Who cares? The monarchy should have been scrapped centuries ago. Queens and nobility are a relic of a lost and unlamented age.

His name is Andrew.

She's probably dead already and they're just waiting to make the announcement because of some kind of protocol.

When I think about the Royal Family I am reminded of very early text-based PC video games like Hitchhiker's Guide (which may still be playable online now).

Anyway, one of them was a world building game where you picked what kind of government there would be, then build farms and ,industry and grew peasants.... one of the gov choices that seemed to do really well was, "Benevolent Monarchy".

Of course, in these days of neoliberal corporate government, "benevolent" isn't even in their dictionaries.

"The Queen is dead. Long live the King!

We think we know what will happen when the reign of Elizabeth II ends"as earth-shaking events go, this must certainly be one of history's most well-rehearsed. Once a year every year since the late 1970s, practice funeral processions for senior members of the Royal Family such as Prince Philip, Prince Charles and the Queen have taken place in the streets of London under cover of darkness.

The Queen's funeral plans, code-named "London Bridge," have been planned by Her Majesty herself right down to the most minute detail"from the guest list, flowers, readings and musical selections to which regimental units would participate and the color of their uniforms."

"The sovereign is supposed to be above politics, but Prince Charles is actually somewhat of a rebel in his tendency to express his views on social and environmental issues.

"In contrast to the Queen, who is careful to avoid expressing strong opinions in public"and instead encourages the people she meets at garden parties, receptions, and walkabouts to speak about their own experiences, Charles is known to hold firm opinions on a variety of subjects, including organic farming, architecture, and sustainable development,"

Harris says. "Climate change and environmental conservation are key political issues in the 21st century, and Charles will certainly not be seen as an impartial figure on these subjects, as his views are well-known."

I'm going to have to watch The King's Speech again. It's really quite a moment when his daughter's curtsy to their King rather than hugging him as their father.

And yes those girls are supposed to be Queen Elizabeth and her sister Ann.

For Britain, this moment is a part of over 1000 years of tradition.

And this particular royal family is descended from a king who ruled in 800 CE.

So Brits mourning a Queen born in 1926, and celebrating the new King is understandable, no matter how dated the idea of monarchy.

Has he been tested to determine he's the right choice for the job? Does he possess talents to merit this? Does he have an amazing intellect?

No, no and no. He's just a random kid from a random family born before his siblings.

Nope, that wouldn't be for me.

I can't imagine living as a Royal where everything you say is scripted and everything you do is talked about by the British media ~ not to mention the nosey tabloids. Royals were raised with so much regimentation in their daily life that I often wondered if they ever let their hair down.

Nobody here is ignorant of how monarchies work, buttercup. We just object to them because they are a fundamentally idiotic way to run anything.

The idea of having a King in charge of our executive branch or commander in chief of our military is indeed offensive to the American form of government.

But I think the British have offset some that with their awesome Parliament.

Because it is a great show (old bean). I love watching their Parliamentary debates. I think in some ways they have evolved in a way to be more honest than our own Congress. We have some Brits in our family and they are mostly really proud of their Parliament and I can see why.

I think the British are just into that sort of pageantry and drama and fascinated by their own history of royalty. Now soon I think we will see how their new King continues the evolution of the monarchy. It is still an interesting form of government even if it is a bit offensive to American sensibilities.

Two of the main things we hear from the MAGA crowd are "you think you're better than me" and "you can't tell me what to do."

Monarchy says this one family is better than you -- and always will be -- and they can tell you what to do.

But I think the British have offset some that with their awesome Parliament.

Their Parliament is fun. Particularly Question Time.

The monarchy has no real power in Britain, which is as it should be. They just have a thousand years of traditions.

Kinda like the Beatles...

Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl
But she doesn't have a lot to say
Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl
But she changes from day to day

I wanna tell her that I love her a lot
But I gotta get a belly full of wine

Her Majesty is a pretty nice girl
Someday I'm gonna make her mine, oh yeah
Someday I'm gonna make her mine

But can you imagine having to genuflect to another American because they are a descendant of George Washington? The idea is offensive.

My family tree shows the "Wessyngton" (Washington) family of Lancashire (Lancaster, England), George's ancestors, intermarried more than once. I have two Grandmas Wessyngton/Washington. Also discovered I am also descended from the Windsor through Edward II and Edward III, and a distant cousin to the British royals on Elizabeth's side. And not even a Christmas card!! LOL

FYI: George Washington's last name came from the name of their family estate in Lancashire, England, "Wessyngton" when some began using last names in the late 12th and early 13th centuries.

The grooms in those Wessyngton/Washington marriages were from my branch, the Lawrence's of Lancaster/Lancashire.

Paul McCartney and the Queen met several times and seem to have a good rapport. During one of their meets, the Queen famously once said "We have many Beatles records at home." Paul responded "That's great! I have many Queen records at home too!" The Queen laughed quite heartily at this.

"A whole bunch of Foundung Fathers were prepared to make George Washington their new King."

You never could trust those "Foundungs".

Almost only counts in horseshoes hand grenades (and nuclear bombs). The President of the US is not a King. Much to the chagrin of Trumpy.

The biggest problem with our constitution was no Bill of Rights and the only real cancer of our constitution was in allowing the continuation of slavery in any form. Which was eventually to be as deadly to America as an atom bomb. A bomb we eventually threw at ourselves.

Without continuing slavery there would have been no American Republic at all. It was a much hated but nescessary compromise.

The southern colonies would have fought with the British without it.

Our American experiment would have been stillborn, or aborted before birth.

Be glad this country began in it's present form at all.

Even if it is a militaristic hegemon intent on pushing the entire would around and imposing the "American Way" on the entire earth and outer space.

Maybe we should have prevented slavery in 1787 or earlier.

Then the US wouldn't be around in it's current form to bully the world.

The big ongoing question now (one worthy of Vegas odd makers) is whether or not President Biden will invite Trump to join the group of ambassadors flying to London onboard Air Force One for the funeral.

Part I ~~ Will Trump be invited?
Part 2 ~~ Will Trump accept?
Part 3 ~~ Will Trump try to hijack Air Force One?

The queen is gone. An interesting lady in many respects.

There is a lot of important stuff going on in the US, politically, legalistically, culturally. I wish the US news and events would stop being buried by news of the queen's passing, before and after she is buried.

I guess to the above points around a monarchy not being logical is missing the point. It is inherently illogical. I think it really has to do with the pride of a nation and it's history. It's an institution that has been around 1,000 years - the longest in Europe. I think we Americans have trouble understanding this because it's a new person every 8 or so years. Plus we lived through Trump.

Said another way, maybe we'd feel differently if George Washington had descents that represented our history in mortal form; not some statue or museum we'd have to visit to remember.

I wouldn't feel differently. I'd think why is the great-great-great-great-great-grandson of George Washington being treated like he's important?

RIP. End of an era in the sense that the Queen was a public figure from pre-WWII til now, and from her early days as a figure with political capital, interacted with influential people who were born from the 19th century to those who were born in the 21st century.
