Former President Donald Trump is directing a group of his former aides to ignore a subpoena from the House committee probing the Jan. 6 Capitol attack and signaling he will go to court to block their testimony to the investigators.

"The committee has subpoenaed documents and testimony from four Trump administration alumni: former social media czar Dan Scavino, former Defense Department official Kash Patel, former chief of staff Mark Meadows, and former White House adviser Steve Bannon. The four men were ordered to turn over documents related to Jan. 6 by Thursday and to sit for interviews with investigators next week.

But Trump is saying otherwise. In a letter that POLITICO viewed, a Trump lawyer tells them not to cooperate with the probe.

The letter stated the committee is seeking materials that are covered by executive privilege, as well as other privileges.

"President Trump is prepared to defend these fundamental privileges in court," the letter said.

It also remains to be seen if the former Trump officials will follow Trump's directions. If they are convicted of criminal contempt of Congress, they could face a year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000."

Yeah, like Trump was prepared to meet his violent crowd at the Capitol Building.

But this is typical; most Presidents don't want to set... precedents, when it comes to Exec Privileges, so they may never have to testify.

Have they tried telling him "p1ss off old man we don't work for you"?

@#1 ... materials that are covered by executive privilege ...

Does executive privilege apply to former Presidents, or only current Presidents?

Criminal conspiracy laws?

The game is afoot. Congress needs to enforce their subpoenas with criminal referrals to the DOJ. All of those subpoenaed should be considered to be flight risks, so detained in the DC jail general population until they testify. March them in dressed in those striped outfits made popular by Sheriff Joe of Maricopa. A bit of humiliation will go a long way to cement their reputations as criminals in a conspiracy ...

Looks like Mr Bannon has formerly declined to provide documents and to testify.

The statement I heard from the Jan 6 committee indicated that they were "considering" criminal referrals. WTF is there to consider and how much time does it take for them to consider?

When the decision was made to issue the subpoenas, the committee should have anticipated that there would be no cooperation. So, within minutes of the deadline for presenting the subpoenaed documents having passed, committee lawyers should have been before the DOJ with the criminal referrals.

Also, the response from the committee lawyers to Trump's subpoenaed henchmen should be something to the effect of: Former President Trump can no longer assert Executive Privilege and as a result, you are hereby compelled to respond to the subpoena immediately. Because of your failure to meet the deadline for turning over subpoenaed documents, the Jan 6 Committee has made a referral to the DOJ that you be cited for Contempt of Congress.

My bet is, they defy the subpoenas and the Democrats don't enforce them.

They'll definitely wag their fingers.

Get ready for the wagging.

Is there any evidence anywhere that Trump doesn't go to court to hide?
The super genius even blocked his school records from being released.

I like catdogs idea of locking them all up until trial, including Trump on obstruction charges(to begin with).
Trumps skin color is orange, now his jumpsuit should be too.

@#3 ... Does executive privilege apply to former Presidents, or only current Presidents? ...

Follow-up question...

What does executive privilege apply to?

Does it allow them to ignore the subpoena?

Or do they have to obey the subpoena and appear for testifying, but then they can invoke executive privilege in response to certain questions while testifying?

Congress needs to immediately refer four counts of Obstruction of Justice to DOJ against Trump. He is no longer the occupant of the WH, and as such he has no expectation of "executive privilege." This is simply an attempt to keep co-conspirators from testifying to his crimes. That's classic obstruction of justice, and contempt of Congress. They need to send US Marshals to Mango Lardo tomorrow to hook him up for his booking photo and perp walk. That would pump President Biden's approval numbers back over 60%. I think part of the dissatisfaction toward the Biden Administration right now is that we don't see evidence that DOJ has any intention of prosecuting Trump when there are OBVIOUS CRIMES right in plain view, the belief by a lot of us that Dotard will run out the clock and skate on his crimes then run for election again in 2024 in a continued attempt to destroy democracy.

This is just beginning to dawn on you?

Again, it has been 10 months already and nothing.

Not that I haven't said as much all along.

Again, let me state, loudly and clearly, ------- WILL NEVER, EVER, EVER be arrested for any crime. Ever.

He could shoot a pregnant woman in the back on the 5 o'clock news and not be arrested.

GET USED TO THAT FACT

Didn't it take two years before charges were brought forth related to Watergate?

Just as an aside, on the whole if you shoot at the king, you better not miss. Even that is a misreading of the situation.

If by some miracle, someone, somewhere arrested -------. THAT would be the end of his political career. ------- arrest photo, his fingerprints on the news! That would be the death. Because it would hit him where it truly would hurt-ridicule.

But, whatever, go back to your fantasies you weak willed dems

We've come along way from Watergate baby, including pardoning him and not pursuing anything like justice against any president since.

It
Ain't
Gonna
Happen

Presidents are truly above the law.

I remind you

10 months have gone by since 1/6

congress can't even hold an effective inquiry

------- and his minions scoff at subpoenas

Go ahead and adjudicate those ignoring the subpoenas, maybe, possibly, perhaps months from now one of his minions will appear before the committee and obfuscate and lie and -------- his way through.

Months later a meaningless, toothless report will be issued, just in time for what? the 2022 election? the 2024 election.

If you are waiting for justice, don't hold your breath.

And dems will wonder why they lose the House in 2022 and the Senate and WH in 2024

------- bunch of wimps

I said it back in January and I will repeat it. NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING was more important than pursuing justice after 1/6 and destroying the ------------------- movement.

Our country's future is at risk

Your enemies know what is at stake, do you?

"------- and his minions scoff at subpoenas"

I heard one lawyer/pundit suggesting next week would be when it would all hit the fan: they're supposed to appear to testify.

That makes sense.

They cannot be cited for not appearing to testify unless and until they do not appear to testify.

The weakness and apathy of the Democrats is going to cause a loss in the next election. I don't believe Democrats will recover from the next loss.
