With a record low number of Americans eligible to serve, and few of those willing to do it, this "is the year we question the sustainability of the all-volunteer force," said an expert.

Good, now let's cut the massive "big gubmint" defense budget dramatically.

The military used to be the employer of last resort for individuals that had limited opportunities in life.

With unemployment historically low, the recruits have other better opportunities to them now.

Personally I've had three young men that I coached in soccer enlist because they were definitely not college or employable material right now. Hopefully the military will turn them into something because they were heading for a hard life after high school.

"With a record low number of Americans eligible to serve"

The pool of those eligible to join the military continues to shrink, with more young men and women than ever disqualified for obesity, drug use or criminal records. Last month, Army Chief of Staff Gen. James McConville testified before Congress that only 23% of Americans ages 17-24 are qualified to serve without a waiver to join, down from 29% in recent years.

Increase the signing bonus and you'll get more people willing to do the work.

I believe it's called "Econ 101."

Republicans are working extremely hard to make this country not worth putting you life on the line for, and I say that as a veteran.

#9 How much profit did the military make before they went "woke"?

"Among Americans surveyed by the Pentagon who were in the target age range for recruiting, only 13% had parents who had served in the military, down from approximately 40% in 1995. The military considers parents one of the biggest influencers for service.

An expert on military personnel policy says that middle class parents, including those who are newly middle class, often encourage their kids to go to college before selecting a career, which hurts recruiting for enlisted personnel. "Changing the mind of parents is the really tough part, particularly if these are parents who worked really hard for their children to go to college," said Kate Kuzminski from the Center for a New American Security. She noted that recruiting ads increasingly target the parents of potential recruits. "That's where they're trying to win the hearts and minds."

Jeff - it sounds like the Mama Bears are interfering on behalf of their lil' cubs!

Ask Big Oil. That's where most of the "profits" the military generates go.

Apparently.

I can't imagine why a generation that grew up watching the military send the previous generation of soldiers into pointless wars that accomplished nothing would not be enthusiastic to sign up.

What happened in the late 80s and early 90s?
Republicans George H. W. Bush and Dick Cheney downsized the military, thus there are fewer children of military parents today.

Right, couldn't possibly have anything to do with the current generation growing up under the GWoT debacle.

It's because the military is too "woke." Uh huh. Sure.

Any of the Repubilcans, Independents, and Libertarians here advised their kids to join the military?

Train and equip Ukrainians and Taiwanese, those are the people that will do the actual fighting anyway. The US military should focus on logistics and intel, and hire lots of nerds.

Oh and purge the Nazis.

Purely anecdotal... I know quite a few parents and grandparents who are former military. After wars in the middle east that only seemed to provide photo-ops to high level politicos, while soldiers died, they have no interest in recommending their kids enlist for more of the same. Many of the elderly veterans don't even believe our military has served any useful purpose internationally (as in defending our freedom) since WWII. I think it's a good time to rethink how we use our military.

It may have changed, but at one point the AF was giving out $500k bonuses to fighter pilots who agreed to an additional ten-year contract at the end of their commitment.

I think my oldest daughter will likely join the AF as an intelligence officer. I can't say that I encouraged her, but she knows the game and seems to possibly want to be part of it.

Well if they can get the socialist benefits without having to kill on command... which is pretty much what the military offers... it can make a body reconsider stupid.

This should make righties happy. None of those lazy youngsters scoring pensions and living off the gubmint teat the rest of their lives.

#25 | Posted by jpw at 2022-06-28 09:13 PM | Reply

The military is government-sanctioned psychopathy. Fight the world to deny the same socialized benefits to their fellow citizen that they signed on the line for.

They haven't won a war in 8 decades and they still get paid.

#26 | Posted by RightisTrite at 2022-06-29 07:01 AM | Reply

That's not socialism. It's compensation for work, to be a Professional Soldier. Pure capitalism.

Socialism is the draft.

Nonsense the military is like moving in with a different set of parents. They feed house, clothe, and provide healthcare for you... and you must obey them or you will be punished.

Actually, low military recruitment is as good a reason as any to fire up a recession.

#28 | Posted by RightisTrite at 2022-06-29 11:41 AM | Reply

That's conscription. Even when the parents don't want you they're stuck with you.

Professional soldiery is a capitalist enterprise.
