Bill Schneider: The party is now in the process of carrying out purges of heretics who do not worship Trump or accept all the tenets of MAGA. Conformity is enforced by social media, a relatively new institution with the power to marshal populist energy against critics and opponents.

"What's happening on the right in American politics is not exactly new. To understand it, you need to read a book published 50 years ago by Seymour Martin Lipset and Earl Raab, "The Politics of Unreason: Right-Wing Extremism in America, 1790-1970."

Right-wing extremism, now embodied in Trump's MAGA movement, dates back to the earliest days of the country.

The title of Lipset and Raab's book was chosen carefully. Right-wing extremism is not about the rational calculation of interests. It's about irrational impulses, which the authors identify as "status frustrations."

They write that "the political movements which have successfully appealed to status resentments have been irrational in character. [The movements] focus on attacking a scapegoat, which conveniently symbolizes the threat perceived by their supporters."

The most common scapegoats have been minority ethnic or religious groups. In the 19th century, that meant Catholics, immigrants and even Freemasons. The Anti-Masonic Party, the Know Nothing Party and later the American Protective Association were major political forces.

In the 20th century, the U.S. experienced waves of anti-immigrant sentiment. After World War II, anti-communism became the driving force behind McCarthyism in the 1950s and the Goldwater movement in the early 1960s ("Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice").

The roots of the current right-wing extremism lie in the late 1960s and 1970s, when Americans began to be polarized over values (race, ethnicity, sex, military intervention). Conflicts of interest (such as business versus labor) can be negotiated and compromised. Conflicts of values cannot."

If discrimination is creating equity, then it is antiracist.
If discrimination is creating inequity, then it is racist.

Is pretty easy to figure out who the racist/fascist are, they want charter schools, national security, student testing, closed borders, and COVID mandates/lockdowns, controlled mass media, obsessed with crime and punishment, fraudulent elections.

There's a reason Trump did so well by spreading xenophobia and hate.

He nurtured the racism festering in conservatives and brought it to a rapid boil.

I can see why they frame it this way. Going back just a single generation (and a half maybe) is how it's framed to make it seem more scary.

The real truth is that the polarization over values goes back to at least 1776.

Racism and polarization in politics has been a constant throughout the entire existence of this country.

When have we not been polarized over race, ethnicity, and sex? Hell, even military intervention has been a huge issue in the past going way back before the 60s and 70s.

I get the GOP is catering to a group of extreme beliefs. But until really not all that long ago, blacks, women, gays, etc....all massively marginalized by our society and government.

We used to outright lynch blacks in open daylight with no consequences for the sin of daring to whistle at a white woman. But we are going to argue that Americans just began to be polarized over values SINCE stuff like that happened?

You're right Eberly.

I'd argue present day America is amongst the most diverse, accepting, progressive nations on the planet. It's an incredible nation.

It has grown considerably since the days when people would take their families for a picnic in the park, to watch a lynching.

But. To use your own words, "until really not all that long ago, blacks, women, gays, etc....all massively marginalized by our society and government."

The worry is that our nation is backsliding due to the fact that, "the GOP is catering to a group of extreme beliefs."

#14 | Posted by ClownShack at 2021-11-29 06:17 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 2

From the article:

The Democratic Party today is defined by its commitment to diversity and inclusion.

But it's not and that's a problem for them. In fact it's THE problem for them.

"until really not all that long ago, blacks, women, gays, etc....all massively marginalized by our society and government."

And the Democrats solution is to marginalize white men to make things even, and that's where Trump is getting the bulk of his base.

#12 | POSTED BY EBERLY

Not me.

But since Trumpy and trumpism that polarization has definitely gotten worse, not better.

Reconciliation after the civil war failed miserably. We have never reconciled anything. Only put little bandaids over a big gaping sore.

But while we have been moving toward true equality ever since it's been in fits and starts. Depending on how good a leader we have in the White House. And for the last 4-5 years we are actually going backwards. In some mistaken belief that we need to make America "great again". Like it was before the civil war I imagine.

It was a Lost Cause then and it is a Lost Cause now and it's keeping American from fulfilling its creed.

Jan 6th is a glaring example of the open wound in America's consciousness. One that has been with us since the civil war.

Trump did nothing to heal that wound instead picked at the scab until the blood flowed again.

Congratulations Republicans. You and your lies and conspiracy theories built that. Congratulations Democrats. For not fighting back hard enough against the undermining of our democratic norms, institutions and ideals.

Sorry, but I find this statement to be a load of hooie...

White men first of all comprise the majority in this nation.
No matter how much they feel sorry for themselves, they are NOT
set upon. And being a white man myself, having lived amongst white
men all my life, I have witnessed time and time again how white men have
reinforced their own notions of being 'set upon' (basically any time they
don't get their way, or any time that a minority or a woman is voted into
power or challenges them). I have also witnessed, time and time again, how
EASILY the white man is swayed, distracted, caves into litany's of hate, to
the mythology of being superior, to deserving more, to deserving the most in
society, to the belief in 'toxic masculinity' with all of its self-serving bullying
of others. No, no. The typical white male in this country is never happy unless they
are at the very top of the food chain. Only then is he satisfied. According to his
adopted mythology, it is his 'by right', forget fair competition, forget the fact
he might not know as much anymore as his competitors. Sick of it. I've watched
this for decades now. Nobody is guaranteed a 'free lunch' in America. It is a
'skill set economy'. And regardless of race, sex, whatever, if you lack the skills
that society deems worthy and worth paying for in this country--you WILL fall behind!

So stop whining. Stop feeling sorry for yourselves, go back to school, go back and get
retrained, and get the skillsets you need to succeed! And to say the Dems have alienated you?!!
Really?! The same democratic party that has for years tried to defend unions and the right of
the working man to organize and protect what little rights they had?! You don't know ----- about
what you are talking about. You want to be mad, because technology and society has passed your
blue collar job right on by? Fine, I understand that! But instead of blaming those who are
really causing you grief (the white CEO that shipped your job out to China, or Mexico, or some
cheaper worker market) you follow the easy path of blaming women and minorities, and other workers
(like yourself in skills, but different from you in ethnicity) because you WANT to believe in your
own superiority. But to blame the democrats, those who have fought for worker rights, whilst the GOP
has fought 'tooth and nail' against worker rights, is foolish. To blame minorities, who are just trying
to make a living like you are, is foolish. Focus your anger in the right areas, in the right direction,
and work at bettering yourself and your own skillset, THAT is the only way to change the paradigm, and
the situation that has made you unhappy. I've said my piece. Do with it, what you will...

I agree with you but that problem is a subset of a larger problem where someone is blaming their lot in life on any political party. That fool is just as wrong as the white man blaming democrats.

I know a lot of people. I'm extremely present in my community and my industry. I know folks who are hard core republicans and can't stand democrats no matter what....but I've never heard them blame their lot in life on democrats.

I've seen business owners blame their business challenges on democrats (taxes and regulation) with no real basis for their argument. Rather, it's just their ideology talking instead of specific issues and how they are directly impacting their business.

This whole "I'm white so I'm deserving of more" attitude....is that a Southern thing?

Not everyone can be a neurosurgeon. The world needs burger flippers, delivery people and taxicab drivers. However less and less people want to work an entire hour to afford a gallon of milk which is the end result of holding the minimum wage and then demanding government cut food and health benefits to poverty level workers.

W thought it was the best thing in the world that a woman was telling him she had to work THREE jobs to survive. He called it uniquely American. The dumb --- didn't understand that the woman was not bragging about how great it was, she was complaining to him about how hard it is to survive at the lower end.

For every Mitt Romney, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates or Warren Buffet who leveraged their families wealth and connections into a successful business there are hundreds of thousands of people who will work hard all their lives and barely survive.

Overall the world is becoming more free! Hence those people working min wage here are competing with RoW to afford a gallon of milk, the RoW people are at an advantage given their low cost of living.

Open borders resolves this issue, by making an hour working here makes the same as an hour working there.
