St. Jude Children's Research Hospital promises not to bill families. But the cost of having a child at the hospital for cancer care leaves some families so strapped for money that parents share tips on spending nights in the parking lot.

I'd like to see non-profit reform. Colleges/hospitals/foundations hold vast sums of non-taxable wealth and income. A reformation like Henry VIII's.

"non-profit reform."

Don't reform something you don't understand.

???

Do people really thinks that Saint Judes is going to pay their expenses while their child is being treated for cancer?

I truly hate Saint Jude's but that's primarily because I find there solicitation insanely obnoxious and pushy.

Oddly enough my take away from his article Maybe exactly what the author was hoping for.

Donate to your local cancer charity and local cancer hospital.

I read they provide free facilities for one adult with a child. More than one adult would have to find their own accommodations.

The reality is families may have lost income to care for a child and be a hardship to a family financially.

Considering they care for so many people I'm sure it's not too hard to find stories that reflect the negativity the hate filled "cancel culture" goes looking for today.

This is a smear campaign against an organization that has done good things saving lives and doing research.

I mean, I hate to side with the bleeding hearts since their expectations once again are absurd. However, the fact they tout their services and make it seem like no family ever goes through hardships if St. Jude is helping them is pretty absurd as well. If their reputation is based on their statements of supporting families and really emphasizing the monetary nature of their giving by ensuring families never have to worry about money, they are leaving themselves too open for interpretation and should be forced to change their public persona. Or, you know, actually do more if that's what their business is based on.

However, this article should NOT ever make someone believe St. Jude is bad. The amount of money and effort they provide to cancer patients and research is phenomenal. When comparing their top executive's salaries and other compensation to other billion dollar companies, they even have a good ratio there.

St Jude Hospital has spent millions on cancer research for children. They are one of the few non profits that has stayed true to their mission established by Comedian Danny Thomas. Is all this research free? Of course not. It takes huge money to run their operation, don't be trashing a great institution unless you have concrete proof of wrong doing.

St. Jude may be one of the best, but they still stash away cash like Scrooge McDuck.

Vis,

"St. Jude may be one of the best, but they still stash away cash like Scrooge McDuck."

What do you think they should do?

Spend all their money and borrow like their government and most people?

Smart organizations DO save and are prepared for financial droughts.

GTJR doesn't know the difference between 'hoarding money' and 'spending money.'

Duly noted.

Shouldn't there be some limit on the ratio of tax exempt assets to charitable spending?

#12 | Posted by visitor_ at 2021-11-12 06:27 PM | Reply

Some kind of a "No Standing Charities" clause in the Constitution, perhaps?

My last gig the charitable foundation that paid the bills was sufficiently capitalized to sustain the current level of operations indefinitely.
Apparently you don't think that should be allowed? I'm wondering what you think is broken there.

I think there are people who can't see the good in anything except maybe when they find their baggy has no seeds and full of fat buds.

Note whatever, St Jude Hospital spends huge amounts of money on cancer research for children. Apparently you are clueless to what it costs, I hope the day does not come where you find out how expensive a cancer diagnosis is, you should be ashamed for trying to diss such a fine devoted institution.

My mother in law died from cancer and it was very difficult, very expensive, and a stress on our family. I am an avid supporter of St Jude Hospital, no child should have to suffer from cancer. I pray that someday St Jude and other hospitals are able to collaborate to beat this horrific disease.

As for smart asses like you, best keep your mouth shut.

"I hope the day does not come where you find out how expensive a cancer diagnosis is"

Strange then that you don't hope for single payer.
In single payer, nobody ever has to find that out.

National Health Care...it is fine if people want to contribute to a private institution, but really, the people who really need help in the US often cannot get it. We need the same system as all the other developed nations have.

This is the whiniest most disingenuous piece of trash ever put to words. The children being treated are having their treatment covered without copays, plane tickets for one of the parents and the sick child, and a free hotel room to get their treatment.

But Zomg! There are other expenses they don't cover!

Are you effing kidding me? It'sa great hospital with a great mission that saves its facilities tens of thousands of dollars if not more. Whining about what they do is the greediest nonsense I've ever heard.

Yes, because completely free cancer care and room/board for one parent is not enough.
Clearly, this organization must be targeted for criticism.

And airfare for two and a stipend of $50 bucks a day for food ... ..

CLEARLY they are evil bloodsuckers and need to be targeted with the full weight of this "news" organizations ire.

Absolute d-baggery at its finest.

One of the best parts of being a Fed during the holidays is giving money to charities and helping out the less fortunate. To facilitate this, the Combined Federal Charity Campaign every year publishes a booklet for Feds to peruse listing hundreds (at least) if not over a thousand different charities to potentially contribute to...(here's the ringer)...the best part is this book is exquisitely detailed on the percentages that each charity actually pays towards what they say they are trying to help, and what percentage actually goes to the managment and CEO's/administrators of such 'charities'. You would --- a brick if you knew how many charities are little more than ponzi schemes to funnel a large % of the donations to a small group of 'administrators' at the top. They really need to make this information available somewhere to the entire U.S. public...

About the only thing worthy of note in the article is that there are other cancer charities including children's hospitals that specialize in cancer and they are likely local compared to St Jude's.
