"A receptionist at Martha's Vineyard Community Services looked up late Wednesday afternoon to find a group of 50 people " men, women and children " standing in the center's parking lot.

The migrants from Venezuela didn't speak English but, with the help of a Spanish translator from the nearby Martha's Vineyard Regional High School, community services staff learned the group was from Venezuela and had been put on a plane with nothing but a brochure from the island's service center.

They had walked the two miles or so from the airport to the center.

"We COVID-tested them all. Everyone was negative. A little girl had a temperature so we separated her with her family. A lot of them were shellshocked and afraid," said Janet Constantino, a therapist and nurse practitioner working at the center.

The crowd wouldn't fit in the building so staffers gave them water and snacks in the parking lot while a plan was made."

"Even for Ron DeSantis, this is a new low." Florida Democratic Chair Manny Diaz said in a statement. "There is nothing that DeSantis won't do, and nobody that he won't hurt, in order to score political points."

Charlie Crist, the Democratic nominee for governor of Florida, said in a statement, "This is just another political stunt that hurts our state. Tonight, the 4.5 million immigrants who call Florida home must be wondering if they're next."

What it is is an example of human trafficking and should be prosecuted as such. That said, the federal government should provide for these immigrants until it is determined whether or not they can stay in the country. Declare a national emergency and build temporary facilities in every state to house them and to have their cases heard. If they have family here or an NGO willing to take them, allow the immigrants to go there, along with any aid that would have been provided to the government run facility.

The feds have got to figure out a way to demaganetize America. We need to incentivize the import of products made in these poor countries and provide disincentives to countries that facilitate illegal pathways into the US.

According to The New York Times reporting not one of these Venezuelans escaping Maduro's "socialist" regime came from Florida. They all were "relocated" from San Antonio, TX to Massachusetts.

Which raises a few questions. One big one being how are Venezuelans that went for and voted for the GOP going to react when their fellow countrymen, women, and children (yes children were part of this) are being treated as political game pieces without respect, without regard?

"The group arrived in Martha's Vineyard on Wednesday afternoon onboard two planes with no prior notice, prompting a scramble by local authorities.

According to the New York Times, local officials and volunteers arranged Covid-19 tests, food and clothing for the group, which included children."

I've read the New Testament, and especially the Gospels, enough to know that this is exactly what a follower of Jesus would do. Can one of the Christian Trumpists on the Retort explain the following verses for me?

Luke 10:29-37
He asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. Look after him,' he said, and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'

"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?"

The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him."

Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."

Florida's filled with people from south of the US border. There are generations of Americans - like Cubans (Rubio) that escaped like these Venezuelans did. They can vote. They aren't undocumented. They made a difference in the last election swinging towards the GOP because of the lies about the Democrats being "communists" and "socialists" like Castro and Maduro.

Now DeSantis has villainized people like them that escaped that very evil. I'm interested in seeing how this plays out, other than the purely inhumane and sociopathic nature of it.

Those are seasonal homes. The year round residents are the coffee and gift shops, restaurants and of course...the folks who tend to the enormous estates.

I'll clue you in....the people who clean the houses and trim the hedges...they don't look like the people who own those homes.

So I'm not shocked there are many "Spanish translators" there to assist with a new crop of workers.

I don't know if Florida is happy with this but I suspect DeSantis is. He's getting the coverage he wanted from this.

Moderate voters in swing states have been sympathetic to Southern States and their issues with illegal immigration and the ongoing battles with the Federal Government and their handling of this issue. Throw in an incident like the "strapping controversy" and how it was handled - punishing agents for doing their jobs and the message to would be migrants was clear as day.

Corky, calm down.

Just admit what has you so upset.

You hoped sending 50 migrants to one of the wealthiest enclaves on the planet for re-location would be a political set-back for DeSantis.

Instead, you learn that over 7,000 migrants have been shipped to/through Florida secretly.

It sort of down plays the sin of sending 50 to Martha's Vineyard, where they are being taken good care of.

And makes you look like a huge -------- for posting it in the first place when in the very article you posted it was reported that over 7,000 migrants had been sent to Florida.

Or at least the claim was made.....and then verified.

Now, don't be too hard on yourself Corky for being unware of the 7,000 while focusing on the 50.

-#85. Here's the thing - illegal immigration enforcement during W was almost indistinguishable from Obama. W was so bad on this issue that the Minuteman Project was launched by private citizens.

Both parties were shamelessly pandering to illegal immigration in hopes of wooing the Hispanic vote. Then Trump came in and cracked down on it. The left was apoplectic and many establishment Republicans were too but the Republicans mostly hit their tongues. The flow of illegal aliens slowed to at least manageable numbers and a crazy thing happened in the 2020 election, Trump's share of the Hispanic vote increased considerably. That electoral shift opened the eyes of at least some Republicans - a majority of Hispanic voters oppose illegal immigration, especially those who are first gen. Further, the pandering is insulting. This has become a winning issue for the GOP especially with the pure NIMBY hypocrisy of elitist Dems being exposed.

All they will call you will be Deportee

Now my father's own father, he waded that river
They took all the money her made in his life
Six-hundred miles to the Mexico border
They chased us like rustlers, like outlaws, like thieves

Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita
Adios mis amigos, Jesus and Maria
You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane
No all they will call you will be Deportee

The sky-plane caught fire, over Los Gatos Canyon
A big ball of fire, it shook all the ground
Who are these friends, who are falling like dry leaves
The radio said they were just deportees

Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita
Adios mis amigos, Jesus and Maria
You won't have a name when you ride the big airplane
No all they will call you will be Deportee

But we died in your hills, we died in your valleys
We died in your orchards, we died on your plains
We died on your deserts, we died in your treetops
Both sides of the river we died just the same

Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye Rosalita

"Whataboutism."

Whataboutism or whataboutery (as in "what about ... ?") denotes in a pejorative sense a procedure in which a critical question or argument is not answered or discussed, but retorted with a critical counter-question which expresses a counter-accusation.

From a logical and argumentative point of view it is considered a variant of the Tu-quoque pattern (Latin 'you too', term for a counter-accusation), which is a subtype of the Ad-hominem argument.[1][2][3][4]

The communication intent here is often to distract from the content of a topic (red herring).

Can't speak for Corky, but this sounds like a case of you assuming everyone is as sociopathic as modern-day Republicans are. For me, the impact on DeSantis is a very ancillary consideration. I care a lot more about desperate families being shuttled around as political pawns. Florida Venezuelan-American community angry with DeSantis

Venezuelan-American leaders in Florida denounced the "flights of asylum seekers" to Martha's Vineyard, blasting DeSantis, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

"Venezuelan leaders are rightfully outraged," said a joint statement of five Venezuelan-American groups on Wednesday night. They plan a news conference on Thursday.

"Venezuelan leaders and other immigration advocates will come together to denounce this blatant disregard for human life and the lies that Governor Ron DeSantis has told to the Cuban and Venezuelan communities as recently as his September 7th press conference in Miami where he promised that neither Cubans or Venezuelans would be sent out of the state."

The population of Venezuelan immigrants in the United States has risen 54 percent since 2015, when it stood at 256,000. By 2018, this population had grown to 394,000, making it the fifth-largest South American immigrant population in the United States.

More than half of Venezuelan immigrants in the United States reside in Florida (53 percent). The next largest destination state, Texas, accounts for another 12 percent. The top four counties by concentration in the 2014"18 period were Miami-Dade, FL; Broward, FL; Orange County, FL; and Harris County, TX. Together, these four counties accounted for almost half (45 percent) of Venezuelan immigrants in the country.

As of 2014-18, the greater Miami, Orlando, and Houston metropolitan areas were home to 53 percent of Venezuelan immigrants. Another 7 percent of Venezuelans resided in the greater New York metropolitan area, and 3 percent lived in greater Tampa.

www.migrationpolicy.org

According to this article there ae 4000 Venezuelan immigrants in the the Boston-Cambridge-Newton MA-NH area, so logically if these immigrants have any relative in the US, they are more likely to be in Florida or Texas.

Local Venezuelan leaders and other immigration advocates gathered in Doral where they denounced what they call DeSanits' blatant disregard for human life and the lies he told to the Cuban and Venezuelan communities. They point to a September 7th press conference in Miami where they said he promised that neither Cubans nor Venezuelans would be sent out of the state.

"We are here today to tell Governor DeSantis that he has to stop. We demand that he stops using our pain, our suffering, and our desperation for his political gain," said Adelys Ferro, with the Venezuelan American Caucus.

"This is just the beginning. If we don't raise our voices and let them know that we are human beings, that immigrants are here to work, to have a life. (They are) looking for democracy, for peace, for liberty, for stability for them and their families," she added.

Miami-based immigration activists gathered at the park Thursday to denounce Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration flying two planes full of asylum-seekers, including 50 Venezuelans, to Martha's Vineyard. The Republican governor's decision comes a week after he promised the Cuban and Venezuelan communities in Miami that he would not send refugees out of the state.

As a Venezuelan American, Vegas, the deputy state director of the bipartisan American Business Immigration Coalition, said she's heartbroken by the governor's actions on the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month.

"The governor likes to pander to communities like mine, traumatized by political persecution and violence," she said. "This is a new low, even for this governor."

Either they are or they aren't

You can certainly inflame people by intentionally appealing to things that enrage them. Fox News makes billions off this. You've gotta be living on another planet to not recognize it.

Rage is a massive industry in America. Facebook algorithms intentionally provoke people into outrage by showing them content from the echo chamber they disagree with. This drives engagement up, not down, and engagement is how they make money.

Selling outrage is real. Denying it is laughable.

Stunt. As in performance.

Thank you for your honesty.

This is nothing more than political gesture.

Something for the xenophobes who believe Democrats and Biden are pro open border to get excited about.

Like you keep saying. Who cares where they live?

Apparently conservatives.

They somehow believed this is actually accomplishing something.

Making some kind of political message.

Instead of realizing these immigrants are getting better service in communities that want to help them.

On top of that, their Governors are wasting millions of taxpayer dollars their states could benefit from by being put to better uses.

"So why the outrage over 50 going to Martha's Vineyard?"

Sending them to Martha's Vineyard was meant to cause outrage. That's why DeSantis sent them to a tiny island rather than to Boston. It would be like sending them to Key West rather than to Miami. My first thought was that there just isn't a lot of space or services on the Cape (or the Keys) the way there would be Boston (or Miami). But MA's Republican governor is considering a temporary housing at a military base:

Baker administration 'exploring' moving migrants from Martha's Vineyard to Joint Base Cape Cod

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker said his administration is "exploring" another move for dozens of migrants who arrived on Martha's Vineyard on Wednesday aboard charter flights linked to Florida's state government.

"The Baker-Polito Administration is exploring setting up temporary shelter and humanitarian services at Joint Base Cape Cod and will share additional information as soon as it becomes available," Baker said in a written statement issued Thursday.

NOT being used in a media circus as political pawns by fascist pigs.

Those two things are not the same.

They aren't the same for another HUGE reason. It is the Executive branch's FEDERAL power to control this. It is NOT the governors. This is the law.

Also I said in #10 that "... One big one being how are Venezuelans that went for and voted for the GOP going to react when their fellow countrymen, women, and children (yes children were part of this) are being treated as political game pieces without respect, without regard?"

I said this is a political fiasco for the GOP because they only won Florida because of the swing towards the GOP of the Venezuelans and Cubanos. Eberly threw that point right in the trash saying this was a huge win for DeSantis and the GOP. Gal offered evidence that what I said would happen did indeed happen. And it's just started.

I bet this takes hold in S. Florida with the Latin community.

" What specific policies did Biden undo by taking what action on what date?"

Ended remain in Mexico.
Immediately increased the cap for asylum claims
Put a "temporary" stay on deportations
Reinstated catch and release

On the campaign trail he essentially said illegal aliens would be welcomed with open arms. During the primary debate when asked if he supported free health care for illegal aliens he raised his hand.

Absurdly ripped border agents for "strapping" illegal aliens. Promised a quick investigation that went on for over 6 months and after no wrongdoing was found punished those agents anyway on trumped up BS. That certainly sent a message to border agents. Kept the media away from detention centers to hide how bad things were using Covid as an excuse. Refuses to even visit the border same as his "border czar" which sends a message to migrants that they don't give a ----.

I could go on.

Are you seriously unaware of all of this? Have you been living in a cave?

Human, sex and drug trafficking are directly proportional to the number of migrants so a huge spike in illegal immigration results in a huge spike in trafficking. And all of this is squarely on the shoulders of the guy YOU voted for.

These two statements contradict each other.

You care about the "larger problem of illegal immigration."

But you don't "have strong opinions on" immigration?

This isn't a gotcha moment.

Tor thinks the entire third world will come to America.

Republicans believe Mexico, central and southern American nations are sending their worst here. "Rapists and criminals. Some good people too, I guess." - Trump

I don't see it. America has largely been an open borders nation its entire existence.

Xenophobia has also always existed.

I don't think the third world can afford to leave their nations and come here. And the ones walking here are doing so regardless of what the consequences are.

The people who would threaten our nations security have zero problems getting here legally. The Saudis who flew the plans on 9/11 were here legally.

I'd wager the opposite.

Without a hidden world of undocumented labor ready to work for Penny's on the dollar. Wages would increase for everyone.

Also. The workforce would pay taxes. Increasing revenue for the towns and cities they work in

2 reasons. One is a lack of resources. 2 is border security is a federal responsibility.

The reason this is happening is, first and foremost, that the federal government it completely abdicating its responsibility to secure the border and has done everything it can get away with the encourage as much of an influx as possible. If state and local facilities are overwhelmed they have to make some tough decisions. In this case they went with both the pragmatic route and, yes, a political route.

#308 | POSTED BY REDIAL AT 2022-09-16 01:05 AM"

That is a dishonest comparison. Those homeless people are here legally; most of them. The people who are being relocated came here through illegal means and achieved their geographical location due to borderline criminal malfeasance by our federal government to secure our borders and maintain our sovereignty. Another flaw in your analogy is that N Carolina has not proclaimed itself a "sanctuary state" for the homeless.

#313 | Posted by BellRinger at 2022-09-16 01:39 AM | Reply

I don't know how many are coming into Florida, since it's an peninsula. There can't be that many boats coming in.

Texas is a different animal when it comes to the illegals. I don't live all that far from the border. In the last week alone, in the small town I live in, there have been two high speed chases through the town. One crashed in the middle of down town, the other outside of town. They were chased 60 miles by the highway patrol. We've had them drop off the semi trailer full at a gas station and had them crash into homes and trees. It's an every week affair.

Our problem down here (besides the idiot governor) is that we are seeing 2 million a year come over the border. There aren't enough facilities to handle them. No where near enough. The major city, built a brand new processing facility. They opened and within two days had to tell border patrol not to send anymore for a while so they could clear the ones just brought in. There's not enough processing places, not enough housing, not enough food, not enough of anything to handle that volume of people. The federal government isn't sending near enough help to handle this mass of people.

Closer to the border, the ranchers there can't keep fences up. One guy hired a hand solely to fix fences. That's his job, 24/7. The rancher says he doesn't lock the outbuildings because he can't keep glass in the windows when he does. He has a gun in every room because he's scared to death that he'll be invaded in the night. He's sent his family away, so that they will be safe. This is just one ranch out of thousands along the border dealing with this invasion. He also estimated he needs to spend about $800,000 just to repair the damage done as they come through night after night.

High speed chases are a regular thing here. On the interstate or on back roads. You can get killed going to work by being hit in the rear end.

It's not a problem to you, unless it's on your doorstep.

The argument hasn't changed in over 30 years at least.

I love what Clown and 1 iron said above. It's an out of the box way of looking at it but it makes more sense than anything else I've seen. You just have to get past the fear of the perceived consequences of open borders.

crime, wages, national security, etc.....which are already dumpster fires of exposure already. I can't argue with that.

I have a lot of clients who NEED immigrant labor. They've been short on labor of that kind for at least a generation and that problem isn't getting any better. More likely it's going to continue to be an even greater challenge.

#323 | Posted by eberly at 2022-09-16 10:12 AM | Reply

I have a lot of clients who NEED immigrant labor.

Not gonna argue with you there, but that "need" only exists because the US Government refuses to crack down on industries like dairy farming that have so successfully relied on migrant labor that the margins are so thin that everyone has to do it.

We should be requiring companies to pay Americans a fair wage for these jobs. If the cost of milk skyrockets then subsidize it or give people who can't afford it some help. The answer isn't to continue allowing industry to pay peanuts to desperate people and screw Americans out of jobs.

I don't disagree. My expectation would be if we were to allow open borders, then it's understood that these workers are not illegal...and employers can't take advantage of them any longer. This would be a benefit of this in that there are no more shadows.

That's exactly right, and there's a reason that's non-obvious to most. Migrant workers have a vast network of underground support in one another. They share information about how to make it in the US. They help one another find jobs, housing, childcare. They teach one another how to gain access to whatever services are available to them. These people are capital O Organized, and if we give them legal status the first thing they're going to do is unionize across every industry in which they've gained a foothold. It could spark a renewal in support for unions across the country. Everybody that has a stake in the current status quo is scared to death of that.

Other places - still on Cape Cod, but with a lot more resources. Why try so hard to make the residents there as bigoted, racist, and hateful as you are? All this born out of hate from DeSantis and his MAGAts, and yet the migrants as they were getting on busses to the base they'll be given medical care, lawyers, food, interpreters, etc. hugged and some even cried over the love the people of Martha's Vineyard gave them. Also it was voluntary for them to go. This is what intelligent and compassionate government looks like versus the hate-filled incompetent government of Florida and Texas where cruelty is the point.

They're not leaving the island, they're being temporarily relocated to the Cape Cod airbase where other volunteers will help navigate longer term solutions for these people.

Others states that have dealt with MILLIONS of these people over the past couple decades should just STFU while they see 50 be too many to handle.

Other states have received billion upon billions of federal tax dollars to build and maintain facilities to assist these people while the cities and localities finding immigrants dropped on their doorsteps have not. While it's obvious that even with the aforementioned, not nearly enough is being done and border states are being stretched beyond their limits. No one should deny that. But the fact that this nation currently does not have more efficient and effective immigration policy is because Congress refuses to do their job and pass a bill and send it to the White House.

This does not dismiss the Administration's reticence to enact better executive actions, but due to the combined effects of covid, corrupt Central American governments, and useless spending on physical barriers that obviously can't stop thousands from crossing, this is where we are. Solving the immigration problems takes a whole government solution - federal, state, and local - across the board. Making that happen is up to us, the voters, who have empowered those so far refusing to take positive effective steps to fix the problems outside of demagoguing the issue for political effect.

Everyone is now talking about the tens of thousands of migrants being shipped in the middle of the night and now it turns out MV, one of the wealthiest enclaves on the planet, can't handle 50 migrants?

They are being shipped at all times, and again, this is HHS policy. It's not something new. Republicans are starting to make a big deal of this under Biden.......but had no issues under Trump?

What's your definition of handle 50 migrants? Give them food and comfort? I think they came thru with flying colors in that regard and MV was made to look good, no doubt. These people needs homes and jobs....they will be moved somewhere that can hopefully be accommodated.

The facts are that most of the people who live on the Border in Texas were against the Wall... regardless of what myths some cow botherers might tell you.

"Americans who live near border say Trump's wall is unwelcome

" Nov 22, 2016 2:06 PM EDT

LOS EBANOS, Texas " All along the winding Rio Grande, the people who live in this bustling, fertile region where the U.S. border meets the Gulf of Mexico never quite understood how Donald Trump's great wall could ever be much more than campaign rhetoric.

Erecting a concrete barrier across the entire 1,954-mile frontier with Mexico, they know, collides head-on with multiple realities: the geology of the river valley, fierce local resistance and the immense cost."

2. This thread isn't about the wall. It's about the impacts of thousand of illegal wretches a day overunning the border counties, and the hilarity that ensues when a few of them are sent elsewhere.

This didn't get DeSantis a single Florida voter more than he had. His "own the libs" is all about broadening his appeal outside Florida. In Florida this stunt will (IMHO) cost him votes from the Latin communities. It won't get him a single additional FL white vote.

The only question I have is did this send a message to Abbott and the Abbott voters of Texas about DeSantis - because he pulled these folks from San Antonio. Looks like a shot across the bow to me.

Yep. I remember Chile all too well. I got to experience the protests in Santiago 3 years ago. Pinochet's reign hangs over everything to this day and the people will not have anything that reminds them of that stench.

This entire thing with DeSantis reminded me of the time Lukashenko (Belarus) lied to immigrants from Syria and got them all to come to Belarus where he promptly shipped them to the border of Poland and Lithuania. Why? Because he lost the election, and wouldn't step down. Instead he imprisoned, tortured, even killed the opposition. So he used migrants escaping from hell against Poland and lithuania (and the EU) because they sanctioned him over his refusal to accept he lost the election. His goal was to destabilize his enemies by using the immigrants.

Looks like DeSantis is taking lessons from that authoritarian piece of ----, Llukashenko.

Sycophant,

Here you go:

What specific policies did Biden undo by taking what action on what date?"

What about all the Trump flag flying rural farmers here in Indiana with yards plastered with "NO WIND FARMS" signs?

Some issues transcend ideology, they're simple personal preferences. Martha's Vineyard does not have enough housing for those who live and work on the island, so they're in no way equipped to provide long-term care for immigrants dropped on their stoop by an out-of-state politician performing a stunt. They responded positively and provided temporary help and shelter on a second's notice. That alone is impressive compared to the whiners trafficking people to own liberal sanctuary locales and their inhabitants, wrongly claiming that they'd instantly shun such intruders.

The fact that you fail to discern these differences is mindboggling.

Talk about ignorance, Biden was doing the same thing, he couldn't have 15,000 people at the bordertowns, so he flew 76 flights in 6 months to Jacksonville FL.

This whole situation is summed up nicely below:

The policies creating the current crisis are inhumane and harmful. But the people who support them simply didn't care about the consequences until they were affected and it had political implications. And stunt or not, it's impossible not to notice.

Not all of the records News4Jax received made sense. One flight came from Ireland, for example, and another involves the National Guard. News4Jax has asked the state to clarify.

The state provided the information you cited, and the state won't respond to News4Jax to clarify why the flights given by the state don't make sense.

Some remained voluntarily after having everything explained HONESTLY THIS TIME to them. The people of Martha's Vineyard gladly took them in.

-This bogus talking point has been dealt with.

It's not going away regardless of how you perceive it.

Why does the "same thing" get a pass because it's per the Biden Administration's HHS policy?

I agree completely this was a political stunt but since the USA isn't readily prepared and property set up to handle this how can you conclude any of these destinations are readily prepared and properly set up to handle this?

It's a plan and they're following it but that doesn't mean it's any better for those folks that the 50 who spent a couple days at MV, who clearly got ready and apparently did a great job.

Everybody is pretending this matters to the migrants being shipped to here and there because they WANT it to matter to these migrants.

You're also praying this hurts DeSantis.......but you can see it doesn't.

Hence, all the "you're such a hater" accusations being thrown around.

The argument is over when that's all people have.

And as it was pointed out above.....there is more to come. I'll bet all kinds of enclaves such as MV are wondering if they're next.

Oh my god, MV wasn't ready.

Oh my god, they were told not going to Boston, but MV

Oh my god, they had to walk 2 miles.

You really think these migrants give a flying ---- about any of that?

I know everyone wants to victimize the living ---- out of these 50 migrants but it's not going to work.

And this is coming from someone who is not nor will be a DeSantis supporter. I see it objectively as a successful republican primary stunt.
