Octopuses, crabs and lobsters are capable of experiencing pain or suffering, according to a review commissioned by the UK government, which has added the creatures to a list of sentient beings to be given protection under new animal welfare laws.

I mean, how moronic must one be to think that animals can't feel some sort of pain as they're boiled alive?

I remember seeing somebody get kicked off of a cooking show, Master Chef I think, for putting a lobster straight in boiling water instead of.. mercifully? stabbing it through the face with a kitchen knife before going into the water.

Then I saw at least one of the hosts put the lobster directly in the water without killing it in a Youtube clip.

We cannot eliminate pain and suffering in life, but we always should seek to minimize it as much as reasonably possible

Do lobsters have a sense of self?
I think that is a better measure of consciousness.

Umm sorry. They are way too tasty. So good luck with all that.

If they were big enough and strong enough they would definitely eat you.

Just saying.

How is this even controversial? Obviously they can feel pain and suffering. The whole belief otherwise was self serving crap. Kind of like how animals in general were beloved to have no souls or ability to understand death.

Elephants fondle the bones of their dead. Many animals obviously understand mortality.

It just a way to kill them without guilt or reflection by the people doing it.

You do not have to boil them:

Microwave: Place lobster in a heavy duty, microwave-safe plastic bag with 1 tablespoon water. Seal the bag. Microwave 6 minutes for the first pound, plus 1 minute for every additional 1/4 pound.

Just as tasty ; )

Lobster contains practically zero nutrition. The Native Americans wouldn't eat them. And they were once far more plentiful. Lobsters were ground up for fertilizer or animal feed.

Especially when they are literally screaming in pain.

"It just a way to kill them without guilt or reflection by the people doing it."

And this extends to calling your political opponents subhuman, vermin, rabid animals etc. Comments we have seen repeatedly with respect to Rittenhouse.
Dehumanizing things makes it easier for killers to kill them.

In WWI they started rifle training for doughboys against human-shaped dummy targets. That struck too close to home for some. So they switched to bullseye targets.

What does it say about humanity that reportedly Adolph Hitler use to worry about the pain lobsters suffered when boiled alive?

#11 The same thing happens in the movies. When the bad guy blows up a hundred people that's one thing. But when he shoots someone's dog, that's when he really crosses the line.

Police love to shoot dogs in America. This dog was wagging his tail and greeting people when the police killed it. www.msn.com

Christians sacrifice their God on a cross yet are squeamish about cooking a lobster to eat?

America. What a culture.

Sounds like a terrible 1st world problem.

We should throw a few billion dollars at it and see what happens.

F all that affordable accessible healthcare for humans.

The Marines have coursened your sense of empathy.
Something as simple as killing the damn lobster before boiling it is too much?

I hope you're better than that. Cruelty even to invertebrates is still cruelty and the answer here is so simple and not difficult at all.

You just look like a p*nis on this issue.

I'm far from a vegetarian. That being said, boiling an animal alive is cruel. Especially when you consider that there are logistically and economically feasible alternatives.

There was a period of popular scientific thought which posited that insects and most fish were akin to robots - acting purely on reflexes of various environmental inputs. The study of consciousness in animals of all families is interesting and changing that perspective.

Octopus is the one that really gets me. Those strange little aliens really are intelligent.

Crab on the other hand, wouldn't taste so yummy if it didn't want to be eaten.

Nobody's saying not to eat them. They're saying not to boil then alive.

Its nutrition facts are comparable to chicken.
