GOP Staffers Fired after Possible 'ballot harvesting' Operation Found

The fallout from the discovery of a potential GOP "ballot harvesting" operation in South Philadelphia continued Tuesday, as two state party staffers lost their jobs, the matter became fodder for attacks in the Republican primary for governor, and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle jockeyed to define just what the situation said -- or didn't -- about the security of voting by mail.

...But the sources who described the terminations " and spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter " said the party's decision to cut ties with the two men stemmed from an Inquirer story last week that raised questions about the PAC's work registering people in South Philadelphia to vote by mail.

The news organization found that dozens of Republican mail ballots for the May 17 primary were being diverted to a P.O. Box registered to the Republican Registration Coalition. The committee's chairman " Billy Lanzilotti, a onetime Republican ward leader in Philadelphia and former campaign staffer for U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R., Bucks " said he'd helped the voters fill out their ballot applications, inserting his P.O. box on the form where voters would typically write their home addresses.

Though Lanzilotti maintained he was doing this as a "service to the voters" and intended to hand deliver the ballots once they arrived, many of the affected voters said they did not remember applying to vote by mail and had no idea why their ballots were going to Lanzilotti instead of directly to them. One said Lanzilotti had delivered his ballot back to the city once it had been filled out " which would violate state law.

Of the top 10 mailing addresses for Philadelphia ballots, Lanzilotti's P.O. box was the only one that was not an elections office or a nursing home....

In this case it is revealing the drawbacks and opportunities to take advantage of mail-in ballots being a weak link.

I was going on and on talking about ballot harvesting being a very real problem and this article confirms it.

Are people so foolish to think this was an isolated incident or only Republicans did it?

My point from the start was not to point out fraud but to point out weaknesses in mail-in ballot processes.

Future elections are at risk if we stay this course.

They were caught as with so many other Republicans scamming the vote. This isn't the first large scale GOP mail ballot scam to be stopped. i.e. Proof the system of checks is working.

The voting in 2 states folks are the most common one voters (virtually all GOP) are busted for. The thing is there are so few cases period to be a non-issue.

Chambers of commerce. Take Kansas for example: it's widely known the illegals work in meat packing plants in the southwest and southeast parts of the State. But no raids. Why? Local sheriffs, and local chambers of commerce. In those areas, Republicans.

Also: look what happened to Georgia a few years ago when they got rid of illegals right before harvest season. Ripe fruits and vegetables rotted in the fields. They didn't repeat the policy. Were they pro immigration, or pro reality?

Why not change the rules? Bring back the bracero program. Put in place the two-card program for seasonal workers discussed 20 years ago. Most Mexicans and Central Americans coming to the U.S. don't want to immigrate, they want to come work for the season then go home and live well the rest of the year. They started staying back in the late 90s because it was getting so much harder to enter every successive year. Open up legal immigration quotas for those who do want to immigrate. My business and every other in my area is screaming for employees. There's more than one solution to the problem.

We can and it will continue like this until Congress finally reforms our immigration laws to coincide with the reality on the ground. Or until some event finally brings us together again as a nation.
