Alyssa Rosenberg: It's one thing for Trump to relieve his followers of their money for dubious causes. But it's different when people start dying. The number of people who have died seemingly in service of an idol as unworthy as Donald Trump is tragic.

Four of Trump's supporters died at the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol: Ashli Babbit, who was shot while trying to climb through a broken window; Kevin Greeson, who suffered a fatal heart attack; Benjamin Philips, who succumbed to a stroke; and Rosanne Boyland, whose official cause of death was "acute amphetamine intoxication," but who was caught up in a crush of bodies on the Capitol grounds. Christopher Stanton Georgia died by suicide later that month after he was arrested on unlawful entry charges stemming from Jan. 6; he pleaded not guilty before his death.

Now comes the death of Ricky Shiffer - shot and killed in a stand-off with police officers after he allegedly tried to break into a FBI office in Cincinnati - who was also apparently at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

The absurdity and maliciousness of the cause for which these people have died only compounds the horror of their deaths. How is it that no one, no institution, could offer something more substantive than the manifest hollowness of Trump and Trumpism?

Those of us who live outside the boundaries of this mad realm may be tempted to count ourselves lucky. Still, we should be concerned for the residents of Trumpland for their own safety. And if that's not enough, we should care because the people who die for Donald Trump may someday take others with them.

The last sentence of the last paragraph seems like a foregone prophecy just waiting to become true. We've never had a President who openly cajoles his most volatile supporters to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights against fellow citizens and institutions heretofore seen as protectors of the Constitution, not its enemies while trying to fairly uphold the rule of law.

For starters, the Christianity you see on TV preaches right-wing hate.

Maybe "TV" just by itself is a better answer.

No institution has the reach of Mass Media.

I think we can all see the dangers when this tool is held exclusively in the hands of the State.

But it's just as dangerous in the hands of moneyed interests.

Probably worst when in a country like USA, where politics is funded by private money, and the state doesn't even have a broadcast TV station.

While I hope the Capitol Police and others like them, never hesitate to shoot to kill when an armed person confronts them. Just talking at them violates "Tuco's Rule." Trump's TRUE BELIEVERS will not stop, even after their beloved idol is safely dead and either buried or else turned into a tasteful taxidermy display involving ---------- or sex acts illegal in many jurisdictions. Think about TFG impaled by a gigantic similarly taxidermized Silverback Gorilla. If TFG is buried any monument that also incorporates a urinal will be fine. Ladies wanting to avail themselves of the urinal may either forsake modesty or else bring their personal urinary device.

You're right. Here's the thing... everyone and every living thing is going to die... regardless.

The truth is there is no dying for anyone... except in the minds of the deluded and narcissistic.

Dying is just the inevitable conclusion of life, it isn't a sacrifice.

In all honesty, I don't think that these people think they're doing these acts "for Trump." They see Trump and the MAGA wing of the GOP (so like 95% of the GOP) as the only legitimate ruling body in the US. It follows, then, that acts like these are, in their mind, not a sacrifice for Trump himself but for the US of A and the very concept of national identity.

The only election in my lifetime that will be more important than 2022 will be 2024. While I probably thought the same thing in 2020, here's the rub: both sides view this election as a referendum on democratic values and the US as a whole. Both sides claim the other side is trying to undermine democracy and democratic values. Both sides will claim that this could be the last free election if the other side wins. Obviously both sides can't be right, but the fervor these people feel goes well beyond Trump.

Absolutely correct. People were GIVEN Obama/Biden bumper stickers and yard signs just like normal candidates do during the election cycles. Trump has SOLD tens of millions of dollars in Trump emblazoned merchandise since 2016.

Anyone been on a boat since in the last 8 years? Holy ---- the flags...

I live in Ohio which went for Obama in 2016. Never saw that much of anything. Signs & bumper stickers here and there.
TFG is out of office for over a year and there are houses with enormous "FCKKK JOE BIDEN!". Saw one yesterday - was hanging right out front, off the house, a giant, ugly black banner.

"Ah, pulling in to home sweet home with the kids" "FKKKK THE PRESIDENT!!!!!AAAAAHRRRRRGGHGH!!!!"

I had a talk with some "Independent, small business owners" yesterday. They were offended and surprised when I was able to back up my assertions about Biden's successful presidency, how T**** is a white nationalist/fascist and how "America First" was a slogan used by the KKK not that long ago...

The takeaway was that these folks didn't like Dubya, and had nowhere to go, so they have formed an opinion that ALL politicians are crooked, so T**** is a breath of fresh air for them. He gives them a safe, magical place to air their grievances over whatever Fox tells them to be upset about (of course, they don't watch Fox, but magically also watch Tucker Carlson regularly...LOL). It's all conspiracy theories and both sides of the establishment...a mixture of anarchists and Christo Fascist white grievance...but don't bring up racism.

J6 was a riot and whatabout BLM? etc...

Seemingly successful, intelligent enough to be able to have a position, but living in a world where misinformation and outright lies/propaganda are all they know, their arguments were easily rebutted with facts and they simply couldn't believe that they were wrong about anything. I even threw them a bone on a couple of topics, which really confused them.

Point being...we're in bad shape with about half the country - if the "smart" ones are unable to recognize objective reality, the fringe cases are completely lost. The future of the USA is not very bright.

"both sides"... does this let you off the hook for objectively looking at any situation? If I ask you what you think of Trump will you talk about Obama? This is not talking. This is you trying to control a narrative with other stories. Deal with the topic at hand. The whataboutism is old.
