...Ukrainian forces kept up their surge in the country's east Saturday, after punching through Russian defenses in a surprise counteroffensive that could prove a decisive turning point in the war.

Kyiv said its military had recaptured swaths of territory in a fast-moving thrust centered on the region around Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, that threatened to turn into a much broader rout.

Officials shared a flood of images and videos from the region, with some verified by NBC News showing soldiers raising Ukrainian flags over once-occupied cities and villages or posing victoriously next to road signs.

Others appeared to show troops being met by residents who offered soldiers everything from heartfelt thanks to pancakes.

"As of now, the armed forces liberated and took control of more than 30 settlements in the Kharkiv region," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address Friday.

NBC News has not verified the claims

The Institute for the Study of War, a U.S.-based military think tank, said in its latest update Saturday that Ukrainian forces had "captured an estimated 2,500 square kilometers (about 1,000 square miles)" in the area by Friday night. Britain's defense ministry said that "lead elements have advanced up to 50km (31 miles) into previously Russian-held territory on a narrow front....

Ukraine's lightning offensive catches Russia off guard
www.axios.com

...A surprise two-pronged offensive by Ukrainian forces is reshaping the battlefield and forcing the Russians to scramble for reinforcements.

Driving the news: Ukraine launched its long-awaited push on Kherson in southern Ukraine last week, before following up with a rapid advance near Kharkiv in the northeast that seems to have caught Vladimir Putin's troops by surprise.

- - - A Ukrainian general said Friday that Ukraine's forces had advanced about 50km (31 miles) in three days of fighting in the region. Images spread of Ukrainian troops entering town after town, greeted by joyous residents who spent six months under occupation.

- - - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the "good news" but added, "now is not the time to name the settlements to which the Ukrainian flag returns."

- - - The surprise Ukrainian offensive seems to be aimed at cutting off the Russian forces defending Izyum, a key logistics hub for Russian operations in the north, and eventually taking the city itself, says Michael Kofman, a top expert on Russia's military at CNA. ...

Russia abandons Ukraine bastion in apparent collapse after Kyiv severs supply line
www.reuters.com

...Moscow abandoned its main bastion in northeastern Ukraine on Saturday, a sudden apparent collapse of one of the war's principal front lines after Ukrainian forces moved to encircle the area in a shock advance.

The state-run TASS news agency quoted Russia's defence ministry as saying it had ordered troops to leave the area around the city of Izium in Kharkiv province, saying they would be sent to reinforce operations elsewhere in neighbouring Donetsk.

The announcement came hours after Ukrainian troops captured the city of Kupiansk further north, the sole railway hub supplying Russia's entire frontline across northeastern Ukraine. That left thousands of Russian troops abruptly cut off from supplies across an entire stretch of front that has seen some of the most intense battles of the war.

Ukrainian forces have recaptured dozens of towns and villages held by Russia for months, since bursting through the frontline earlier this week. Early on Saturday, Ukrainian officials posted photos of their troops raising the country's blue and yellow flag in front of city hall in Kupiansk at dawn.

"To achieve the stated goals of the Special Military Operation for the liberation of Donbas, it was decided to regroup the Russian troops located in the districts of Balakliia and Izium for the purpose of increasing efforts in the Donetsk direction," TASS quoted Russia's defence ministry as saying....

Reports are Russians are retreating from Kharkiv.

I hope the Ukrainians know not to stop pursuing the retreating soldiers until they reach the Russian border.

They're running Rolling Thunder ops on everything with a Russian in it. Lead elements made it as far as Lysychansk. The Russians at Izyum fled, abandoning most of their gear. Having to regroup in Donetsk and Luhanks. There's still a lot of Russians trapped behind Ukrainian lines so they will have to commit forces to sealing off these stragglers.

Also, there's an entire Ukrainian armored division that has gone dark. It could be inbound on any number of targets on the Russian front as a second spearhead.

The best thing the stragglers can do is surrender.

I've heard there's a plan to give Kaliningrad to Russians who fought against Putin.

Putin's best bet is to offer to return all the Ukrainians he kidnapped in exchange for dombus.

Until then St. Petersburg will keep burning and they were never catch the people who did it.

From what I see on google maps, it looks like a major [supply?] highway between Kharkiv and Belgorod.

It's a regional capital of sorts and significant military crossroads. Not particularly large, only 400k occupants.

Ukraine is in a strong negotiating position now. If they give that stuff back Vlad might allow them to surrender.

Wasn't there a warning from Russia that US weapons should not be used on Russia soil?

Lemme look...

OK, found something...

Warning from Russia that 'US weapons in Ukraine should not be used against Russian soil' (June 2022)

...Peskov made statements to the journalists on the issues on the agenda.

Evaluating the US arms shipments to Ukraine, Peskov said, "They continue to forcefully fill Ukraine with the most modern weapons. I do not want to talk about the absolutely undesirable and very unpleasant scenarios when they will hypothetically try to use these weapons against targets in our territory. This will significantly change the situation negatively. " said....

@#18 ... Translation: ...

My guess (and it is just that) would be that Pres Putin is looking for an excuse, any excuse, to move to nuclear weapons (tactical or otherwise).

Pres Putin has to know his conventional forces may not be up to the battle he started with his unprovoked invasion of a sovereign Ukraine (understatement). So now he is looking to up the confrontation to one where he thinks he has an advantage.

imo, of course.

His health concerns would fit within the context you provided.

It's now or never. And there's no way in hell Putin will go down as a fnkcin' loser before he kicks the bucket.

Putin to commit more untrained 'soldiers' for the slaughter and will lose this war if he has not already. His abject greed and sense of self worth will be his downfall. Russians need to put him down like last year. If he goes to nukes his ---- is over with NATO not standing by while he does so.

So there is finally light at the end of the tunnel!

Let's hope it's not nuclear powered.
