"My birth certificate reads "Meghan." But my peers at Northwest High School in Nebraska knew me as "Marcus." Changing my name wasn't supposed to be a political statement. But our local school board has turned it into one. As a student at Northwest, I wrote for our newspaper, Viking Saga. In late March, we were told by the board we would no longer be allowed to publish any name that wasn't on our birth certificate or use gender-variant pronouns."

One of the students taking journalism and writing for the paper has been known as Marcus to the students, however his birth certificate has "Meghan" on it.

The School Board has cancelled the paper and shut the journalism class down. The Viking Saga has, after 54 years, will no longer be published.

Killed by right-wing hatred, bigotry, and idiocy.

Students with names such as Pat and Chris expressed concern over whether their names meet Nebraska School Board's edict.

The "boy named Sue" was said to be shocked by the actions of the Nebraska School Board saying "I was active at my school writing music and articles under the name on my birth certificate. Thank god I was born before this nonsense!" Sue's father could not be reached for comment due to death.

They've never hear of authors using a nom de plume?

Also. I found it encouraging the classmates were using the name Marcus. Once the older generations die off life will become better for transgender people.

How old do you think these school board members are? I appreciate your sentiment, and it will help somewhat, but when do you expect Nebraska to turn politically blue?

I feel like today's high school students have, thanks to social media, been exposed to more than their parents could possibly fathom.

Their generation will bring change to this nation.

Hopefully we last that long. The bigger problem is, I don't expect it to survive the next Republican insurrection. Because Republicans won't be so hamfisted about it.

They're using the Supreme Court to dismantle this nation and what it stands for.

That's what I'm watching, Clownshack. We're on a thin line as it is.

Right here in River City (right here in River City)
With a capital "T" and that rhymes with "P" and that stands for pool
(That stands for pool)
We've surely got trouble (we've surely got trouble)
Right here in River City (right here)
Gotta figure out a way to keep the young ones moral after school
(Our children's children gonna have trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble...)

Feckin morons.

This is what the GQP calls freedom.

Rightwing pettiness should never be underestimated. They're willing to go to the mat over ---- most people wouldn't even think about.

If you aren't a straight white male, Republicans will do everything they can to make your life miserable. Exhibit 4,793.

More of that famed small government from the conservative filth that litters this nation.

You all understand that school districts are in a tough place over this issue, right?

"Killed by right-wing hatred, bigotry, and idiocy."

Or it is possible they were trying to avoid being sued, which was a certainty if they had a single teacher who refused to call the kid by their preferred pronoun......

Again, school districts are in a tough spot on this one.

Or they can just be sued for outright discriminating against kids like this. Teachers are professionals who need to do their jobs if you can't do your job - move on. Kids are growing and trying to find themselves and some level of humanity, empathy and compassion is necessary for those that don't fit societal norms.

That said I find the whole pronoun thing more aggravating than anything. The They/them thing in particular. IMHO it is he/she/it, you pick - they/them is plural. He/she - fine pick the gender you choose to be recognized as. Non-binary? "It" fits well and is descriptive. The thing is "it" can have negative connotations nobody wants to be known as "it" - I understand that. Come up with something else because they/them is confusing as ----.

The party that claims to support personal freedom is the party that refuses people the freedom to choose their own pronouns.

"Teachers are professionals who need to do their jobs if you can't do your job - move on"

some are....with a settlement in their hands, apparently.

That teacher got $95K and all the district did was suspend her for 3 days.

This sucks because this school eliminated a fantastic program to avoid any problems.

Your link is about a lawsuit related to the discipline imposed upon a teacher, but nobody has ever accused you of being able to read.

It's no wonder there is a 300,000 teacher shortage in this country today. Who wants to have to deal with this bat crap crazy stuff each and every day??

...who refused to address a student by their preferred pronoun.

The school district took the side of the LGBTQ student, which is exactly what we would want them to do.

And they were sued and settled.

That has lot to do with poverty wages (in Red states in particular). Teaching typically requires a degree and usually an additional certification as a minimum. So 10 years of experience and $35k a year is going to deter a lot of folks from even thinking about it. Even here the wages are going down. If you don't think a teacher should be earning a much better wage I am sorry but our future is in their hands... And the BS that they have to go through with so many districts on an annual basis is joke too.

And yes the BS teachers have to put up with from every angle is incredible. I will defend teachers in general every time. Of course there is always that one or two that are indefensible.
