Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said his earlier comments about the Uvalde shooting, in which he praised law enforcement for their response and noted that it "could have been worse," came from "inaccurate" information he was given, arguing he was "misled."

The bigger thing to think about is that the Texas Governor represents his state.

So, what he says is what the people of Texas want him to say.

Texas is the second biggest state in the Country.

Think about that.

Yes, and Abbott still plans on speaking at the NRA conference in Houston, only he's now decided to 'phone it in'. He was going to attend in-person but when he learned that there was going to be such a large crowd of protestors, he decided that the optics of him sneaking into the convention center wouldn't look good and besides, he didn't want to give any more ammunition (excuse the pun) to his Democratic opponent in this year's election, Beto O'Rourke, who'll be there revving-up the crowd.

His grandstanding lost Texas billions of dollars due to Mexico deciding to do business through New Mexico rather than Texas.

His gun laws made the slaughter of children easier.

His subservience to corporations is leaving Texans without power.

He'll most likely win reelection, possibly a presidential nomination.

This is today's Republican Party.

@#3 ....he decided that the optics of him sneaking into the convention center wouldn't look good...

Yup.

It is all about the optics in an election season.

Remember the "Ground Zero" protests against building a Mosque in lower Manhattan? ( www.cnn.com 2010 )

There was quite the kerfuffle about those demonstrations.

Until, that is, Election Day occurred. Then, almost magically, all the protests seemed to have disappeared.

My point, if you've decided to bear with me this far...

Impending elections bring out the politics, if for no other reason than to drag out the politics.

Case in point, after Election Day 2010, the "Ground-Zero Mosque" disappeared from the New York City political scene.

The disappearance was almost magical. But there it was.

Gone.

Gone.

Well this yellow haired snake sits snug as a bug
Got more angle than a toby jug
Star lock hair pins, honey has faults
Shows her legs when opportunity knocks

Underneath her red sweater
She's a big-deal go-getter
There'll be some dramas inside your pajamas tonight, oh yeah

Sittin' stoned alone in my backyard
Askin' myself "Why should I work so hard?"
Sittin' dreamin' 'bout the days to come
Half-undressed, just soakin' up the sun

Sittin' here, I hope I don't get fried
Two years ago, you know, I almost died
And yet, there's nothin' better for your soul
Than lyin' in the sun and listenin' to rock 'n roll

Sunny days
Oh, sunny, sunny, sunny days
Ain't nothin' better in the world, you know
Than lyin' in the sun with your radio
...

Yeah, the 70's are an enigma for me.

Yeah. I gotta admit, most of (if not all of) my comments on this thread were really trying to state that conclusion.

But there you have it.

"Dumb as dirt."

Gov Abbott seems to be dumb as dirt based upon his actions..

I wish I could use a different phrase to describe my opinion of a Governor of a Great State of our Union, but I cannot think of another appellation.

Sometimes I think I am in the Sound Of Music, musing about ~how do you solve a problem like Maria?~

But I digress...

#25 | Posted by Angrydad at 2022-05-28 10:25 AM | Reply

Did the NRA, Neutered Republicans Association, even bother to talk about gun safety and what could be done to reduce gun violence? No. They talked about how schools should be "hardened" and how they should only have one entrance. Brilliant! A thousand kids using only one entrance. Perfect for fires. A perfect trap for a thousand kids.

Oh and of course they didn't fail to mention how the democrats are the problem "politicizing" gun safety and making the suffering of gun violence victims suffer even more.

All this during a POLITICAL event (that even the Governor was too embarrassed to attend) only 3 days after the mass shooting. Or as gun enthusiasts like to say "while the bodies of the little children are still twitching".

#26 | Posted by donnerboy at 2022-05-28 10:47 AM | Reply

Donner,

The hypocrisy in all this gun violence rhetoric is the lack of discussion of what is going on in inner cities, blacks shooting blacks.

Maybe people should be kneeling in those neighborhoods to make a point.

No...can't do that.

Oh STFU already Bill Johnson. Look you live by the sword you die by the sword. They have the power to stop it at any time. Get out of the gangs. Kids and teachers don't get to decide if they live or die. That's up to us as a society. We're all guilty of the neglect of doing what it would take to reduce these mass killings. We as a society have failed them. That's the crux of the matter.

#34 | Posted by LauraMohr at 2022-05-29 08:44 PM | Reply

BILLJOHNSON,

Most media outlets have a moratorium on reporting on specific gang related shootings, which make up the vast majority of homicide cases involving young, black men, in fear that affording public notoriety to the murderous acts will only encourage more homicides. It's something that stemmed from the gang warfare de-escalation efforts in the late '90s and early 2000s.

Same moratorium against reporting on suicides, unless the individual involved was of importance.

#35 | Posted by rstybeach11 at 2022-05-29 08:47 PM | Reply

Rsty,

The jury I was in I learned hospitals have a news blackout when these sort of shootings arrive in case other gang members decide to show up. That's for their protection.

However does that mean inner city gun violence is off limits other times.

My point was I am calling out people who rant about school shootings but apparently inner city black on black gun violence doesn't faze them. These cases it's not just gang members getting shot.

I do agree this is very disturbing as a reoccurring trend and schools need to be singled out and protected.

I think automatic rifles need to be singled out. Perhaps if 2nd Amendment opponents narrowed their focus, school shooting occurrences could be reduced.

#36 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2022-05-30 07:02 AM | Reply

I just looked in 2021 my city had 26 gun deaths with a population of about 500k
In May Uvalde had 21 gun deaths with a population of about 15k

My city 5.2 gun deaths per 100k people Uvalde 140 gun deaths per 100k people.

You think that might have something to do with the reporting on gun deaths? When a school shooter achieves the annual murder rate of a mid-sized city in one day that's going to be big news.

#37 | Posted by TaoWarrior at 2022-05-30 07:41 AM | Reply

Tao,

We just have a different way of viewing it.

It's not just numbers.

It's a demographic that has been raging for years and has taken many more lives with no hope in sight.

Perhaps school shootings just hit home for everyone.

I was simply calling it bs to drag out the 2nd Amendment debate everytime there is a school shooting but say "so what" about inner city kids killing each other.

#38 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2022-05-30 08:52 AM | Reply

It's a matter of scale and perceived innocence. Kids and teachers are pretty much the top end of the innocence scale while gang members are pretty much the bottom of the innocence scale in most people's minds. 1 low innocence person every two weeks vs 21 high innocence people in one day. This is not really something that should need to be explained.

Russians killing Ukrainian soldiers, war sucks. Russians killing Ukrainian women and children, war crimes.
