Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, June 29, 2022

Michael Steele, the former head of the Republican National Committee, slammed the GOP in its current form and suggested that it was prepared to push aside Senate rules and impose a national abortion ban if it retakes Congress in the November midterms.

MFA:

In a Monday interview with MSNBC, Steele was asked by host Katy Tur if the GOP would seek to enact further restrictions on abortion in the wake of last week's Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right to an abortion.

Tur asked: "Sen. Chris Murphy said that if Republicans are able to retake the House and Senate, they will pass a federal ban on abortion. Do believe that would happen."

"Yes. Without hesitation. They will set the marker," Steele replied.

"Because it's in their base's interest to do so," he said. "That's the difference politically between the two parties. Republicans will go, 'oh, yeah, the Constitution and the filibuster, all the tradition, the sanctity of the Senate.' They don't give a rat's patootie about that when it's the bottom line in politics and power."

"So absolutely, a national ban on abortion will be one of the first pieces of legislation probably next to impeaching Joe Biden," he said, without providing evidence for his claim that the GOP would seek to impeach Biden.

Good, it's time Americans get what they vote for.

Perhaps once the public sees what Republicans actually stand for, making raped women and girls bear their attacker's babies and dying from forced pregnancy, they'll get a clue.

Make sure you vote Jill Stein in 2024 folks. You want to send a message to the Dems. Who cares how many innocent people suffer as a result.

When McConnell will be asked about it, he will state that it long outdated and was never part of the Constitution and when the GOP becomes the minority party they will whine about the filibuster being killed.

... GOP Will Overturn Filibuster ...

My concern, that I've previously noted, is that the Republicans may not have to overturn the filibuster, and may also have a veto-proof majority come January 2023.

I don't remember who it was, but some winger on another thread said recently "you guys deserved Trump". Referring to Democrats. I actually think I agree with that. Maybe Dems didn't deserve Trump so much as deserved a kick in the collective --- to get their collective ---- together. Because while the Dems cliques are still fighting each other on the playground the Reps are running away with the ball. And if the Dems don't get focused and put together a coordinated fight, with this SC the Reps could have this country FUBAR in 10 years.

Well, then use your freaking majority you have today to legalize abortions before your power runs out. I mean, solutions are sometimes so simple that those blinded by partisan hate can't even see them.

But either way, at least he's admitting that Reps will follow the Constitution to pass legislation. Dems haven't. Which is why Dems have been fighting the wrong fight. They should be fighting to change the Constitution so that the Federal government has ultimate control over everything. Whether or not someone agrees they should, that is how our government is built and has been since day 1. Don't like it? The Constitution also provides the ability to make changes. So fight the right battle instead of whining and crying like babies that weren't aborted.

Are they really so impressionable that they think rational people would vote for a republican? It's as if their entire platform right now is "give us power or we will feed you to the trump cult."

Blackmail the Base; finally a bumper-sticker friendly catchphrase for the DNC.

Actually I would have voted for anyone who wasn't Trump, even the old Jewish, atheist, socialist. Best of luck selling that to the rest of the country, though.

Vote Blue no matter who? Yeah, cause we see what throwing a tantrum and sitting out elections gets you. "United we stand" applies to progressives too. Enjoy the corollary to that, "divided we fall," as SCOTUS spends the next 30 to 60 years dismantling every last bit of progressive legislation this country has passed since The Great Depression.

History shows the democrats don't believe that.

Progressives do "vote blue no matter who" in the end. Democrats don't. That's why they cheat to force their corporate candidates onto their base.

Unfortunately democrats like you have been so quick to accuse everyone except your own elected officials in the wake of this unsurprising repeal of Roe that it is clear you are doomed to repeat the same mistakes again and again. A sure sign of insanity.

"we see what throwing a tantrum and sitting out elections gets you."

Nice meme but that never happened. Thanks to progressives actually giving a ---- about what happens to this country, hillary won the popular vote. Unfortunately 30 years of democrats like her moving the party leadership further and further right failed to protect the integrity of our elections. We see what a tantrum about an imagined lineage of dynastic control of a party gets you.

A million dead Americans in a pandemic and the systemic reduction of human rights with the threat of outright fascism just ahead of us. Progressives didn't aid this. The DNC and the corporate minority of its voting base did. Own this.

I will never go back to the R's while they are the theocracy party, but the Dems don't have my unconditional allegiance. Why was Biden nominated and elected? Because he wasn't Trump. There's a D president, a D House, and a tie Senate with a D VP tiebreaker. And meanwhile the R's keep getting wins. What are the Dems doing about it? What good things have Dem's accomplished in the last 20 years? The ACA? It was a start, but didn't really do a lot. Dems have had plenty of opportunity to expound on it but can't even improve the one --------- thing they did accomplish. This party has got to get it together if it wants to stay relevant.

They're weak. They're cowardly. They're stupid. They're obsessed with identity politics. They don't lead like republicans do. Repubs lead their moron followers to the (false) beliefs they want them to vote based on. Dems just take surveys and try to please different tiny slices of minority groups.

Look at how much support bernie got. He's a cranky old man. If some young charismatic person took up his same agenda they'd win. But dems are too stupid and addicted to corporate cash to do it.

You hit it, Speak. Leadership. Call the R's whatever you want, disagree with their policies all you want, hate their ties to organized religion all you want, they are organized and they have strong effective leadership. I'm not calling any of them good people, but Trump led effectively, DeSantis is leading effectively, Noem is leading effectively. I think Trump might be done. But I predict a DeSantis/Noem R ticket in 24 and I think they'll be very hard to beat. Especially if Russia v. Ukraine is resolved soon, gas prices go down, the global supply chain works itself out in the next year, and inflation subsides about the time the midterms bring a slew of R's to Congress. You know the R's will take credit for 'fixing the economy". And our ADD nation will have forgotten everything else.

Umm, Bernie Bros and Green party voters (in two elections) beg to differ.

Anywho, nothing for me to own. I didn't even like Hillary, but I still voted for her, cause what else was I going to do?

Popular vote doesn't mean squat in our system. Trump won the electoral college in 2016 by almost the exact same number that Biden won in 2020, about 90K votes. Trash talking the only candidate that could have stopped Trump's win after the nomination served no one except Trump. So you own it if you want, or don't.

It's all pretty funny to me at this point. "Oh boohoo! I'm a liberal and SCOTUS is going to destroy our hopes and dreams. Let me attack the only party that could have stopped them in the past or could stop them in the future!"

So primary them, just like the Repubs did as they chased out their moderate voices. But at the end of the day, come back and vote for the more reasonable alternative instead of staying at home pouting or throwing away a vote on a party that has no chance of winning.

Are you sure you aren't a Clinton democrat? Your projected fear of the word "socialist" makes you seem like one. It isn't the 1980s and the politics and economics of 40 years ago don't work today. The sooner people like you stop defending politicians that believe it is, the faster we can actually fix this country.

The largest voting blocs are not fooled by punditry and attack ads like boomers. The fact that you think the base can be tricked so easily is kind of exactly why the DNC insiders dupe people like you into electing right wingers with a (D) next to their name.

Great tactic though; tell your base they are stupid and will probably fall for GOP and corporate meme ads.

The party that lost it's mind is the one that threw away all their values to become the slavish cult of the worlds most obvious con man, and then tried to overthrow democracy.
