Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, November 19, 2021

Earlier this month, we received promising news that Pfizer has developed an antiviral pill for people infected by COVID-19 that may dramatically reduce the risk of hospitalizations and death.

While this antiviral pill still requires a full review by the Food and Drug Administration, I have taken immediate steps to secure enough supply for the American people. Today, I'm announcing that we have purchased 10 million treatment courses of the Pfizer antiviral COVID-19 pill, with delivery starting at the end of this year and across 2022. My administration is making the necessary preparations now to ensure these treatments will be easily accessible and free.

"Paxlovid. I usually find medication names stupid or annoying. In this case however the name is clearly derived from "Pax" which is Latin for peace and the word "love" which is in plain English the name of something I hope we all know a bit about. "

Clarely? The name could be from Paxil, a drug used to treat depression and other mental disorders and "ovid" from covid.

Regardless the etymology of the name, I agree that Biden is doing a lot better job managing the pandemic than Trump did.

It's completely obvious now that with Republicans in power this plague would still be wagging us.

The frightening thing is that the GOP sided with the disease, an implacable enemy of the United States. If they would do that, they would do anything.

Do you not realize the pandemic is world wide? Millions of people around the world got sick and died because Democrats somehow "planned" them to?

The pandemic took a congressman-elect and the GOP never said the Dems were to blame.

"The frightening thing is that the GOP sided with the disease, an implacable enemy of the United States. If they would do that, they would do anything."

The frightening thing is you twist everything the other side does so that it looks negative in order to appease your own ego. The other side sided with freedoms. You don't have to agree with them and they don't have to agree with you on how to react to the pandemic, but twisting the reactions by the other side to make them not true and negative just makes you a HUGE part of why America is where it is today. One could easily say "Dems sided with taking away Constitutional freedoms" and be just as right (and just as wrong) as you. But that kind of rhetoric doesn't actually move things forward. So why do it?

Also, which is it? Is the pandemic destroying our nation like Dem media outlets claim every day because of anti-vaxxers/anti-maskers which are causing the numbers to climb every day or is Biden ending the pandemic? It logically can't be both. Considering the numbers have proven that masks and vaccs have little effect on infection numbers today (which is different than last year when the numbers proved the mask/vaccs worked), I'd say Libs are continuing to just make up rhetoric to garner votes and not actually to solve anything. Things change and require different strategies...you would think a party known as Progressive who constantly tell America that things change and we have to keep up would understand this concept.

Twist? A cup of Kool-Aid is waiting for you in Jonestown.

Did the GOP not side with the disease? Don't wear masks. Vaccine mandates are bad. etc. That is the right wing talking points on it. As of today masks + vaccine is the most effective way to combat the disease. Studies are coming out showing that "natural immunity" in many people is greatly diminished after 3 months vs vaccines and 6 months. The disease is mutating because so many people are getting it after they refused vaccination. I mean look no further than red states. This is the most deadly and damaging pandemic we have faced in many decades. It is no Smallpox or Polio. It isn't even a Spanish flu. In some ways it is more forgiving (deaths) but in others it is much worse (echoing wave after wave, high occurrence rate of permanent or long term disabilities, driving people out of medicine exacerbating issues there, etc.)

Agreeing on how to react to a pandemic should be left to science not Facebook and Twitter feeds. Mask effing work. Christ Almighty! Why do you think they wear them in surgery and have for over 100 years? A mask protects those around you from YOU. It isn't just the "Dem" media claiming it is destroying our nation. The Red media is too - just differently. Bemoaning the lack of workers and such. What a moron. There have been labor shortages for at least 4 years. Guess who cut immigration? Fully documented and not so documented? You can't lose nearly 800k People (even if half were no longer in the job pool) to death and a few times that in early retirees in a tight labor market and not have more shortages. You can't consistently have 5-10% of a work force out of work because they have COVID and not have labor shortages. You can't consistently have thousands of peoples in hospitals for weeks at a time without causing labor shortages. People like you who I work with are still moaning about excess unemployment benefits of $600/week - that was over before Trump left. The ones that replaced that were half and they were done months ago. Red states who didn't offer them took massive hits and no increased job activity like the GOP proclaimed would happen. Half of this country has preexisting conditions that make them "more" vulnerable to a severe case of COVID - that is keeping people at home too. A lack of day care or huge prices have also taken a lot of people out. So labor rates are surging but inflation seems to be surging as well.

After all that if you don't think the pandemic is destroying not only the USA but the world there is no hope for you.

Masks have proven more effective than all the quack medicine morons are promoting.

We need to keep researching other methods of treatment of course.

I'm noting going to be satisfied till we reprogram the rna to the point it's not only harmless but contains the message "Made in China but made a B@@@@ in America."

Mask Effectiveness against Delta: 2021 Study in North Carolina Schools

Of course the study from North Carolina that came out from last year found it was Amazingly effective - to the point it rivaled the Pfizer and Moderna INITIAL effectiveness.

"If WWII happened today, the Brits would probably be f*&^ed."

100%.

The narrative would be that if one life could be saved or extended, it must. No matter the cost.

The fall of the British Empire, large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States would be a small price to pay if it meant preventing that next COVID case.

Rivalled vaccines?

Are you making this up?

I mean, I'm intrigued. I'm a numbers guy, so having something quantifiable is what matters.

What I would like to see is a comparison between infection rates between masked and unmasked in a given environment. Not so much for COVID, but to help shape policy whenever COVID 2.0 comes around.

Excellent post

With 40% of America unvaccinated and a hundred million with waning immunity, this pandemic isn't ending anytime soon.

When unvaccinated people ask for the new Pfizer pil to save their asses - trusting science only after they get sick - they should be denied and told, "sorry, they're going to vaccinated people with waning immunity who caught COVID thanks to people like you."

This would carry more weight if you supported single payer.

Denying care just for different reasons isn't really a compelling argument.

From the article:

"Achan said this may suggest that past infection with malaria could "blunt" the tendency of people's immune systems to go into overdrive when they are infected with COVID-19."

There is a theory that by treating so much disease, our immune system runs out of things to do and ends up attacking our own body. Rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, and so on.

But we aren't going to go live in a hut like Africa does.

We know enough to make some educated guesses, sensible inferences. Which are in the article.

If I had to guess, I'd say another reason is tourists and business travelers don't swarm Africa like they do JFK airport.

ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE.
Although not Biden's fault at all, stupid anti-vaxxers/Trumpers have decided that any decline in the Covid pandemic here in America might signal a victory for Biden, so they would rather sicken or kill themselves and others in order to own the libs.

The USA has seen an increase in cases for the last eight days or so. Mask-wearing is not increasing but decreasing. Vaccine refusal has held steady. The pandemic is so not over.
