Former President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit Monday in DC District Court against the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection and the National Archives in an effort to keep records from his presidency secret by claiming executive privilege.

"The former president's actions represented a unique -- and existential -- threat to our democracy that can't be swept under the rug. As President Biden determined, the constitutional protections of executive privilege should not be used to shield information that reflects a clear and apparent effort to subvert the Constitution itself," White House spokesman Mike Gwin said in a statement.

Among several legal arguments he's making in court, Trump claims the House Committee hasn't made clear the legislative reasons for why it needs records from Trump's presidency, and that he should have some ability to keep private his discussions as president."

Legislative reasons, lol. How about trying to pass legislation that helps keep a Pres from stealing the election the way Trump... is STILL trying to.

Why not release the records and then let Trump sue after the fact? There is no legal basis for his suit, it is just a stalling tactic, so release the records and mail Trump a tiny violin.

Trumpibunkerboi doesn't want people to know he was crying and screaming like a 2-year-old because he lost.

Why not release the records and then let Trump sue after the fact?

Once the information is released the claim of privilege, no matter how plausible or implausible, is lost. That effects even the most mundane privilege claims of any person in any court anywhere.

There is no legal basis for his suit ...

In the margins there is a plausible basis for some of the Buffoon's claims i.e. national security. Those narrow margins are not presented here. The Buffoon's general claims are weak but not entirely implausible.

... it is just a stalling tactic ...

Yes and generally an effective one.

#5 So two questions:
1. what is the penalty for releasing the records now?
2. if there is a penalty, is that a pardonable offence?

Release the records, get a pardon, move on. It is not like releasing the records is equal to murderous war crimes or treason.

Nothing stopping anyone from releasing the records. Just do it.

Patience Grasshopper. Trumpy is just obstructing justice again. It's what he does.

No man is above the law.

A stalling tactic can only stall for so long.

So Trumpy will spend the rest of his hateful life fighting the courts. Congress is not going to allow him to whitewash Jan 6th.

Either way I will be on the beach or in the redwoods enjoying my retirement.

Here's to Trumpy and his retirement to a wonderful life of testifying in the courts and in lawsuits.

A stalling tactic can only stall for so long.

We're in Q4 of 2021. How long before we have a Republican Congress to squelch any further investigations? Where are we on those 10 obstruction of justice counts from the Mueller probe? What good does being patient do, while the clock is quickly running out?

If it goes to SCOTUS, that's what, another 2 years? In the meantime, our democracy is failing...

I'm so old, I remember when failed coup attempts were handled expeditiously. Republicans don't wait, maybe the soon-to-bi-in-the-minority Democratic Party should take some notes on how to get sh...things done.
