It's not always clear what the public wants. But a new poll shows strong support for taxing the rich to pay for Democrats' Build Back Better Act.

"A Vox and Data for Progress poll, conducted October 8-12, found that 71 percent of voters support raising taxes on the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans to pay for the bill.

Eighty-six percent of Democrats and 50 percent of Republicans backed the idea. Other tax provisions focused on the wealthy that could be included in the bill " such as tax increases on corporations and capital gains " found 65 percent or more support overall.

Sixty-three percent of voters in the poll said they supported the $3.5 trillion overall plan that includes spending on health care, long-term care, child care, and clean-energy jobs.

The popularity of the Build Back Better Act may or may not make it easier for lawmakers to get the bill over the finish line.

In the Vox/Data for Progress poll, voters were presented with arguments for and against removing a particular provision to reduce costs, such as Medicare benefits expansion or clean-energy policy. Only about a third of voters or fewer supported the cuts. And respondents showed a diversity of opinion on what's most important in the bill."

If the GOP didn't have "guns and 'bortions", they wouldn't even be a Party. They are the opposite of conservative on almost every issue; they are radicals for the rich economically, haters of actual democracy and it's voters, and extremists on social and cultural issues.

The GQP will fight, tooth and nail, against any effort to improve America, they don't want improvement they want recession or even depression if it would affect Democrats in a negative way. They only care about power. They would happily allow Americans to starve if it would insure their ability to maintain power.

@#17 ... the left's obsession with wokeness and strategic idiocy like "defund the police"....

Democrats are not good at messaging, I wish I knew why, but I don't. I just see the results.

Democrats are not good at messaging.

The "defund the police" disaster was just a recent example. It cost them many seats in Congress (and now they blame Sen Manchin for the result of their 2020 disaster).

Going back to Obamacare, the Democrats sat by while the Republicans defined what the healthcare reform meant, while the Republicans defined what the name "Obamacare.".

There were polls that showed that the public strongly disliked the name "Obamacare."

But when they were asked about a hypothetical law called Affordable Care Act (ACA), a large majority were in favor of the healthcare changes that ACA would enact into law.

Democrats suck at messaging.

What really concerns me is that they still have not seen their suckiness.

You see, this is how a consumer economy works. If no one is spending nor consuming, economy crashes. The only reason why anyone would be receiving money from the government doing 'nearly nothing for it' is because without it, the economy would crash.

This is the downside of capitalism in the form implemented here in the U.S. If the economy goes to ----, stimulus is required to jump start it again. You may not like it, but that's the reality we are living in.

Good luck changing it, especially putting forth the meager efforts you do here on the DR.

"Here's one example"

That's what used to be called welfare. D'you know who integrated welfare into the tax return? Republicans. One reason was to eliminate bureaucracy. Another was for a talking point: the more societal credits you throw onto the 1040, the higher the percentage you can claim "don't pay taxes". That's why almost every child-rearing credit, like the AOC, CTC, and ACTC, as well as the Earned Income Tax Credit, have been shoved onto the 1040.

Think about this: when we were kids, if the family up the street had a $1000 income tax liability over the year, and they had it withheld from their paychecks, they were counted as paying income tax. If they also got $100 a month in welfare because they had three children, they were still scored as having paid income tax, because, well, they paid income tax. The fact they also got welfare doesn't negate the fact they paid income taxes. But that same scenario today would be scored as NOT paying income tax. It's not true...but that's how it's currently scored.

Basically, there have been over a half-dozen initiatives put forth, each one increasing the percentage supposedly "not" paying income tax. All but the most recent increase in Child Tax Credits have been authored by Republicans.

Also, the whole notion someone is "paid" to have a child suggests this is for-profit, meaning the "pay" would have to be greater than the cost of raising the child; it's not.

"The top 1 percent's effective tax rate has consistently been below the top marginal income tax rate. Though this IRS data set only reaches back to 1986, another data set shows that the difference between these two tax rates used to be even greater. For example, in the 1950s, when the top marginal income tax rate reached 92 percent, the top 1 percent of taxpayers paid an effective rate of only 16.9 percent. Although the two data sets are not strictly comparable, they nevertheless show the consistency of the gap between the top marginal income tax rate and the effective rate."

It's more like waking them up. When you're raised in a religious theocracy, learning science and history can seem evil because they make you abandon your fairy tales. It's no wonder people raised on fairytales overwhelmingly favor the republican party. Even though their agenda is opposed to everything jesus preached about.

Your cult is just like the taliban, except born in a different place. That's what theocratic conservative thought leads to. We just used to have better laws to protect against it.

#73 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2021-10-18 09:35 PM | Reply

But your cult has done a great job chipping away at those protections. You've molded a system where you get the most power though you don't have the most numbers. So far you've been able to rewrite policies to enforce your theocracy on everyone else. Just like the taliban, ISIS, and every other conservative theocratic cult that preys on the stupid and the desperate. But unlike the taliban you haven't had to use guns, although that might be coming with the way your cult leader drives you morons to the brink of sanity.
