Garrett M. Graff: Historically, the F.B.I. has been arguably the most culturally conservative and traditionally white Christian institution in the entire U.S. government. That's right: Far from being a bastion of progressive thinking, every single director of the F.B.I. has been a Republican-aligned official, going all the way back to its creation.

Of all the weird and historically discordant moments and news stories of the Donald Trump era, few seem stranger than watching the former president and his allies demonize the F.B.I. as some sort of rogue "woke" Democratic deep state mob.

It's an institution so culturally conservative, even by the standards of law enforcement, that Democratic presidents have never felt comfortable - or politically emboldened - enough to nominate a Democrat to head the bureau. Such history suggests that the issue here is Mr. Trump and not institutional bias.

Its current director, Christopher Wray, who oversaw the agents conducting last week's search of Mar-a-Lago, was nominated by Mr. Trump himself and came to the job with sterling Republican credentials: He was the head of the criminal division in George W. Bush's Justice Department, a member of the conservative Federalist Society and a clerk for Judge J. Michael Luttig, a Republican judicial icon.

Mr. Wray replaced the F.B.I. director Mr. Trump fired, James Comey, who had been nominated by Barack Obama and was the former deputy attorney general of George W. Bush's Justice Department. His predecessor Robert Mueller, who served in the Justice Department for both Bush presidencies, was nominated by George W. Bush.

And before them - from Louis Freeh (a George H.W. Bush judge) to the F.B.I.'s founder, J. Edgar Hoover - all of the F.B.I.'s directors were Republican-aligned officials.

That political conservatism in the bureau's ranks traces back to the culture that Hoover cultivated for a half-century, when the bureau viewed its role as policing and protecting a uniquely conservative (and Christian) view of the United States.

The irony of Donald Trump and Republicans demonizing the F.B.I. is that over the course of its century-plus existence, the bureau has actually stood as one of America's cultural bulwarks protecting the nation from "radicals" and "subversives" who sought to diversify the United States beyond its traditional white, male, Christian power structure.

Yet again more proof that Trumpism is rooted-in both malignant illogic and anti-intellectualism - it's very lifeblood being the ignorance and gullibility of its most fervent proponents. After 4 years of dog whistles, Trump's loyal insurrectionists are now in open opposition to the very group of public servants most aligned with their public cries of white, Christian nationalism embodied by the faithful - if not sometimes oppressive - adherence to the rule of law, itself written to support the existent power structure of white male dominance since our founding texts were written 250 years ago.

Now, because Trump is such a crook, holding him to societal standards is viewed as persecution by him and his acolytes as though the FBI has morphed into a BLM-coddling woke mob of bleeding heart liberals simply because Trump sells this delusion to historically-bereft followers. Somehow though I don't think attacking the FBI is going to be a winner for Trump especially if more of his armed insurrectionists try and take them on. FBI agents have guns and aren't afraid to use them if push comes to shove. And it certainly appears that shoving is almost certainly in our near future.

Dear Mr. Garland,

How can I help lower the temperature and calm things down?

Here, let me pour this can of gasoline on the fire to cool it down.

Far from being a bastion of progressive thinking, every single director of the F.B.I. has been a Republican-aligned official, going all the way back to its creation.

Yeah, but the current GOP doesn't align with Republican officials going back to their creation.

They've gone so nutso off the right end of the spectrum Republicans pre-2016 are libruls to them.

I don't think Trump knows that the FBI is conservative or anything else. He only knows that they're in his way. They're just another entity that talks ---- about him. They may as well be a Manhattan zoning commission or the New Jersey gaming authority or Marla Maples lawyers for all he cares. They're all the same.

Donald Trump isn't a conservative and doesn't want to be one. He thought he was the king of America* and doesn't understand why that ended. He wants his throne back.

*apologies to Mr. Costello

I know a wife of an FBI agent. She was a big Trump supporter, then Giuliani starting saying things about the Wacko FBI early in Trump's presidency. LOL, I asked her about "What did Ruddy call it a bunch of wackos"? She walked away leaving a group of us laughing at her. Wonder if her hubby has been threatened lately?

A view from afar (AFP)...

Once hated by the left, FBI is now US conservatives' evil demon
www.digitaljournal.com

...Agents of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation are used to criticism, but never in the agency's history have they faced anything like the attacks from conservatives after last week's raid on former president Donald Trump's Florida home.

Over its more than 100-year history, the FBI has been excoriated by southerners committed to racist segregation, by civil libertarians defending political activists and especially by African Americans whose 1960s liberation movement was treated as an acute national threat by the agency.

But the extraordinary threats of the past week originate in the FBI's political bedrock: conservative Republicans.

"It's the world turned upside down," said Kenneth O'Reilly, a retired University of Alaska historian, who has written books about the FBI and politics.

According to O'Reilly, the FBI has historically been a "deeply conservative institution" with a bipartisan constituency in Washington.
FBI raids US properties of sanctioned Russian oligarch

But since Trump condemned the FBI as corrupt and fascist after they searched his Mar-a-Lago estate on August 8 for illegally retained top secret documents, the attacks have kept coming " and his supporters have fanned the flames.

Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel accused the bureau of "abuse of power."

Senator Marco Rubio, a Republican from Florida, compared the agency to secret police in a Marxist dictatorship, while Representative Paul Gosar declared: "We must destroy the FBI."

Online, including on Trump's own Truth Social network, the threats were more violent -- and turned real....

The Christian Right Plots How To Avenge The FBI Raid
talkingpointsmemo.com

...Right-wing Christian media kicked into high gear in the days following the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago, coalescing around a defense of former President Donald Trump based on a smorgasbord of persecution complexes, whataboutism, conspiracy theories, lies, and misinformation about law enforcement and the judicial process.

The Christian right and its GOP allies are counting on their base consuming a steady diet of these radio shows, podcasts, social media posts, and email blasts, tuning out any coverage that conflicts with their image of Trump as both a virile hero and a victim besieged by radical leftists at the FBI.

For them, God anointed Trump, choosing an "unlikely" leader to restore Christian America.

It is precisely because Trump is singularly capable of resurrecting the Christian nation, this thinking goes, that the radical leftists of the deep state want to bring him down. ...
