The league is using the independent Atlantic League as a laboratory for changes that could speed up games and add more drama.

...Baseball has a bloat problem. With every season, games take longer and less happens on the field.

Over the past half-century, the average length of an MLB game has risen from about 2 1/2 hours to 3 hours and 11 minutes. The number of balls in play, meanwhile, has dwindled. Hits are near historic lows, strikeouts at historic highs.

In 1980, roughly 1 in 8 trips to the plate ended in a strikeout. This season, the rate was twice that. This makes for long lulls in the action.

According to the league, the time between batted balls has reached an average of nearly four minutes, up by almost a minute from two decades ago.

It's a worrisome trend for a sport that's competing for attention with instantly refreshed social media feeds and eight-second viral videos....

I long ago gave up on watching baseball. It's more exciting to watch grass grow, something might happen watching grass.

I'd rather see a no-hitter with lots of strikeouts than a game that was 11-10 final score. Watching a pitcher with mastery of a number of pitches turning batters inside out swinging at balls that drop out of the strike zone at the last minute is a thing of beauty. The strategy and execution is a thing of beauty.

Any offense focused changes, they are likely to impact NRFI betting.

If I'd suggest changes, baseball should be made more dangerous. Allow catchers to attempt to block and break their leg (buster posey). If a batter is hit by a pitch, intentionally, allow them to charge the mound for some hockey style scrum.

For golf: hungry gators in every water feature.

These are pampered professional athletes - time to throw some new variables in the mix.

"These are pampered professional athletes"

Yes, yes, we all know you're 5'4" and 285 buddy. No need to announce it.

Not walking off the mound or away from the plate after each pitch and maybe they could spend less time adjusting their junk would help IMO

#6 You're right....lets force them to throw a 99 mph pitch every five seconds until their rotator cuff explodes because you're bored.

#7 | Posted by Nixon at 2021-10-12 08:08 AM | Reply

Lets just skip all this and get right to professional Blurnsball.

@#7 .... .lets force them to throw a 99 mph pitch every five seconds until their rotator cuff explodes because you're bored. ...

If they pick up the pace of the game, I'm sure the pitchers will adjust so that they do not damage their rotator cuffs. Surely you give them that much credit?

The basic problem is that MLB is an entertainment business, not really a sport.

And, as a business, its customers are putting their attention to other areas of entertainment. The MLB is just trying to keep customers from moving on to other forms of entertainment.

#7 Didn't seem to bother pitchers before... look at Nolan Ryan.... throw 100 mph but didn't take 3 minutes to throw a pitch.
He'll, relief pitchers didn't even exist in the old days, those guys threw 500 innings in a year ,now 200 innings is too much.

And if they want to get paid millions for playing a kids game as adults, then they better well atleast keep me entertained.

"The first relief appearance in the major leagues was in 1876 with Boston Red Caps outfielder Jack Manning switching positions with pitcher Joe Borden."

"Firpo Marberry is credited with being the first prominent reliever. From 1923 to 1935, he pitched in 551 games, 364 of which were in relief. Baseball historian Bill James wrote that Marberry was "a modern reliever"a hard throwing young kid who worked strictly in relief, worked often, and was used to nail down victories".[6] Another reliever, Johnny Murphy, became known as "Fireman" for his effectiveness when inserted into difficult situations ("put out fires") in relief."

Cy young had 749 complete games pitched in his career...
9 times he had 40 or more complete games in a season.
Paul Gavin had 639cg's

Last year.. the Phillies as a team had 5 complete games and the 2nd most, the White Sox had 4 ..for the team..for the season.

It's may be the same game but the players used to be alot tougher IMO.

Let the runner who has advanced the most bases start the next inning on that base. So by ending an inning you don't clear the all the bases. It would increase scoring and you would probably see more steals.

One problem with baseball is that it's essentially like 9 small games.

But I'm not a baseball fan. It's too slow. So do some things to speed up the pace of play also.

When the pace is too fast there's no suspense, and that's the only thing baseball has going for it and that only happens sometimes.

Time to bring back Luis Tiant.

Leave baseball alone! Go back to 1972 rules and stop trying to please the haters.
