces to unionize whild busting the unions of workers is a step towards Fascism. when we are all afraid of the police, all the time, then we are living in a Fascist state. Police officers should have no more or less protection from prosecution or investigation than the rest of us.

More background info...

...His acerbic Twitter posts have included calling a City Council member a "first class whore" and calling a former health commissioner a "b----." In response to the 2014 officer-involved shooting death of Michael Brown, a Black teenager, and the subsequent protests, he said, "Ferguson, Missouri was a lie and a nation of police have been under attack ever since."

Mullins remains a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump.

The SBA's bylaws require Mullins to continue working as a police sergeant; records show that he is not assigned to a specific post. And while he was paid $133,195 by the city last year, his full-time job was running the SBA, which pays him an additional salary.

The union paid Mullins $88,757 in 2019, according to the SBA's most recent paperwork, which listed him as a trustee....

$133k for nothing, plus the additional $88k for the union job?

I guess it was a nice, cushy job if you could get it.
