Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

In the days since former President Donald J. Trump's Florida home was searched by federal agents last week, he has posted dozens of messages on Truth Social, his social media platform, about the Democrats, the F.B.I. and other perceived foes. Here are some of the false and unsupported statements he has made since the F.B.I.'s search.

Admin's note: Participants in this discussion must follow the site's moderation policy. Profanity will be filtered. Abusive conduct is not allowed.

*After the search becomes public, Trump suggests, without evidence, that Biden played a role.(8/8-9)
*Trump suggests, without evidence, that the F.B.I. may have planted evidence. He then makes false claims about Obama.(8/10)
*After reports reveal a focus on classified documents, Trump suggests the search was unnecessary.(8/11)
*After the F.B.I. log of seized documents shows some marked classified, Trump says, without evidence, that the documents were already declassified.(8/12)
*Trump repeats unfounded claim that documents could have been planted.(8/13-14)
For a normal human being, this chronology would be extremely embarrassing - virtually akin to throwing ketchup against the wall and seeing what sticks. For Donald, this is simply the latest example of his deflector shields being turned to maximum in the attempt to blame any and everyone but himself for specific conduct he was solely responsible for. We've never had a man so unwilling to bear responsibility for himself while accusing everybody else of acting worse than he does.

If Trump didn't have projection, he'd have nothing at all but for hatred and bile.

If at first you don't succeed, lie, lie again.

I can't believe we have to timeline the lies of a POTUS/xPOTUS just to keep them all straight.

He's got nothing but projection and the narcissist's prayer. And his followers love him for it.

Actually speaks more about them that it does about him.

Pathetic, deplorable, and shameful all wrapped in Trump burrito.

"I can't believe we have to timeline the lies of a POTUS/xPOTUS just to keep them all straight."

Why do we have to keep them "straight"? Will people forget that Trump is a lying sociopath if we don't constantly perform a conversion therapy on his gay lies with some weird OCD ritual?

Will people forget? Probably not
Will some people act and pretend as if they don't know he's a liar? Absolutely

Pointing out the incessant lies to the purposely obtuse isn't being OCD, it's a reapplication of egg

When you have to ask for the files back, which you didn't take and were declassified before they were planted by the FBI in a locked storage area that didn't hold any classified material, you have some problems keeping your story straight.

" Will people forget that Trump is a lying sociopath "

About 30% of the population. Got anything else?

I loathe the way trump holds up his little white fist next to his enormous pumpkin head. It's like Diet Hitler.

Now he says he took them home to work on them.

He said the word "work." ~~ LOL

I'm still trying to figure this one out...

Trump said all documents are instantly declassified if he takes them from the White House to Mar-a-lago.

BUT he says he returned all classified documents from Mar-a-lago to the FBI months ago.

How could you return classified documents that aren't classified?

Op-Ed: Why Did Trump Take Classified Documents in the First Place?

...Keep worrying about FBI overreach if you'd like, but more pressing answers are needed for why Trump absconded with the documents in the first place.I think there are three likely reasons Trump wanted to keep all that top-secret paperwork and classified paraphernalia to himself -- even if we still don't know exactly what he had stashed in his safe, closets and socks at Mar-a-Lago.

Reason One seems relatively harmless. Trump is a seven-year-old grown old, and he liked some of the cool doodads you get your hands on as president. He reportedly wanted to keep an Air Force One model displaying a bespoke paint job he had commissioned for the presidential jet and resented restrictions against hanging on to such stuff. Among the disputed documents at Mar-a-Lago was a meteorological map of Hurricane Dorian that he had infamously marked up with a black Sharpie. Who knows why that map was so important to him? Who cares? The second and third reasons aren't harmless at all. They're deeply damaging and troubling.

So, Reason Two: Money. Unfettered greed has motivated Trump his entire life. He didn't get into the casino business to beautify Atlantic City. He didn't propose a mega-development on Manhattan's West Side because it would have made New York more livable. He didn't start Trump University to educate students, and he didn't host "The Apprentice" to tutor entrepreneurs. He didn't originally run for president to revitalize democracy. Money, money, money.Other graduates of the Trump administration have cashed in in ways that should raise national security concerns. Former White House adviser Jared Kushner (Trump's son-in-law) and former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin have received billions of dollars from Saudi Arabia to seed their nascent money-management firms. Those deals still look like influence peddling, but to Trump they undoubtedly looked like huge and enviable paydays.

That's a lot of financial pressure, especially for someone already prone to be a money-grubber. It should also raise alarms for any rational observer concerned that Trump might have been inspired to use the powers and access to records that his presidency provided to rake in lucre by peddling classified information after he left the White House. Perhaps that won't prove to be the case -- and I hope it doesn't -- but extreme vigilance around that particular problem would be well advised.

Reason Three: Reputational damage. Trump reportedly held on to letters he exchanged with North Korea's dictator, Kim Jong Un. Perhaps vanity inspired that move because Trump has referred to such correspondence as "love letters." But what other communications are contained in the documents Trump kept? Anything with Russian President Vladimir Putin or Chinese President Xi Jinping? How about documents pertaining to Trump's phone calls with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy from that time when Trump was trying to strong-arm Zelenskiy into digging up dirt on his political opponent, Joe Biden. Those communications led to the first of Trump's two impeachment proceedings.Again, maybe there's nothing of this sort, either, in the documents Trump kept.

But it's not unreasonable to worry that his communications with foreign leaders -- and anything disreputable or possibly illegal that took place in connection with those -- could have been something he felt compelled to hide. The frenetic pace at which Trump has seeded the ground with lies in the wake of the Mar-a-Lago search certainly suggests that he has something to hide and that he's worried about the investigation. ...

- Trump took highly classified material from the White House and stored it in an unsecured location at his home without telling anyone.
- When the National Archives came looking for documents, it took eight months of back-and-forth before Trump passed along 15 boxes of material.
- When the archives noted classified information among the documents returned, they took this to the DOJ for further investigation.
- Trump claimed there were no more classified documents. This included a written statement from his attorney.
- Trump put Patel and Solomon in charge of the documents"not to sort out issues, but to use them to expand the myth of Trump as victim.
- The DOJ continued to negotiate for more months to see what still remained. When they finally got a look at what Trump had in storage, it was clear that there was more classified material.
- Seeing what Trump had, the DOJ instructed him to better secure the documents while they continued to negotiate for their return.
- Rather than keeping the documents secured, security footage showed that boxes of documents were being moved in and out of the supposedly secure area.
- One of Trump's own aides tipped off the FBI that there were serious concerns about the content and handling of the documents.
- The FBI sought and executed a search warrant.
