Paul Krugman: Many political analysts have spent years warning that the GOP was becoming an extremist, anti-democratic party. And over the past few days we've received even more reminders of just how extreme Republicans have become.

The Jan. 6 hearings have been establishing, in damning detail, that the attack on the Capitol was part of a broader scheme to overturn the election, directed from the top. A Republican-stuffed Supreme Court has been handing down nakedly partisan rulings on abortion and gun control. Republicans have been gerrymandering state legislatures to lock in control no matter how badly they lose the popular vote ...

The question that has been bothering me - aside from the question of whether American democracy will survive - is why. Where is this extremism coming from?

G.O.P. extremism is fed by resentment against the very things that, as I see it, truly make America great - our diversity, our tolerance for difference - it cannot be appeased or compromised with. It can only be defeated.

Interesting take. I've wondered as well. I work in construction in the south so I deal with conservatives daily, yet none of them are as extreme as the party. I would have thought as the party gets crazier and more extreme they would see it and turn their back on it, not saying become democrats, but become disengaged instead they keep supporting it.

Honestly I'm at a loss.

Cause its the nature of the modern United States: complete polarization by both parties. Good-bye moderation hello radicalism.

Republicans are motivated by jealousy and hatred of people around them. Democrats are motivated by a desire for fairness and equality for all.

Paid professional agitators.

According to a former marine captain who just suddenly and mysteriously died.

Goodbye to progressivism

Hello to regressivism.

At least now maggots have finally answered the question as to what year they want to take us back to.

Make America "great" again. You know, like it was just before January 22nd 1973.

Apparently.

I already answered this years ago. The Dems went way too extreme and the only way to fight it, unfortunately, is to resort to the same tactics. I've been saying ever since that if Dems were to ever get back to center and govern logically with critical thinking, they'd be in power without contest. And I've said I'd be happy to switch back to being a Dem if that ever happens. It's just unfortunate they continue to devolve into extremism. But I still have hope.

It's so sad how predictable all of this is but partisan hate prevents so many people from being objective. It's also sad that one party wanting to govern by our governing documents is considered extreme these days. Another reason why it's just time to split the nation and provide the opportunity for people to move to the government they prefer.

Split the nation?

Your words betray you.

Lincoln, a true Republican, would disagree with you. To the death.

That's how far from normal (or the "center") you and your part of extremists and insurrectionists have moved.

You don't even know what the "center" is.

Republicans are the feral animal trapped in a corner.

As the nation became more educated. As television exposed viewers to people and ideas which were new and acceptable. As America became more progressive.

Republicans saw their votes dwindling.

So they attack progress. They attack education.

They're trying their best to force people back into their pre 1940s roles.

Probably their most effective measures will be those taken to eliminate voters rights.

How do Putin, or Kim Jung Un, or the Islamic Mullahs of the Middle East remain in power?

They control the results of the elections.

Get ready to witness it in November.

Republicans have been passing laws to ensure their victories.

Give us an example.

Give us an example of dems doing something as extreme as trying to overthrow democracy and ousting anyone from the party who wont repeat a cult leader's obvious lies.

What have dems every done that is that extreme? What have they done that is extreme at all? Give us a list. It must be a pretty long shocking list to make your party become a fascist cult and try to end democracy.

Southern Strategy + end of "equal time for all sides" on the news. Proto-MAGA radio extremism built this.

#15 | Posted by IndianaJones at 2022-06-28 01:30 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 2

Republicaan extremism has its roots in the Southern Strategy that was developed for Nixon. The GOP identifies groups who self-identify as victtims and then campaigns to them.

"I already answered this years ago. The Dems went way too extreme"
Civil Rights was extreme. Nixon won an election based on that idea and the Republicans have continued to use it as their basic philosophy ever since. At the core of every Repiblican is a person who belirves they are a vivtim.

------- lmao. This is your brain on fox news.

Dems would be a center to center-right party in almost any first world country. Their big healthcare splash was forcing people to buy private health insurance. Just stop posting if you're this stupid.

Every time repubs do something bad, it's always because "dems made them do it".

Iraq was dems fault for believing republicans' lies about WMDs and not stopping them from invading.

Vaccine refusal was dems fault for saying people should get vaccinated.

Trump was dem's fault for electing a black guy.

This is classic. Dems control the WH, Congress and Senate but it's the GOP's fault that the country is going downhill. If Dems like Clown actually had a pair they would tell the leaders of their own party to govern, get things done that matter even if you have to give in a little so you can get everyone in your party on board. But no, they whine and cry and say it's everyone else's fault and they only way to solve it is to give them more power. American people have seen enough of the latest Democratic experiment.

Supposedly the end of the cold war did damage to losers who's personalities basically revolved around hating the USSR.

They started hating Democrats instead when Clinton won thanks to Ross Perot running for President and things just got crazier from there.

But they don't really control the Senate. It's a 50/50 tie with the VP to split the tie. Throw in a couple of DINOs and in truth the GOP REALLY has control. The Democrats were stupid not to throw out the Filibuster or at the VERY least move it back to the way it was 30 years ago. All a Trumper has to do is say I am filibustering and legislation on an issue stops. You can bet the GOP of today will throw out the Filibuster if it was a reversed situation.

Either you love Trump or you are an enemy of the people. Either you want to Make America Great Again or you hate America. Either you accept that Trump is always right, even when he contradicts your deepest values - or when he contradicts himself - or you are deficient in loyalty to him and hatred of his enemies. Either you stick with Trump or you're a Republican in name only, a RINO, and we know what Trump loyalists like Missouri's Eric Greitens plan to do with RINOs.
This might have a little something to do with this phenomenon.

#28 | Posted by tonyroma at 2022-06-28 09:49 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

Why did they become extreme? Have you ever watched their
media for more than 10 minutes? It is straight up brainwashing
propaganda. In many conservative states, it is practically the
only thing allowed on tv other than sports. Certainly the only
"news" allowed on tv...

decades of brainwashing has its eventual consequences,
a dumbed down populous, angry, upset, feeling put upon,
needing victims to blame... And, most importantly,
"too stupid to realize they have been manipulated into
thinking this way the whole time".

I think Krugman drew relevant parallels between the 2nd KKK and the modern GOP but with a header like "Why Did Republicans Become So Extreme?", he should have explained how it was pulled off. Maybe because it's obvious? I like how he explained none of this started with Trump, as Trump was an inevitable result of a fascist movement that began post GHWB with the emergence of an anti-democratic "neocon" GOP with the ilk of Limbaugh and Fox News as their propaganda arm. If the Democrats want to keep this beast at bay, DOJ had better file some charges for Jan 6, and not just the rank & file rioters. Otherwise, it will be demonstrated that if you can get away with an attempted coup, you can get away with anything.

#30 | Posted by babyhuey at 2022-06-29 09:11 AM | Reply | Newsworthy 2

They are so extreme because they can't admit to being wrong about everything. Living with themselves makes them ornery.
