Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, October 23, 2021

Losing the election in November and having to move out of the White House has given him something to focus on, however. He never cared about governing and didn't have much of an ideology to guide him, but he's finally found something he can believe in and a playbook he can follow: his very own Lost Cause. Trump has embraced with gusto the South's strategy after losing the Civil War: Tell your own people that you didn't really lose, and double down on the nobility and honor of what they still believe in. In the case of the Civil War, it was slavery and the inherent superiority of whiteness and inferiority of blackness. The new Lost Cause is of course Trump himself, to whom his followers attach the same kind of gauzy metaphors that came into use after the Civil War: flags (Trump campaign flags, the Confederate flag and the "Don't Tread on Me" banner are in heavy rotation)

The theme of Trump's memorial service will be "But I Won!"

But I don't really care. Just keep his remains out of the Rotunda.

"Just keep his remains out of the Rotunda."

He's too rotund to fit in the Rotunda.

Never let politics or movements become part of a multi generational self image.

Tournament of Roses, you're a little bit naive.

This has gotten irritating. The "no step on snek" flag used to be a perfectly good flag. One could argue quite an anti-slavery sentiment among others in modern usage, and now getting flown often with the confederate flag. SMDH.

To be serious a second, I do wish the media had reacted a little differently when Trump started his Big Lie. Coming from him, it was no shock, and certainly not believable. However the entire media ALL jumped on the same set of phrases - "baseless accusations of fraud," "most secure election ever," etc, which actually had me laughing that since they were all saying precisely the same thing, that was just what someone in on a conspiracy would say. (Obviously, next they'd deny there was a conspiracy! Then next thing you know, you're taking down a pizza joint and the crafty bastards filled in their entire basement like it was never there!) Ahem. Anyway. But more importantly, and I blame our sound bite bumper sticker culture, but you actually had to look hard to find any major news story that described the safeguards and changes they made since 2016 that made it secure. I feel like that should have been the front page headline of "here's how he's lying" on every reputable news source. I initially supported full on hand count audits too, just to show they took the accusation seriously and Trump was nuts, although after a while I gave up on that theory since it was clear they would just keep pushing it further and never be convinced. But there's no way something like 70+ % of Republican voters should have been able to be convinced Trump won. Yeah, the lie is his fault, but the media really dropped the ball.
