President Vladimir Putin said Russia has succeeded in raising the specter of a threat over Ukraine and must keep the U.S. and its allies on edge, sending a defiant signal as the West tries to push him to back down.

..."Our recent warnings have been noticed and had an effect. A certain tension has appeared there," Putin said in a speech to diplomats at the Foreign Ministry Thursday. "We need for this condition to remain as long as possible, so nobody gets it into their head to cause a conflict we don't need on our western borders."

The U.S. has in recent weeks warned its European allies that Russia may be planning a repeat of its 2014 invasion of Ukraine, citing a fresh buildup of tanks and troops on the border. The Kremlin denies any aggressive intentions. "We don't need conflicts," Putin said.

The sudden escalation in tensions surrounding Ukraine comes as Russia has clashed with Europe over energy supplies and migrants trying to enter the European Union from Belarus, Russia's closest ally.

Red Lines'

Accusing the U.S. and its allies of failing to take Russia's "red lines" seriously, Putin said Russia needs to get "serious, long-term security guarantees in this direction."...

Does what Pres Putin says for public consumption have any real meaning? Or is it more of a deflection from his true intents?

His true intent is diametrically opposed to whatever he says. He thrives on conflicts, and needs them to remain relevant.

Much like his disciple Donald.

An interesting view..

Opinion: NATO-Russia rift is next level in Putin's escalation (October 19, 2021)
www.dw.com

...In a mocking tone that has become a trademark of sorts for the Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov suggested that "if urgent matters arise" the alliance should contact Moscow's embassy in Brussels, which deals exclusively with bilateral ties between Russia and Belgium.

If normal relations between the alliance and Russia actually existed, one presumes there would be a host of "urgent matters" to address: Afghanistan; tensions in the Indo-Pacific region; terrorism; global migration challenges.

Although no one has officially abrogated the NATO-Russia Founding Act of 1997, ever since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in 2014 relations between Moscow and the alliance have been in a deep freeze.

For Russian President Vladimir Putin, this break is a logical step. Not only because, as always, he is afraid to appear "weak." In a 2020 referendum widely perceived as rigged, Putin ensured that he can stay in the Kremlin until 2036, effectively making him president for life.
A new deep freeze

Since then he has embraced a new stage in the new cold war he is waging against the West, of which NATO is the ultimate symbol. In undermining, if not destroying, the unity of the trans-Atlantic community he sees not only a security guarantee for the regime he built in Russia but his future legacy....

"he has embraced a new stage in the new cold war he is waging against the West, of which NATO is the ultimate symbol."

Another thing he and the America First crowd have in common; hating NATO and the UN.

I like the UN. NATO is obsolete. The Warsaw pact has been gone for 30 years. All NATO is now is a long fuse to world war. An entangling alliance that gives no benefit to the US but renders us liable if war breaks out in Europe.

What can't the Europeans create their own defense?

Why do they need American gaurantees? NATO should have been disbanded in 1992.Another example of Bill Clinton's bad policies. What a Sh**ty president.
