Suffering from debilitating exhaustion and pain for months, patients find themselves on food stamps and Medicaid.

Across America, many of the nearly 50 million people infected with the coronavirus continue to suffer from some persistent symptoms, with a smaller subset experiencing such unbearable fatigue and other maladies that they can't work, forcing them to drop out of the workforce, abandon careers and rack up huge debts.

Hard data is not available and estimates vary widely, but based on published studies and their own experience treating patients, several medical specialists said 750,000 to 1.3 million patients likely remain so sick for extended periods that they can't return to the workforce full time.

Long covid is testing not just the medical system, but also government safety nets that are not well suited to identifying and supporting people with a newly emerging chronic disease that has no established diagnostic or treatment plan. Insurers are denying coverage for some tests, the public disability system is hesitant to approve many claims, and even people with long-term disability insurance say they are struggling to get benefits.

Employers are also being tested, as they must balance their desire to get workers back on the job full time with the realities of a slow recovery for many patients.

"They are suffering in dramatic ways, and in ways that have altered their lives and placed them in financial peril," said Harlan Krumholz, a cardiologist and scientist at Yale University and Yale New Haven Hospital.

I don't personally know any Democrats who've contracted COVID. Why? Because they followed scientific advice, masking everywhere and vaxxing when they were available.

Alternately, I personally knew several right wingers who've died, and know several more of them who have long haul COVID because they wouldn't do simple things like wearing masks, or getting vaccinated when they came out.

One of their stories was told right here on DR. He was on FB every day saying, "It's a hoax to bring down Trump!" and "I'm not wearing a g-damned mask!" when they were mandated in public here in Nashville.

He died last year after 5 weeks on a ventilator. Now, his wife is having to sell their house and their pubescent kid has no father because of his late father's stupidity.

I'm trying to think of anybody I know who's suffered from long COVID. If there are 1+ million with it....I have to know some.

I can't think of anybody not working because of it. I'm sure it's a reality though.

www.kcra.com

This was a reality once the checks starting get distributed....I'm still amazed and how many toys people went out and bought.

Of course now we'll be seeing stories about how financially ruined they are over COVID. I'm sure many are.....but some were just outright --------- who pissed away all the free money they got.

I've seen a few of these COVID stories evolve similarly the past couple of years:

- "It's a hoax"
- "No one is going to tell ME what to do!"
- "Please pray for XXXX who's in the hospital with COVID
- "Please donate to our GoFundMe for XXXX's medical/funeral expenses"

There is an entire subreddit devoted to these happy endings called the HermanCainAward.

One word Armodafinil.

As someone who has extreme fatigue not related to Covid that saved my income potential. I was sleeping 12+ hours a day and still so drained I couldn't do crap, the fatigue made all my other issues worse. Got on Armodafinil and now a 12 hour work day is not uncommon.

Start throwing drugs at it, that's the American way.

I can attest to long Covid.

My wife got covid before it was named... Nov/Dec19

Hit her lungs hard, and she put on more then 50lbs water weight below the waist. Pretty sure the only thing that saved her is she owns a crossfit gym and is strong AF, especially her cardio.

She is still feeling the effects. After a full day of coaching she has to put on air bag leg squeezers hyperice.com so she can have ankles again. She is also basically unable to complete and CF WOD without major modification now.

I've seen it first hand, long covid is no joke.

Sorry to hear about that. Wishing her a full recovery!

The people I know with long COVID are experiencing a weird mix of symptoms from muscle wasting to sleep-all-day fatigue. One, a formerly healthy dude, got congestive heart disease after his COVID infection.

Greatly appreciated AU.

Oddly enough, she's a breakthrough case as of yesterday... She has it again. So far very light in comparison.... must be the Omicron?
