...The decision will expand access to pediatric coronavirus vaccines for parents across the state, which, under DeSantis' previous position, would have been limited to seeking vaccines at a select number of community health centers and facilities participating in a federal retail pharmacy program.

State health facilities will still not be placing orders for vaccine doses, a Biden administration official said.

"We are encouraged that after repeated failures by Governor DeSantis to order COVID-19 vaccines even after every other state had ordered, the State of Florida is now permitting healthcare providers to order COVID-19 vaccines for our youngest children," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told McClatchy.

"We believe it is critical to allow parents everywhere to have the choice to get their kids vaccinated and have a conversation with their pediatrician or healthcare provider....

Why would he be able to control that in the first place?

...Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is now allowing healthcare providers -- including pediatricians and children's hospitals -- to order COVID-19 vaccines from a federal program for children between six months and 5 years old, a reversal from earlier this week when providers were prevented from preordering doses, White House officials told McClatchy.

The decision will expand access to pediatric coronavirus vaccines for parents across the state, which, under DeSantis' previous position, would have been limited to seeking vaccines at a select number of community health centers and facilities participating in a federal retail pharmacy program.

The DeSantis administration is pushing back aggressively against the notion that its position has changed, with a spokesperson from the Florida Department of Health telling McClatchy that it never planned on preventing private healthcare providers from ordering doses....

Regardless of the spat, it is good that Florida is now saying, "a spokesperson from the Florida Department of Health telling McClatchy that it never planned on preventing private healthcare providers from ordering doses."

This is a reversal, that's clear as day.

Yeah. It looks like a major CYA to me.

But I wonder why the apparent sudden change of opinion?

Might be that DeSantis thought other states would follow his lead, but no one did. I doubt any worthwhile explanation will be forthcoming. They never gave one for the two weeks he was AWOL while his staff posted pictures of him at past events with current dates.

DeSantis never feels obligated to explain himself. You listen, you obey. That's it. Another high-heel fascist. The GQP is awash with them.

"But I wonder why the apparent sudden change of opinion?:

My guess is that he realized his original stance wouldn't poll well with a number of suburban housewives across the country whose votes he's going to need in his 2024 presidential campaign. It's one thing to be as anti-Covid restrictions as he has been and gives him high marks with a number of voters. It's another thing, however, to make it more difficult for parents who want to vaccinate their kids to get access to the vaccine.

DeSantis' decision is more about avoiding the wrath of Trump by blaming the doctors . . . and still get the suburban mom vote.

BTW - Florida still isn't partnering with the Federal Government to acquire and distribute the vaccine like all other states are doing. He's just decided he's not going to get in the way of "healthcare providers, including pediatricians and children's hospitals" from ordering it from the Feds.

Gosh. That's so white of him.

Bless you massa!

Let's not kid ourselves.

DeSantis is not partnering with the federal government because Trump would have his head on a platter if he did.

Aside from the fact that Trump gets his jollys out of torturing defenseless children, the more deaths he can blame on President Biden's administration.

Reversing course is republicl0wn speak for twisting in the wind.

And here I thought that DeSantis was an economy governor and didn't come with reverse.

DeSantis blundered when he made his original decision without consulting the GOP leadership for his marching orders.

I'm sure DeSantis was expecting brownie points. Instead, he got a reprimand and had to scramble to dig his way out . . . thus the half-assed reversal.

TWIN-No one would get the joke w/o an explanation. In high school in the late 60's, I worked at a local gas station. One day the 2 owners and their main mechanic told me to get in a VW bug and move it off the lift and park it outside. I started it up and could only find the 4 forward gears (learned afterwards you pushed down and right to find reverse) so the 3 of them pushed me out of the garage telling me that it's an economy car and doesn't come with reverse. I still chuckle 55 years later.

Been there, done that. I used to own a Chevy El Camino. Same problem.
