Susan Collins isn't stupid. That means she must be evil. It's impossible for me to believe she didn't know this was going to happen. This is malpractice. She should resign.

If anything, this is a cautionary tale as to the consequences of questioning a potential SC justice on how they will rule on something before they hear the specific case.
It's an invitation to be lied to. Quite frankly, many many many lies have been told in such hearings/questioning.

Yes, except that is not what happened in this instance.

Kavanaugh, et al, stated the obvious; i.e., that Roe was a long-standing precedent that had been affirmed and modified somewhat over time.
What Kavanaugh didn't volunteer, and what he was never asked, is whether or not he would vote to completely overrule Roe if given the opportunity to do so. He did indicate he would be open to overturning "settled law." For some reason, Susan ignored that comment.

In any event, everyone with a functioning brain (which might exclude Susan Collins and Joe Manchin) knew that he and Alito and Barrett and Thomas would do exactly that.

Why not? It's seemingly the only question that's mattered with regards to scrutinizing a potential jurist.....and yet he wasn't asked that question?
And it's also possible that elected senators aren't just dumb....they're hypocrites first before they're dumb.

Well since the Bork confirmation hearing, so-called conservatives and constitutionalists in Congress have made asking judges exactly WTF they would do if given the chance seem tawdry and unseemly.

I hope you're not just coming to this conclusion. I'm guessing you saw the way the Republican leadership in the Senate handled the Garland nomination as opposed to the Barrett nomination. The hypocrisy is so brazen and inexcusable there is almost no point in even mentioning it.

Uh...no. I've actually overshot on this issue by suggesting that the GOP deep down doesn't really care about abortion except as a wedge issue. Not that they really give a ---- about banning abortion. That brazen hypocrisy has no bounds.

You are correct, I think. For most Republicans this was just a decades-long cynical ploy to keep some religious extremists aligned with the party. Several of these jerks, I'm sure, have paid for abortions for family members "in trouble" or their mistresses.
