Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) on Sunday warned Native American tribes not to create abortion safe havens if Roe v. Wade is overturned and his state enacts a near-total ban on abortions.

That was my thought reading this. What an impotent POS Stitt is he can do nothing. If he makes life difficult for the tribes he loses in court and there will be reparations okies will pay for.

If they can catch them in a supermarket, yes.

"Oklahomans will not think very well of that if tribes try to set up abortion clinics,"

Note that Indians are not "Oklahomans".

Governors have no jurisdiction to tell tribes what to do on their reservations.

STFU

Please Native Americans, don't kill Okies. What have they ever done to you? /s

If the tribes so chose, they could harbor abortion refugees; non-tribal and tribal women avoiding prosecution for abortions. Only the Feds could extradite such women from reservations, not the state.

Normally the tribes cooperate with state authorities, particularly involving non-tribal offenders. But they don't have to cooperate.

Stupid Republican just did a great job of alienating everyone who lives on a rez.

Don't some Casino's have in house doctors?

White Republican jerkwad threatening the Natives for something they haven't even done-how novel.

I cant name two Nations in Oklahoma I suspect have good lawyers and enough money to take on the state in court.

Nearly all gains any tribe has received over the last 100+ years in terms of their sovereignty has been through litigation. They've gotten quite saavy with the law and their rights. Tribal members go study law abroad (off-rez, lol) then come home and work for their tribal governments. They often don't expect a lot of pay, because that's not the point.

My guess is that plenty of outside folks will be happy to contribute to the cause.

Should read "can".

"Stupid Republican just did a great job of alienating everyone who lives on a rez."

That's been their policy since about 1861, so not big loss there.
Abraham Lincoln did a better job defeating Indians than he did defeating the Confederacy.
In fact, the Confederacy has defeated the Republican Party.

I'm stealing that.

Supreme Court Rules That About Half Of Oklahoma Is Native American Land - July 9, 2020.

Here's the map:

Turns out Stitt has had issues with Native Americans for quite some time:

I'm not sure Stitt has the power he thinks he has.

This could be entertaining.

It seems to me like the Native Americans have sovereignty over abortion rights, regardless of the Governor's threats.

Which makes me wonder: Does Alito have time to work something into his next draft?

Of course, I suppose the Governor could just be forced to protect the Native Americans from the Nazis among them.

#18 That Supreme Court case was pretty crazy story that didn't get much press at the time. Maybe it's big news in Oklahoma. If the hippies are right, they should be able to make the place into a utopia in a generation or two.

They don't have to take on states. Their independence stems from the supreme law of the land.

Unless RNJCOTUS is willing to ---- all over treaties.

I'm pretty sure all reservations fall under the Department of the Interior. States have zero jurisdiction - it's the same reason the natives open casinos and flip the states the bird.

Then why does the governor go out of his way to threaten Indians on behalf of "Oklahomans"?

The man's not threatening the law. He's warning about something else.

It could be the OK governor is just stupid. He is a Republican after all.

What they can or cannot do is irrelevant. It is the political theater of the threat...the bullying...the extortion. Disgusting toxic masculinity of a party that polishes Putin's knob on a world stage.

DeSanturd, Hotwheels, Sporkfoot, Honeybooboo, etc.

This joker figured he had to make some public jackassery statement to keep pace with the nimrods that get most of the press for their lunacy.

The McGurt ruling confirmed tribal sovereignty on tribal land in Ohiehomie. The tribes long ago bought up the best legal talent in the state. Governor Brownshoes is urinating into a stiff Oiehomie wind on this one, like he has on many other matters relating to the First Americans in the confines of the state's borders. I suspect that the tribes will have a problem providing medical services to white folks, but that money will help them overcome that problem...

It's almost like he's taking a page from Trump and DeSantis. Make overt, poorly considered threats toward people who can and will defeat you in court. Better yet if you actually know little to nothing about the legality of your threatened action. But you'll establish yourself as the tough guy leader of a basket of deplorable losers looking for someone to blame for their own poor choices, and get elected again and again.

#27 | Posted by El_Buscador at 2022-05-17 05:05 PM | Reply

The best thing about Gov. Brownshoes is that his poll numbers among Okiehomie voters have been dismal for a couple of years, so those in the Sooner or Later State get two chances to kick him out of office--in the primary and (if needed) in the general election...

"Oklahomans will not think very well of that if tribes try to set up abortion clinics," Stitt said, warning he is monitoring the situation.

That's fair.

And the native tribes probably still do not think very well of Oklahomans who stole their lands and stuck them in a reservation.

The tribes (and the rest of us apparently) are "monitoring the situation", too.
