Marketing 101: When brand gets tarnished, rebrand. Facebook is planning to rebrand itself with a new name focused on the metaverse, the Verge reported on Tuesday, as the tech giant comes under fire from regulators around the world over its business practices. The company plans to announce the new name next week, the Verge reported, citing a source with direct knowledge of the matter. Facebook wants to be known for more than social media, according to the tech publication. Facebook (FB) does not comment on rumor or speculation, a company spokesperson said in response to a question about the potential name change.

At this point it is looking like Facebook may do something similar to Google/Alphabet.

Facebook may keep the Facebook name, but apply it only to what is now Facebook. The new entity will be an umbrella under which Facebook will live.

But no one seems to know for sure for now.

This news is the first I've heard of VR ecosystems referred to as "the multiverse," and ... guess that name is going to stick now.

I've heard the term "multiverse" used for VR for a couple of years.

I think that virtual reality is a better description, but I guess it doesn't have the "coolness" factor of multiverse."
