One person is dead and four more critically wounded in a shooting on Sunday at a Southern California church, authorities said. The shooting happened at Geneva Presbyterian Church in the city of Laguna Woods, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said ... Law enforcement said they detained one person and "have recovered a weapon that may be involved." A fifth injured person suffered minor injuries, according to the department. All the victims were adults.

It was not immediately clear if Geneva Presbyterian or another church was hosting a service in the building at the time. Undersheriff Jeff Hallock said many of the 30 or so people who were in the church when shots rang out were of Taiwanese descent.

The shooters in Asian men over the age of 50 who's described as not from the area.

This is almost definitely connected to mental illness.

from the LA Times: "After the shots rang out, the pastor picked up a chair and hit the gunman with it, Huang was told. Then other members of the congregation grabbed him, Huang said. She added that many members of the church have military backgrounds."

"The congregants were members of the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church, which has been holding services at Geneva for 10 years."

Looks to be politically motivated hate crime.

""This was a politically motivated hate incident, a grievance that this individual had between himself and the Taiwanese community," said Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes at a noon news conference. "It is believe the suspect was upset about political tensions between China and Taiwan.""
