Amy Howe: It has been nearly 30 years since the Supreme Court's decision in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which reaffirmed the constitutional right to abortion that the court first recognized in Roe v. Wade.

What we have is no longer just a de facto dividing up of the nation, but also increasingly de jure divisions. Right wing States will have one set of laws. Moderate States with have another set of laws.

This would have been unthinkable not even 20 years ago and could be the first real trigger towards the Balkanization of our country.

This will brand the court as being just as partisan as CONgress. A sad death for a formerly great institution.

Ya know... this feels like the generation actually born of choice isn't all that interested in keeping it in place. So be it.

Better Red than Democrat.

My understanding of Roe is that the Mississippi law is allowable.

But Roe was supplanted by Casey, and I'm not quite sure where that line is drawn.

As for the impact of this law, Republicans are determined to make lives harder for the poor, and this is just another means to that end. They don't care at all about saving babies, just punishing poor people.

never had a doubt as to this...
the SCOTUS is as partisan as I thought,
and in no way should be in charge of justice
in this country.

only way to do it, 8 justices, 4 from each side,
then let them fight it out for the majority vote.
otherwise, the case gets thrown back into the lower
courts until such a time as they agree to consider it
again.

This is what happens when the dems focus on infrastructure while republicans are focused on seizing power and ending democracy.

Dems first act should have been defending america from fascism and republican cheating by passing the voting rights act, adding new states, and re balancing the supreme court that now represents a minority of the country.

Instead dems spent their time approving bridge funding. As if that will make the fascist regain their sanity and embrace democracy again.

"This is what happens when the dems focus on infrastructure while republicans are focused on seizing power and ending democracy."

We wouldn't want them to seize a country with shoddy infrastructure!

There would be questions, like "why did you seize a --------- country, exactly?"

Both Parties Are The Same.

Majority of Court Appears Poised to Roll Back Abortion Rights

How can this be? We were told repeatedly in 2016 that there was NO difference between the two parties? Uh-huh. If Hillary had become president, this would not be happening. Capisce?

First act starting when? When Biden was elected?

Since then, none of that was remotely possible except for maybe the voting rights act. The rest of it had and has no chance.

Banning abortion had no chance once upon a time. But your cult has shown what is possible when you're obsessed.

Manchin's not the biggest problem. The problem is delusional status quo dems are going about business as usual as if republicans aren't trying to replace democracy with fascism and foster a domestic terrorist insurrection.

That's probably because they don't believe that's what being attempted, yourcult.

I'm not saying they're right or wrong....just suggesting a possible reason for their inaction.

Nothing in that list is technically fantasy and all of it is legally possible.

Fantasy is choosing a spoiled rich sociopathic narcissist who's never worked a day in his life and had everything handed to him to be the champion of the people.

Which is why i was complaining about them stupid. Maybe if you weren't so eager to attack me you'd have realized that.

It's moderate status quo delusional dems fault that they're not fighting back against the fascist insurrection more aggressively.

It's your cult's fault that there's a fascist insurrection in the first place.

"Instead dems spent their time approving bridge funding. As if that will make the fascist regain their sanity and embrace democracy again."

I blame both the moderate and progressive Dems for fighting over the infrastructure bill and the BBB plan instead of quickly compromising and passing both, then moving on to protecting voting rights and preventing another insurrection. Dems across the political spectrum seem to be under the illusion/delusion that good policy alone is going to win them seats in 2022.

Stacy is more optimistic than I am:

U.S. Congress will pass voting rights bills, Stacey Abrams says

"I remain very bullish on the possibility of us getting these bills passed," she said. "But that means we have to keep talking about it. And we have to keep amplifying the real effects of these laws."

You're emblematic of the moral failure of "sensible" Republicans.

Just like Republican Senator Susan "Eberly" Collins.

Though perhaps Republican Information Minister Tariq "Eberly" Aziz is a more apt appellation.

Thanks for reading and understanding that it's about what your party is doing to your country.

This will have a cascade effect, next up will be birth control, mixed marriage, gay marriage, segregation in schools, the rights of minorities and women to vote, the GQP and these fascists on SCOTUS won't be happy until we are back in 1950.

Best thing that could come out of this Is that 60% support legal abortion so hopefully they vote with this in mind in 22/24.
Also looks like prescident doesn't matter anymore..the rightwingers are going to push the limits...

I would hate to see Roe v Wade eliminated or rolled back, however, some people need to get the government they vote for. They need to stop voting for republicans and hoping democrats win.

"Dems first act should have been defending america from fascism and republican cheating by passing the voting rights act, adding new states, and re balancing the supreme court that now represents a minority of the country."

If you have a problem with it now, why weren't Dems yelling from the rooftops about this every. single. time. they have a majority in the SCOTUS? Never hear any talk from Dems about the SCOTUS representing a minority of the country when they are in power. Considering the country is split down the middle, that's very big context to ignore. The truth comes out because of your logic, not in forsaking your logic. Your partisan points that have no bearing in reality mean nothing but hate. In fact, the Dem party were just arguing to expand the SCOTUS SPECIFICALLY because they wanted a majority. I mean, your own party is providing clear evidence that contradicts your logic and you still won't take a hint.

How about this, let's make a deal. When Dems have SCOTUS majority again, let's see how much the Dem party talks about changing things in the Judicial branch. If it is still a topic that is discussed as a priority like today, I'll concede my point. If the topic dies, my point is factual, based in reality and cannot be denied.

The country is not "split down the middle"

A cheating minority has rigged the system to stay in power and breaks the system when they aren't.

Over the last 30 years, Republicans have only won the nationwide popular vote in one(1) Presidential election. Five of the six currently sitting Republican justices were appointed by a President who lost the popular vote, and three of them were appointed by someone who tried to overthrow the United States Government.

---- off. Nobody likes Republicans. Without rigging you'd never have anything.
