Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, December 05, 2021

Bob Dole, the longtime lawmaker who overcame life-threatening injuries during World War II to become a shepherd of the Republican Party, died in his sleep at the age of 98. Dole's death was confirmed by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation in a statement Sunday. "It is with heavy hearts we announce that Senator Robert Joseph Dole died early this morning in his sleep," the foundation said. "At his death, at age 98, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 79 years." In February, Dole revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and said he was starting treatment. A former Senate majority leader and the 1996 Republican nominee for president, the native of Russell, Kansas, championed everything from reforming the federal food stamp program to bringing awareness to disabilities.

I loved impersonations of Bob Dole where he referred to himself in the third person. It makes me imagine his last words as "Bob Dole is dead."

There can't be many World War II veterans left who served in national politics.

One of the many reasons we used to vote Republican, and for 30 years. Dimwit 43/Iraq and the "teaparty" end it for us. Rest in peace Senator-you worked hard for the poeple.

I thought he died years ago.He has no relevance to today's ways and trends. A dinosaur. No more repukes like that now. They have moved on to a "better way" .

Trump.

Bob Dole couldn't even Win a primary today. Matt Gaetz, Boebert, and MTG are the new face of the repukes. Bob Dole was a politician. These new types are criminals.

People who bleed for their country are no longer often admired by the Right. I think that the existence of such people has come to shame them, and that frankly they wish they all would die.

It shouldn't surprise you at all. The anti-patriotic thing began at least by 2000 and Republicans have only gotten much, much worse.

Dole being a RINO. That's all that's important about him to the modern GOP.

Blue dogs running for president would do about as well as liberal Republicans. They'd never win the primary because nobody wants their party to nominate a fence sitter.

I'll talk trash tomorrow.

Today I'm going to remember Senator Dole as a combat veteran, statesman, and low key intellectual with a dry sense of humor.

I'm also always going to remember when Dole, Clinton, and Perot had a three way debate and I noticed all three were lefties.

RIP Sir.

We lost two hero's from WWII over the weekend. First it was Edward Shames, that last survivor of the so-called 'Band of Brothers'. He was 99 years old. And then today, we hear of the death of Bob Dole, who was severely wounded during WWII fighting the Germans in Europe. He was 98.

Yes, Dole had to use his left hand, but it was NOT by choice. He lost the use of right arm and hand as a result of injuries he sustained in August 1945 fighting the Germans in Belgium.

Republicans have actively been trying and lately succeeding in restricting abortion as long as you've been alive.

You're saying the Republican "compromise" on abortion would be to accept the legal status quo of Roe and Casey, and stop trying to overturn them?
That's not a compromise.

Although there were times I hoped he'd get the use of that arm back just so he'd stop going on about it, the guy wasn't a nutter. Neither he nor Goldwater would stand a chance of surviving in today's incarnation of the party they actually gave a dam about.

""Bob was an American statesman like few in our history. A war hero and among the greatest of the Greatest Generation. And to me, he was also a friend whom I could look to for trusted guidance, or a humorous line at just the right moment to settle frayed nerves," Biden said. "I will miss my friend. But I am grateful for the times we shared, and for the friendship Jill and I and our family have built with Liddy and the entire Dole family."

Joe Biden

What class. Unlike Trump's treatment of a senior and highly respected member of his own party, Sen. John McCain after he died.

#48 | Posted by jakester at 2021-12-06 12:26 AM | Reply

Bob Dole was a real American. The kind we need more of. Disabled Americans all over owe him a debt of gratitude. Bob Dole actually understood why we need good affordable health care and was not afraid to compromise to get it.

Trump would have attacked him and attempted to destroy him if he had so much as opened his mouth in opposition to what Trumpy was doing to the Grand Old Party and America.

We need more Bob Dole's and less hateful insurrectionists like Boaz in this country.

I can't even believe Bozo showed up on this thread. He is only here to spread more hate. Bob Dole was definitely not about hate.

Because obviously insurrectionists would have nothing to do with real Americans like Bob Dole or his philosophy of compromise when he was alive.

He celebrated the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. And it was Democratic senators he credited.

Bob Dole was very loyal to his party. Unfortunately Bob Dole endorsed Trumpy for president but would today's insurrectionists even consider him Republican? Not likely.

(he was the only one of the five living previous GOP presidential nominees to endorse Donald Trump.)

Sadly, it seems very apt and timely that a gentleman true conservative political leader would die as we ooze our way through the high tide of rightwing ---- such as Trump, Gosar, Gaetz, Boebert, Taylor-Green and so many more. Dole stood for something at a time when the GOP still had principles worth standing for. All that is gone now.

Sadly, I will be anticipating the massive show of respect on the DR when Mr. Carter passes away (assuming he doesn't just directly ascend to heaven at age 125).

I'm sure all the Trumpers will be as respectful towards him and nearly all Libruls are towards Dole.

I'm sure of it
