...Prior to the war, Finnish public opinion was running around 50-50 on whether to join NATO or not; this rose to around three-quarters in favor, after the invasion.

Finland, once ruled by Sweden and subsequently a part of the Russian Empire until its independence in 1917, followed a policy of neutrality throughout the Cold War. Sweden is famed for having remained neutral since the Napoleonic Wars, over 200 years ago.

The newest NATO member state until now is North Macedonia, which joined in 2020, while Bosnia-Herzegovina is also going through the membership application process.

Estonia joined in 2004, along with Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Estonia's leaders heralded the announcement that Sweden would be joining as being "good for the region"....

No wonder Finland is so concerned about Pres Putin's unprovoked invasion of Ukriane. I had not known they were a part of the Russian empire in the past.

Still, Pres Erodgan's part in this needs to be kept in mind. What is he looking to get in order for Turkey to vote favorably for the Sweden and Finland to join NATO?

Putin's, and Trump's, greatest achievement.

Yes, there have been a few things that have not gone well for Pres Putin's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, starting with the disastruos attempt in the early days to attack and take over Kyiv.

But my opinion is that if Sweden and Finland do join NATO, that may be one of the more significant long-term changes to come out of Pres Putin's unprovoked invasion.

BIG IF the reports of Putin's terminal illness are true, his last dying wish, "going nuclear," is foremost on the mind of everybody in the region.

And rightfully so. Putin is a nutcase who is suffering from the loss of his grandiose ambition to restore the U.S.S.R. to its former glory and power, not to mention cementing own legacy as the greatest leader the world has ever known.

His ego (the size of Grand Canyon) just took a serious blow to the solar plexus. My guess is he'll be looking for some retaliation, if for no other reason than to restore his egomaniacal tough guy reputation before he gets de-throned in a coup.

Imagine if the UN had a provision, as NATO does, that an invasion of one is cause for all to come to its protection, and if the aggressor is in the Security Council, that country loses its veto power. Then the UN would have some real justification for existing in this dangerous world.

Putins greatest accomplishment will always be getting a Russian spy elected to the Presidency of the United States.

"Putins greatest accomplishment will always be getting a Russian spy elected to the Presidency of the United States."

Amazing how such a nefarious and ubiquitous man such as Putin could manipulate millions ofd people and scores of politicians of the most powerful country in the world into choosing a useful idiot/stooge/spy/manchurian candidate as their leader but he can't even conquer a 300 mile swath of flat land a few miles to his west.

It's like that brilliant professor on Gilligan's Island who could create all sorts of ingenious gadgets out of bamboo and palm fronds and coconut shells, but somehow didn't have the intellectual know-how to fix a simple hole in the bottom of a boat.

But hey, its summer of 1914 all over again and the momentum of the MIC cannot be stopped so OVER THE TOP, fellow lemmings!

Such sweet delicious irony. Trump hammers NATO for not keeping up their funding. Nobody really cared and just wanted him to shut up. Putin invades Ukraine, NATO members rush to pay their bills and greatly inflate defense spending.

That's not amazing. What is amazing is that the Republicans fell for it, and continue to do so.

... he can't even conquer a 300 mile swath of flat land a few miles to his west. ...

His generals lied to him about the capabilities of his military in such a war?

Precisely what I have predicted since February. Putin will be removed by firing squad just like Czar Nicholas. Putin has effectively bankrupted Russia. And he has lost thousands of young men in his stupid war. Same things Cr Nicholas did.
Even when Piyin is gone Russia wwill broke.

Russia was on the path to democracy and being a homeland for free people, but along the way the "big boys" took over and turned it into a paradise for oligarchs and other gangsters, and to achieve that, they killed democracy there and also murdered the independent media...echoes of what trump tried to do and will try to do.
Putin's war will be remembered, most likely, as the single stupidest thing a leader has done in our lifetimes.
Well, I am still alive at 75, so there is time for someone else to do the same. Putin even surpassed George W.
