I have problems with Religious "leaders" in general but this man is an abysmal excuse for the head of the Orthodox Church. I have actually followed this man more than a bit. He and his predecessor were both KGB informants and have sought to limit other religions growth by The Russian Orthodox Church is the head of the Orthodox Church overall. Many countries are primarily Orthodox. I can go on and on about the role of the Orthodox church in propping up the USSR and much of the Eastern Bloc. They were all complicit with the dictatorships to say the least. The exceptions being the Greek branch because Greece wasn't a member of the Bloc... Things changed in most countries after the fall of the USSR. Apparently not the USSR.

Well, at least Patriarch Kirill leads a relatively humble lifestyle with watches that only cost $30K and a $4 million yacht.

Pretty good example of why The Founders were adamant on separation of Church and State.

Pretty good example of why Republicans have been trying to claim America as a Christian nation for the past fifty years.

Putin's war is first and foremost a religious crusade.

Fascism manifests the same ways in every culture around the world.

Conservatives are always the ones who drag their countries into it. Always in the name of god or nationalism or racial supremacy.

Armies full of brainwashed men from the rightwing sides of their countries' politics. Being fed into meat grinders. Spouting propaganda about patriotism. Sometimes the fever takes over a whole country, and you get a hitler. Trump showed us it can happen anywhere.

The Church there has been subverted, along with the entire MIC and political class.

The same thing happened in Germany in the late '30's.

It is an extreme form of mob mentality, based on fear of "the other", engrained in them by their authoritarian nationalist leaders.

"In every country and every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own. It is easier to acquire wealth and power by this combination than by deserving them, and to effect this, they have perverted the purest religion ever preached to man into mystery and jargon, unintelligible to all mankind, and therefore the safer for their purposes."

And this is why as a general I am very much in favor of separating church and state.

Can?

Religion is BOUGHT and paid for since well forever.

It is a tool used to extort the stupid to get money and power.

It takes a special con artist to get a person to pay 10% of their gross income tax free for a product they won't use until they're dead.

As an atheist, I consulted my high priest of atheism, me, and I decided he is wrong. Besides, his guy, Putin, is murdering tens of thousands of Ukrainians so, while that is old testament life, supporting a murderer is to be an accomplice to that crime.

I completely disagree. Ukrainians are Orthodox. Putin's war is one of power, ego and pride.

Good point but it has been subverted for so long in Russia it isn't even funny.

Under the communists the authorities literally had a file on everyone. The priests were their number one informants. In some of these countries when it finally came out there was indeed a lot of outrage but what has been sad to watch is the people of Eastern Europe's move toward religious extremes. Conservatism and Nationalism have been on the rise for 20 or so years. I don't get there often now but about every 5 years now and honestly it is alarming the rise I have seen of it. They are going full nutter like most of the religious here. My wife doesn't want to go back now seeing how her friends have changed.

Ukraine is the birthplace of the Russian Orthodox church, Kyiv it's Jerusalem, that's why Putin wants it so badly.

Putin wrote last year: "Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians are all descendants of Ancient Rus, which was the largest state in Europe. Slavic and other tribes across the vast territory " from Ladoga, Novgorod, and Pskov to Kiev and Chernigov " were bound together by one language (which we now refer to as Old Russian), economic ties, the rule of the princes of the Rurik dynasty, and " after the baptism of Rus " the Orthodox faith. The spiritual choice made by St. Vladimir, who was both Prince of Novgorod and Grand Prince of Kiev, still largely determines our affinity today.

The throne of Kiev held a dominant position in Ancient Rus. This had been the custom since the late 9th century. The Tale of Bygone Years captured for posterity the words of Oleg the Prophet about Kiev, "Let it be the mother of all Russian cities.""

Article by Vladimir Putin "On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians"

Power, ego and pride are of course elements but he wants to "rebuild" christendom.

A government that leaves the masses in fear that priests will report them is possibly the most orwellian thing imaginable.

Reason #847,945 why I'm happy to be excommunicated from the Russian Orthodox Church.
